Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Bark louder, little dog.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

People are weird.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

How stupid are these people?

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Such unalloyed good news. There will be a backlash, most likely, and the wars will go on, as will Al-Quaeda, but if a man ever needed to die, Osama bin Laden did.

    Rest in hell, you mofo.

Never thought we would hear this. I was sure that if we did get it that they would just kill him and dump in at sea with no word in the media (I just hear he might be buried at sea – no place to go).

Now we just have to wait for blow back.

I hate saying anyone deserves to die even if they are the most vile right-winger but Osama bin Laden was one douchebag that I shed no tears over. While I wish he had been captured and killed right away it does warm my heart that it happened under Obama’s watch. Obama did in two years what Bush couldn’t or didn’t want to do in 7 years.

Seriously, though, what are the deranged right-wingers going to say? The only thing they can try and do is claim credit for Bush which will be very difficult.

How rich that Obama has probably known for days that bin Laden has been dead and has probably been silently smirking to himself all week long while others have been distracted by the nonsense birther issue. And to top it all off, Celebrity Apprentice was interrupted. Trump got owned by Obama two consecutive days in the most humiliating way possible.

    Well done Obama.

An actual Mission Accomplished, on the eighth anniversary of the Chimp’s swaggering flight-suit Nothing Accomplished.

This is how grown-ups govern — not frat-boy dress-up photo-ops by showboating assholes exploiting aircraft carriers for idiotic political stunts; but quiet, diligent and effective work behind the scenes for years by government employees who value good work over careerism, profit and personal glory.

The Republicans will claim their tax cuts killed Bin Laden.

Trump will accuse Obama of hiding the death certificate.

Michelle Bachmann will argue that Obama has killed a fellow Muslim just to ensure that death panels will destroy America.

I am not being flippant. The Republican response will clearly be flippant because they will be terrified that this will hurt their election efforts… because they can’t paint Obama as weak on terror.

Here’s the good news about killing Bin Laden:

The psychological effect of losing a political leader, even if Bin Laden’s effectiveness in recruiting had dimmed over the decade, is huge. With him out there, openly mocking U.S. efforts to find him and capture/kill him, Bin Laden was a symbol of defying American “imperial” interests. But now that he’s dead, one less way for Al Qaeda recruiters to claim “Hey, we know what we’re doing” and “Hey, we are winning this war against the West.”

The bad news is, of course, that Al Qaeda or their cohorts in terror are going to want to strike back, somewhere and with enough blood and loss for the world to notice, just to demonstrate that they are still in this.

This, combined with the fact that nations like Tunisia and Egypt were transforming their own politics from popular and relatively non-violent uprisings, has got to hurt Al Qaeda and Middle East terrorism.

It dawns on me that this may be a bookend date. The first bookend being the ruins of the helicopter attack to free the hostages in Iran. That day became a symbol of ineptness, a sign that America needed a change. It was the touchstone that led to the Reagan Revolution. For better or worse (ok, worse), the ascendant GOP brought a change of direction to the country.

Today, the change we were promised can begin. The American people made a change in 2008, but the unfinished business of the Bush years was enormous. Today, we are now able to pivot from the War on Terror and the collapse of the world economy to a different direction for the country. The winds of GOP rage were already tapering, their source will dissipate considerably now. (Cynics, just STFU for a minute, this really is a game-changer.)

While I don’t expect a rapid departure from Iraq and Afghanistan, the impetus for these invasions is gone. The blood and treasure can now be spent on more productive and positive domestic measures. The rebuilding of our nation can begin. The competence of our President and the ascendant Democrats will become a source of pride for most Americans. This is an important day.

Obama really does owe Bush a debt of gratitude; had Bush not sat with his thumb up his ass after the CIA warned him that “Bin Laden determined to strike in US,” then we never would have been aware of the threat posed by OBL.

Om the other hand, bin Laden hasn’t been much more than a figurehead for years. In that time Al Qaeda has become a franchise. The terrorists will celebrate him as a martyr. We have, at least, moved up to killing the #1 in AQ. Our grandchildren will still be killing AQ’s #1 long after we’re all pushing up daisies.

Shortly before the US presidential election in 2004, in a taped statement, bin Laden publicly acknowledged al-Qaeda’s involvement in the attacks on the US, and admitted his direct link to the attacks. He said that the attacks were carried out because “we are a free people who do not accept injustice, and we want to regain the freedom of our nation.”
In an audio message that surfaced on the Internet in May 2006 the speaker, who is alleged to be Osama bin Laden, defends Zacarias Moussaoui, who was undergoing a trial for his participation in the September 11 attacks. The voice in the audio message says “I begin by talking about the honorable brother Zacarias Moussaoui. The truth is that he has no connection whatsoever with the events of September 11th, and I am certain of what I say, because I was responsible for entrusting the 19 brothers — Allah have mercy upon them — with those raids, and I did not assign brother Zacarias to be with them on that mission.”[71]

Obama really does owe Bush a debt of gratitude; had Bush not sat with his thumb up his ass after the CIA warned him that “Bin Laden determined to strike in US,” then we never would have been aware of the threat posed by OBL.

Er, that’s not even close to correct. The Clinton administration knew of the threat, and launched attacks to try to take him out, which Republicans declared were “wag the dog” attempts to distract from Whitewater. Al-qaeda was the major reason why they told the Bush transition team that terrorism should be their major national security focus, which they deliberately ignored.

We owe Bush nothing but curses and a blackened name.

That’s right, no civilians were killed by American armed forces in Afghanistan until 2008 when Barack Obama marched in there and opened fire. Thanks for clearing that up for us.

So is there anything at all that you don’t think is Obama’s fault? Global warming? Collapsing black holes? Starbucks gave you a cold cup of coffee? Anything?

Anyone know how to do the rhetorical version of the heimlich maneuver? Because I’m about to choke to death on the self-righteousness of all these “I think about politics a couple times a month” mofos on my facebook feed who just remembered how deep and true their patriotism is. They know what this situation calls for, and oddly enough it’s the same thing every situation calls for: pictures of them smoking and drinking things. Only this time everything’s tagged “Victory.” Victory shots! Victory cigars! Victory bonghits! Wait, what did we win, again?

It’s great that Al-Qaeda’s press secretary is dead and all, but people need to get the fuck over themselves. Like the big crowd that gathered outside the WH… oh, neat! Then CSPAN gets in close to interview some of them, and it’s all “I’m so and so, we came out from Georgetown because we’re SO STOKED! WOOOO!” and I remember that, oh right, this is like a football game to them, and they’re just looking to associate with a ‘winner.’ We don’t know how to deal with a situation like this, but we know how to get drunk and post pictures of ourselves being assholes to facebook. When all you have is a hammered…

I think the thing that gets me is that many of the people who are making a big deal about celebrating today weren’t thinking about the war yesterday and will probably go back to forgetting about it in a week or two when some other big item takes over the news. Our people are over there fighting and dying every day, but most of the country can comfortably ignore it except for the biggest events. There’s something deeply disturbing about that. A war should be a big deal, not something you can ignore as irrelevant to your life.

This is not a hope that we treat this dead mass murderer as an honored and respected foe, because he was no such thing — but a (slender) hope that we can refrain from deliberate barbarity, because we should be better than that, and because defiling OBL’s corpse after death is much the same as publicly burning a Quran — nearly guaranteed to fan the flames of jihad.

These are the same people that give me the “pffft, this crap again” treatment over anything political in the day-to-day. So yeah, people should be happy, people should celebrate. It’s the part where throwing on an Osama’s Dead House Mix, cranking the bass, and posting pics of Victory Shots for everyone to see makes you a better patriot and a true adult. More importantly, doing this shit also seems to act as a stand-in for one’s contribution to the cause, their portion of shared sacrifice and so on. That’s what I mean by canned self-righteousness.

@Spaghetti Lee: I’d want them to be consistent. I’m a longtime Green Bay Packer fan. Suddenly there are a lot of new Packer truck decals, hats, shirts, etc. being rocked in my (small coastal California) town after GB won the latest Super Bowl. As soon as some other team gets hot, the GB gear will get stashed in the closet. They aren’t Packer fans, they’re just responding to a cue. Everyone loves a winner! etc.

Same issue politically. We’re talking people that don’t have any sort of coherent worldview. Completely reactionary, and most of the time can’t be assed to follow current events. I know these people day-to-day and I can assure you that a terrorist attack is not high on their list of concerns. Then we catch bin Laden, and suddenly they’re supreme uberpatriots. In a life that’s otherwise unaffected by the fighting that our troops are doing and the pain and loss that people experienced on 9/11, they pull patriotism and involvement and “9/11 changed everything” and etc. outt’ve the closet for special occasions. Given the right cue they’re extremely patriotic… for a week or two.

I have a problem with the idea that posting pics of yourself doing “Victory Shots” to Facebook constitutes supporting the troops or sharing sacrifice. If there’s a way to frame what they were going to do anyway (taking pics of themselves getting fucked up) as patriotic involvement, they’re all for it. But that’s where it ends. Given the phone number to the Whitehouse and the Congressional switchboard, for instance, none of the particular group of people I’m referring to was willing to call and demand better pay for troops.

Someone with a brain larger than a pea might suggest, dear, that there is enough credit to go around to everyone involved in a mission like this, particularly to the military who planned and undertook the action and to their commander-in-chief who (with their assistance) finalized and approved the strategy.

Then again, someone with a brain larger than a pea isn’t likely to be a narrow minded, reflexively bigoted cretin.
