I wanted to repeat this lovely bit of snark from the Slate.com Cats of War article. The comment is a reply from user finkyboy in regards to the complaint (serious apparently) regarding the use of photoshopped images in the slide show:
I know, right? First the birth certificate, now this. You know why they’re not releasing the bin Laden pics? Their Adobe licence expired and Congress won’t raise the debt ceiling so it can be renewed. Commies!
literally started me crying tears, and considering the sorry state of affairs when it comes to the R’s who have hijacked our politics, a laugh was sorely needed. Hence why I also spend so much time here, thank you everyone (and thus concludes our Tiny Tim moment).
There’s a good young adult dystopian fiction series called “Chaos Walking”, first book is The Knife of Never Letting Go. Dogs are able to talk in this book, set on a colonized planet.
First sentence is: “The first thing you find out when yer dog learns to talk is that dogs don’t got nothing much to say. About anything.” The dog’s first sentence in the book is: “Need a poo, Todd.”

A chuckleriffic day for Dreher. Stokoe is a shit-stirrer, and seems to get genuine pleasure over screwing with folks.
According to the emails, OCATruth.com was designed by Jason Folsom and is written by Jesse Cone and Rod Dreher. All three are current and former parishioners of St. Seraphim’s Cathedral in Dallas. It was established with the support and cooperation of Fr. Joseph Fester, the former Dean of St. Seraphim’s (and current Dean of Metropolitan +Jonah’s St. Nicholas Cathedral in Washington DC), who provides information and direction; and done so with the knowledge and blessing – and all evidence would suggest – cooperation of Metropolitan Jonah.
Hehe, I sooo much want John or someone else to let me write a front page piece or two about this. Conservative religious hypocrisy! Converts who want to remake Orthodoxy as a branch of the culture wars! Sexual misconduct hypocrisy!
There’s definitely plenty of blame to go around in the OCA-Herman and Theodosius were pretty corrupt, and lets not get started on Nikolai. Being formerly Orthodox, and living on the West Coast, I’ve had plenty of run ins with all sorts of nasty converts.
Some of the allegations raised against Benjamin, on Voices from Russia…Few things piss me off as much as conservative religious figures who practice one thing in private, but preach about traditional values and whatnot (Benjamin rumoured to be not so celibate and very gay in his private life). I fucking believed all that once too, and it led me so deep in the closet and denial that I’m only now recovering. Only I took it seriously, and decided that I couldn’t stand such a traditionalist, conservative Church.
Ack, I wrote a massive comment in reply, its in moderation.
Talked about hypocritical closeted bishops, some of the juciest details from Voices From Russia, and my wish for John to let me write a front page story about Orthodox, converts, and Rod Dreher.
Rick Scott, FL Governor, is proposing that welfare recipients pay for drug tests out of their own welfare checks. Remember Rick Scott? The guy whose healthcare corporation was convicted of the largest Medicare fraud in history and paid a settlement of $660M?
This is the same class warfare bullshit the Republicans are dumping on people getting unemployment benefits. GOP Thinking: “There’s nothing wrong with our economy or job market, it’s just that ‘these people’ are lazy and probably drug abusers, so let’s test them for drug usage to justify our cutting social services down to nothing.”
Dear GOP SOBs: why the automatic assumption that families on welfare or government aid are drug abusers? Why not recognize the possibility that our free-market Randian Overlord Deregulated economy isn’t working at all for people earning under 100k a year? Oh, right. Because that would mean admitting YOU WERE WRONG about how capitalism really ought to work, and Republicans can NEVER be wrong, can they…?

It got even funnier – such a tangled web of deceit and misery surrounding so many players. Bishop Mark of Baltimore is a Calvinist moron convert who Metro Phil elegantly shoved out of the Antiochian jurisdiction. He was immediately heralded as the savior of Dallas, home to Dreher and those of his ilk – he made a perfect fit within Jonah’s system. And of course, predictably (as Bishop Mark did in the midwest with the Antiochian parishes), everything turned into fractious shit under his fabulous Christian Conservative activist leadership.
• On Bright Monday, April 25th +Jonah, without the prior agreement of the Synod, suddenly announced his resumption of duties as the “locum tenens” of the Diocese of the South. On Friday, April 29th, the full meaning of this news was made clearer, when OCANews published emails indicating a campaign to replace Bishop Mark of Baltimore, the current administrator of the Diocese, was underway. Revelation of the moves, however, did not stop the Dallas cathedral Parish Council, one of whose members writes for OCATruth.com, from presenting Bishop Mark with a letter on Friday “demanding” to know his answers to certain questions, with a Monday, May 2nd, deadline for his response. +Mark, according to witnesses in Chicago, acknowledged receipt of the Parish Council’s letter, but refused to answer its questions, pointing out that he was in Chicago for the consecration of Bishop Matthias, followed immediately by the Synod meeting.
…
This did not halt the continuing campaign though. Today, on a private blog associated with OCATruth, aware that Bishop Mark and the new parish priest, Fr. David Moretti, were both temporarily staying at Metropolitan Jonah’s two-bedroom condo in Dallas wrote: “….when +Mark returns to his apartment, he may find the locks changed and his belongings on a heap outside.” OCANews. can now confirm that the Synod has returned responsibility for the Diocese to the former “locum tenens”, Bishop Nikon.
…
• The Metropolitan Council will begin its meetings, together with the Lesser Synod, tomorrow through Friday, also in Chicago.
The things is, I know many of the cradle bishops in the OCA have had their share of problems-Herman, Theodosius, Nikolai-but its convert culture that is obnoxious as all heck. There’s definitely a strong strain within American Orthodoxy that wants to…identify Orthodoxy very strongly with contemporary conservatism.
I was one of those angry young 20-something converts, and I felt like I ruined a large chunk of my youth over it. Feeling massive guilt over being trans, then finding out years later that sooo many bishops themselves are leading closeted private lives, whilst kissing up to their convert base and acting all social conservative-ish IRL. Benjamin actually signed a petition in 2008 supporting Prop 8 with the rest of CA’s Orthodox bishops!
Oh yeah, definitely plenty of ice. I’ve also switched to ibuprofen, as vicodin…well, getting trippy is not really what I want to be doing after recovering from surgery.
There’s definitely plenty of blame to go around in the OCA-Herman and Theodosius were pretty corrupt, and lets not get started on Nikolai. Being formerly Orthodox, and living on the West Coast, I’ve had plenty of run ins with all sorts of nasty converts.
Yeah, you’d have a larger convert cohort out there than here in flyover country – we’ve got enough cradle ethnic laity back in this urban chunk of the upper south to want to keep shit real and relevant – we’ve got what’s going on a 4th generation parish, and no gladhanding would-be social warrior convert is going to take that away from this laity.
Interestingly, our parish laity tends to mirror the urban population as a whole in attitudes on lifestyles, and tend to not give a damn about it. It is awesome, and I’m pretty pleased.

Conservatives continue to protect the worthy and underdogs from the powerful and callous elites — in particular, this work in Florida.
Florida is set to become the first state to pass a law that would limit doctors’ ability to council parents about gun safety in the home. Pediatricians decry the law as wrongheaded, and they’re backed by statistics that suggest the law will kill kids.
__
Last week, the state legislature approved a bill that would make it legal to impose punishment on doctors who ask about guns kept in the home. The bill awaits approval from Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who is known to support gun rights and will likely sign the bill, said Dr. Louis St. Petery, a pediatrician in Tallahassee, Fla., and executive vice president of the Florida Pediatric Society.
__
A gun in the home is 43 times more likely to kill someone known to the family than it is to kill someone in self-defense, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). And many victims of accidental gun injuries and death are under age 25, research has shown. Further, states with the most guns at home have suicide rates double rates of states with the fewest guns, and those suicides are often children.
__
Pediatricians argue it’s vital to ask about guns in the home so they can advise parents about risks and make sure the guns are stored properly, all in order to prevent injury and death in children.
If your children can’t stand the bullets, have ’em stay out of the house. They got to grow up sometime, and we can’t have no damn doctors getting parents all het up about some hypothetical though likely kid-shooting instead of focusing on the important things: Expanding the idea of 2nd Amendment Rights to any degree imaginable.

Michael Mukasey:
Consider how the intelligence that led to bin Laden came to hand. It began with a disclosure from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM), who broke like a dam under the pressure of harsh interrogation techniques that included waterboarding. He loosed a torrent of information—including eventually the nickname of a trusted courier of bin Laden.
That regimen of harsh interrogation was used on KSM after another detainee, Abu Zubaydeh, was subjected to the same techniques. When he broke, he said that he and other members of al Qaeda were obligated to resist only until they could no longer do so, at which point it became permissible for them to yield. “Do this for all the brothers,” he advised his interrogators.

Now that the Royal Wedding is over, Brits kick the Liberal Democrats to the Curb:
The UK looks set to overhwhelmingly reject a change to the voting system – a major blow to Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg after heavy election losses.
__
Elections expert Professor John Curtice is predicting the No campaign will get about 70% of the vote.
__
The Lib Dems, who backed a change to the alternative vote, lost nearly half their councillors in English local elections.
__
The SNP won a majority in the Scottish Parliament, the first party to do so.
So, despite forming a coalition with the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats have been unable to get any significant compromise, resulting in a royal butt kicking.
Not only that, voters have rejected an alternative voting system which might have allowed Lib Dems to retain some power in future elections (the AV system would have replaced the current “winner take all” system). The Labour Party, which looked as though it had been consigned to the dustbin of history, may be making a comeback.
You gotta wonder what would have happened had the Lib Dems forged an alliance with their more natural allies, Labour, instead of trying to climb to power on their own.

I’ll admit to liking *that* crowd less, simply because of their zeal for conservative politics.
That’s how a lot of us cradle Catholics feel about the Roman Catholic Church now — we had a nice reform movement going with Vatican II and then all of the converts swarmed in and wrecked the place. Now it’s the All Abortion, All the Time (Except When We Take A Break for Some Gay-Hating) Church.
Vicodin doesn’t agree with me. At all. Did you know that one of the common side effects is uncontrollable vomiting? I found this out at 5 am two days after my knee surgery. :-(
I can’t believe Fester forwarded the SMPAC report to Nikolai. Fester just comes across (and his minions) as pieces of s*it.
There’s some fairly convincing indication that Fester was not the culprit down in the (admittedly hard to follow) comments.
Were I to name the culprit, I’d guess it was Bp Mark of Douchebagistan (him currently operating from Dallas, as it were) who released the report. He’s the only personality so caustic that both sides hate him (even Dreher doesn’t like him), and it fits his power grubbing MO. He may have perceived himself as coming up with the top slot – something which I understand he was aiming for when he was with the Antiochian jurisdiction.

Omnes Omnibus
@hilts: Another one to add to the list of soulless monsters.

@Amanda – check this list of clergy supporters of Jonah. Mostly non-slavic converts, the vast majority south and west.

Middle Pennsylvania and its teeming throngs of OCA ethnics? Nonexistent.

@Amanda in the South Bay: @Yevgraf (fka Michael):
I’m sure this is going to be a fantastic story once you put it together, but right now it sounds like a WoW thread.

@Origuy:
Oh, its juicy all right. Theres more than enough here to satiate the desires of all BJ-dom.
Yutsano
@Omnes Omnibus: Mukasey was already there for me after he took over for Gonzo and then made the DoJ even more of a right-wing personal counsel for the President. Not to mention shielding Yoo and Bybee from any legal consequences.
@jeffreyw: That springer puppeh? The one your wife has at St Francis? Doesn’t hir face just say, “Take me home to play all day with teh Brittanys Daddy jeffreyw?”
jeffreyw
@Yutsano: Mrs J was certainly smitten, but the dog has been spoken for. The new owner to be comes every day to walk her while they wait for the medical hold to end.

@Amanda in the South Bay:
Dreher appears to have gone into the witless protection program. He’s nonexistent at the moment, save for his sockpuppets at OCATruth.
Yutsano
@jeffreyw: Awww. Well at least the tale is ending happily for now. But I got a feeling Mrs J put her name at the top of the list for if things don’t work out. :)

@Yevgraf (fka Michael):
Dreher popped up yesterday on this blog:

Wow, its as if the commenters want to make Orthodoxy into a branch of the Republican Party.

Flooding on the Mississippi continues; evacuations continue in the Memphis area; the stretch of river to the north, between Memphis and Cairo, has already passed the high-water level of the 1937 floods, and to the south, flodding has reached as far south as Donaldsonville, the gage south of Baton Rouge; at Greeneville, Mississippi, the river is now within a foot of its historic high-water mark. (The link is to the River Gages tool at the Army Corps of Engineers site–it’s a great little tool for checking water levels, if a little depressing right now.)
The New Madrid/Birds Point floodway was opened Monday; word is that the floodways at Morganza and Bonnet Carré in Louisiana will also soon be in use.
Since the White River and Black River in Arkansas are also flooding (they’ve closed I-40 in Arkansas because of the White River floods) Hillary Clinton is probably to blame for it all.

Drat, I messed up my second link there: River Gages, showing water levels for the stretch of the Mississippi from Arkansas City to Natchez.

Now that the Royal Wedding is over, Brits kick the Liberal Democrats to the Curb:

This is a funny and very sweet video. Thanks for sharing this John….
Its clearing up so headed out of doors to do some gardening. Spacing this with my ongoing job search —

@Amanda in the South Bay:
I was just searching through here:

I pretty much hate everybody involved. It fits that a slackjawed halfwit like Moretti would manage to get lucky and click into somebody’s accidentally left open gmail box, pass it on to a jerk like Bp Mark (whom I despise with the hate of a thousand suns for reasons I can’t disclose), who would then pass it on to a shit stirrer like Stokoe. This swirling toilet has the potential to swirl all of them away, along with Dreher, most of them being converts.

@Yevgraf (fka Michael):
I can’t believe Fester forwarded the SMPAC report to Nikolai. Fester just comes across (and his minions) as pieces of s*it.
I’ll admit to liking *that* crowd less, simply because of their zeal for conservative politics.

Boehner, debt ceiling, and uncertainty. A marvel to read.

@Amanda in the South Bay:
Yevgraf (fka Michael)
@Amanda in the South Bay:

@Yutsano: I expect the first Brittany to come through will send her over the edge.

@Trinity: Late AND tangential:
OMFG! Many many moons ago members of ¡Tchkung! stayed at my house in the Tri-Cities because they couldn’t get the van to start after a show. Talk about six degrees of separation from a story…
