Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In after Baud. Damn.

“They all knew.”

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

People are weird.

Books are my comfort food!

So many bastards, so little time.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

The words do not have to be perfect.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

When I was faster i was always behind.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

I really like The Cars’ new album. Getting mixed reviews, from what I’ve seen, but to it sounds like them, and it sounds contemporary.

ADDED: I see the AV Club agrees with me: “change the band name on the album cover, and these songs could rule modern-rock radio”.

Worst concert ever. Cars in 1984. Slept through half of it.

My blog hours are now going to have to be divided between BJ and the blog I just discovered of my favorite Russian actor Oleg Menshikov. He actually seems to interact with commenters just like John Cole. But his writing style is less interesting. There isn’t anything about naked mopping or fat floofy cats on there.

    Sounds like Steely Dan.

The Cars have a new album out yesterday. Pretty good.

You want to talk upstaging? When I was 15, a friend took me to a Richard Marx concert. Opening act was, I shit you not, Warren Zevon.

    Sports Disaster Update:

Ryan Franklin, our befuddled former closer, has come in to pitch the fifth, has gotten one out in five batters, and has allowed 3 runs. This is against the Cubs, mind you.
Oh look, he got Fukudome to strike out.

    Best Show:
    Bruce “The Rising” tour

    Best Upstage:
John Hiatt for Hootie and the Blowfish, since I was there for him.

I saw The Clash on their ’82 Combat Rock tour. Joe Strummer was “MIA” for a couple of tour dates prior to the New Orleans gig, so there was uncertainty whether or not it would actually happen. Strummer did surface for the show and the Clash effin rawked!

The ultimate in upstaging was Jimi Hendrix opening for the Monkeees.

Am in the middle of reading the first draft of the upcoming new Laundry novel by Charlie Stross. Once it catches fire, it really gets going.

All I can say about it is, ummm…

Genesis was good on the Invisible Touch tour. Makes me feel old. Steve Winwood was good too. He looks really young for his age. He’s got to be in his sixties. Also too, Elvis Costello – I know the guy who was the tour bus driver for him and said he was a jerk. Was kinda disappointed hearing that. Also know somebody who spent some time with Diana Ross on a professional basis and said she was very nice and polite.

In the timeframe that I think you’re talking about, the Police and Cars were great. When Sting went off to sing crap like “Do the Russians Love Their Children Too?” (um…do ya think, Sting?), he was too pretentious to take seriously anymore.

@stuckinred: I’m going to Bonnaroo this year. You should come. The Buffalo Springfield will be playing! Lots more bands too.

ok, fwiw, name-dropping (yet again here; you guys bring out the worst in me, i swear; all your fault), but i dated david robinson for a couple of years a while back. still great pals, a sweet guy. has been excited about the CD but not so much the tour; not his idea. eager to hear how awful the travel and hours and craziness still are, as predicted.

true confessions, tho; loved the police, liked the cars, back in the day. listening to them more while dating david – i admit, felt obliged (a wee ashamed i didn’t know their portfolio better) – found i not only liked them better than i realized, but actually recognized many of the tunes on a more ‘background’ basis. cool songs, but not quite the power grabbers we got from the police. in any case, this cars reunion is a long time coming, as it was talked about some twelve years ago. then ben died, and that was that for a while.

i’m just glad for david there’s good reaction to the new stuff. when he played it for me six months ago, i was pretty impressed, even before it was mixed. nice; enjoy.

ok, fun stuff, but enough. bear in mind i’m fully aware none of you is impressed with this sort of thing, which is likely why it felt ok to share it. ignore at will.

    @Paul in KY:

oh wow, the springfield! now there was a band! i still have to play their ‘best of’ album every month or so, just to get my head, er, not straight exactly, and certainly not ‘right’, but somehow ‘corrected’, if you will. do enjoy them for me!

@lllphd: Will do! They are my #1 act to see there, Arcade Fire will be #2 and The Decemberists #3, with Black Uhuru & Union Station probably 4 & 5.
