Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Bark louder, little dog.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Maybe when Arizona gets done with their bake sale to build a fence to keep out the brown menace, they can chip in to help build a wall around Ohio.

Think Boehner’s party wouldn’t love to wall-off high-density, lower-income parts of the country, trapping those inside? It’s already the metaphorical aim of their social policies …

@Zifnab: not only is Cactus Barbie panhandling for a fence, once she grifts the cash, she’s gonna use prison/inmate labor to build it. Will be fun to see this take place in Pima and Santa Cruz counties, where folks are anti-fence, anti-SB1070. My guess is that she’ll try and use the inmates that are in the private prison system, since she can get cheap labor from them while the feds are paying her to house them.

I finally got to sign a Baja Arizona and a recall Brewer petition last weekend.

In many cities, northern at least, Black violence is often ignored because it is mostly Black on Black and little affects White people.

The Southwest does not have a large Black population and it may be that they are treating Hispanics as honorary Whites. I would guess that most Hispanic violence there is inter-group but the Whites haven’t learned to ignore it yet because it is being pimped as a threat to Whites.

Treats from the story JC links:

Officials did tell National Public Radio, however, that the state should be able to build it for less money than the federal government.

I’m guessing that would be because of this:

The goal is to use online donations and prison labor to build a beefed-up border fence

    [itals added]

So: forced labor is indeed the Arizona way of cost control.

Not that I think that there’s the slightest chance in hell that whoever the Brewer crime family hires will actually bill the state any less than the feds would have paid. That would miss the point of the free market, right.

The goal is to use online donations and prison labor to build a beefed-up border fence

Maybe the idea is to have the prison labor build the fence from the southern side, then leave them there and say they’ve escaped and are now Mexico’s problem? Save money on construction and incarceration! Plus, this is Arizona, so a bunch of the inmates were probably arrested for various versions of Breathing While Brown; some may even have Mexican citizenship, if only through their parents or grandparents. It’s win-win!

    Martin

    May 10, 2011 at 3:45 pm

    @Warren Terra:

Save money on construction and incarceration!

Oh, you’re completely missing the point. The reason that the private prison industry exists is because incarceration is profitable. The private prisons bid on the contracts against companies employing free labor. The taxpayer pays full rate pretty much no matter what, but rather than the state using that money to improve, I don’t know, rehabilitation services, the private prisons can use it for profits instead.

When prisoners = profits, you hold onto them, and encourage as many more as you can get away with. Hell, you might even propose a law that makes prisoners out of people who can’t show ID at the proper time.
