And in other news…
A little over a year ago our old coonhound passed away. Just a few months before that we had lost another longtime coonhound and pack member. For some months we were left only with the goldfish. Then last fall we adopted Logan, a rescued cat. Around Christmas time I was (like a fool) trying to take the poor thing out for a walk. Walking a cat turned out to be like trying to make sense of Libertarian gibberish. There is no point to it. Now Logan goes in and out on his own and so far, so good. He seems happy and so am I. He even seems at peace with the latest occupant of the house, Cooper. They hang out together, and often wait together at the back door for me to let them in:
Cooper is a rescued pup. He seems to be a mix of several breeds. We’ve heard dachshund, rat terrier, jack russell and a few others. He does have a decent hound dog howl and that always makes me smile and remember old Ben. He is a small dog–smaller than the cat–and that is interesting after years of living with two big and lazy old hound dogs. He is also pretty damn active. We have been training him and he seems to be teachable–which is also nice.
After a year or so without a dog in the house, it is great to have another one in the pack.
So here is Cooper:
In the BJ tradition, I may file updates on his progress.
And now that the introduction is done, feel free to use this for an Open Thread.

What an adorable pup. Thanks for giving him a home.

What a cutie pie! And so is Cooper.
I so hear ya; the house seems so empty without pets. (Four rescue cats.)

I just love dogs with Sister Bertrille ears. What a great face, and I’m so glad such a sweetie has a loving home.

Oh how I wish I could see pictures from the ‘Berry. Tomorrow . . . .

Hey! Whas up Cooper? and youze too Logan.
PurpleGirl
Awwww. He’s cute. May you and your family have many good years with him (and Logan).

@Cat Lady:
Woah! Flashback. Yeah, I see it too.
He’s adorable. The little ones seem to like a lot of attention and activity. Our 7 year old 9 lb mixed breed still thinks he’s a puppy. We have to spell words like squirrel and bunny around him or all proceedings must halt while he does a quick sweep of the yard.

What a perfect picture of your pals—and how totally representative of the different mindsets of both species.
Dog: “Ah man, c’mon, let me in, let me in, pleeeeeease let me in.”
Cat: “Ya better open this fucking door.”

That pup has cute all over it, especially the bottom shot. The kitteh looks annoyed, like Why is this idiot taking my picture? Let me in!! while puppeh patiently waits for his master to let him in.

Congrats on both. Perhaps the future will bring cute pics of the two curled up together…

I like how he’s eying you with a certain amount of suspicion in the bottom pic.

My youngest cat, Sophia, has a calcium oxalate stone in her bladder, and she’s having surgery tomorrow to have it removed. It’s a low-pH stone which can’t be dissolved with diet or supplements. It will only get larger and continue to irritate her bladder and cause repeated infections.
I may be silly, but I talk to my cats as if they understand me. I try to tell them when they go to the vet why it’s good for them and not to be afraid. I can’t bring myself to say anything to Sophia, seeing as how her abdomen is going to be flayed open like a fish and she’ll be in pain for a few days under the best of circumstances.
She has to be kept quiet for a week. Seeing as how there’s always chasing and pouncing around here, I’ll have to isolate her when I’m not home, and that’s not going to make anyone happy.
I have a very good vet clinic, and everyone in town thinks their surgeons are stellar. I still wish I didn’t need to know.

@BGK:
Good luck. I hope it all goes well and with a minimum of pain for all of you. Say something to Sophia anyway. I’m sure it helps.
Cooper and Logan are adorable and look so clever at the door.

New friends! Hello, new cat and dog friends!

He will be found. He will be patted on the head. He will be squeezed. You cannot prevent this. You can only wait in horror for it to happen.
We are many. We are everywhere.
We are coming to hug your dog.

Good boy, Cooper!

He is insanely cute. Congratulations.

@BGK: Sophia will be okay. Kitties are tough. When my cat had her cancer surgeries, she had a huge, long suture that ran from just above the middle of her side all the way to her underbelly. She still cornered the primarily outdoor cat, who was male, 10 years younger, half-again as large as her, in the kitchen 2 days later.
Keeping her still can be difficult, because they just don’t feel that bad. But if it’s only for a week, you’ll both get through it. Just count down the days. Her favorite way of sitting still may be in your or next to your lap. Any time you can do that, just do, and you’ll both recover from the trauma (and it is traumatizing to see them post-op).
And it’s okay to tell Sophia that it’s going to suck. She’s going to find out anyway, right? :-)

Coop is cool. Thanks, Dennis.

Cooper is super!
LOVE when the doggies tilt their heads like that…”what the hell…” :D
Logan also appears to rock, so good on ya.

Now THAT is a seriously cute dog!

I don’t think I have seen anyone link to it yet, but the Shiba Inu puppy cam is back up with a new litter who were born about a month ago. I accept the mutterred curses that will be forthcoming when you realize how much time you’ve wasted watching them.

@BGK:
When our cat Natasha had her cancer surgery 6 years ago, they sent her home with a slow-release pain patch that kept her feeling pretty good until it wore off three days later. Then she suddenly felt a little creaky, but we could tell it wasn’t nearly as bad as it would have been without the patch.
IOW, see if they’re planning to put a pain patch on your girl when they’re done, because it will do both of you a lot of good.

@freelancer: I thank you for observing the niceties here. And Coop is definitely high on teh adorable scale.

Cooper looks like a purebred American trash hound–canis detritus. Much like Cole’s Lily. They are very smart and they make great pets. I’ve loved every one I’ve ever been affiliated with. And Logan looks like a great cat. I wish you joy of both of them.

@BGK:
Good luck with Sophia. You both will be in my thoughts.

Aaaawwww, Cooper is a cutie! (and Logan, too also, of course). Part doxie, almost certainly — that’s a very Doxie head & expression, in the second picture, that almost-squint — and terrier, or even beagle? (Doxies howl, but not with the devotion beagles give to their vocal instruments.) Maybe even part chihuahua… pet shop chihuahuas frequently run twice the ‘AKC regulation’ size, 8-12lbs. And those wonderful flyaway ears would be a compromise between the drooping doxie/beagle groundsweepers & the upright chihuahua carriage…

@BGK: Our late 12lb. papillon Flicker, aka Buta-Hime-Sama, had 3 surgeries for bladder stones. At least in her case, the ‘zipper’ on her belly was smaller than we expected, and she recovered hella faster than a human under similar circumstances. Bladder stones are extremely irritating & unpleasant, and just not being in pain from the stone continually rattling around will make the I’ve-just-had-my-belly-cut-open pain a lot more bearable by comparison. Or so I am told; if you look up ‘cutting for stone’ in humans, it was one of the earliest successful standardized surgeries for humans, even before antiseptics & anesthesia, in the late 1700s…

Congratulations, Dennis–Cooper is adorable. AND, if I’m reading that expression in the bottom photo rightly, SMART so you will never be bored.

That bottom picture definitely deserves a “squeee!”
Adorably cute.

A judicious mix of feline & canine family members is always advisable. Your dog will build your confidence and join you in active pursuits. The cat is for more meditative times and to keep you humble,
