I don’t like certain commenter’s who act like shits, berate other commenter’s, add nothing worth saying, and make comments knowing they’d get their ass beat in real life for saying it out loud. Just skip her and read something else.     I love ABL and want to have her spite babies (I almost typed “spit babies”, sounds vulgar). Like others, I don’t understand why the haters can’t just skip over her entries. The author of each post is clearly noted at the top.

    But I got to thinkin’. I’m not a frequent commenter and I don’t get the chance to read many comment threads. But for a frequent commenter/ABL hater, her entries must really chap their ass. People are going to COMMENT on her posts and the frequent commenter is going to feel LEFT OUT FOR FUCKS SAKE if they can’t read & comment so THEY HAVE TO read her entries in order to participate, and MY GOD!!! All that in-your-face blackness! and womanness! Doesn’t she understand the white man is under attack? We have a liberal black president!

    Actually, part of the problem is that sometimes a group of people want to have a serious discussion of certain issues while others are bored and want to snark and poke at each other. People get at cross purposes and lose their shit because of it. A good solution would be to have an open thread handy for the bored types so that they don’t blow up the serious discussion threads. Of course another good solution would be for some people to think before they hit submit, but we can’t have everything, now can we?

I have been reading this blog since 2007 and find it to be one of the most interesting sites that I visit. What I do find strange is that there are multiple sites that I visit where folks offensive comments are just deleted with no comment. Yet, lots of people here are just aghast that a thread was closed because of some guy’s condescending, rather jerky comment. Where have y’all been? Much worse happens on even the best regulated of sites.

    When for some reason ABL tweaks me, I find myself giving some more thought to whatever that was. Sometimes I find that I think she has simply gone off-track (IMHO) for reasons that I disagree with. Sometimes I find that I’ve looked past what she sees.

    After spending some weeks crossing the South on a motorcycle through smaller communities and finding myself the recipient of entirely gratuitous racist statements I have a lot more understanding of a sensitivity of that issue. That sensitivity may go places where it isn’t called for, but chances are good that it has a basis.

    I’ve never been blind to racism but I also have never been in a position to be taken as a participant and sounding board for it. The casual assumption that due to something (Harley, white, grey hair, tatts, whatever the fuck) that I’m on the side of this shit was damn astonishing. It isn’t a measure of ‘white privilege’ that I don’t have a measure for living with this, it is a measure of not being victimized by it. I’ve run into it as the only white at a gathering, but I get to go home – not so on the other side.

    I do sometimes crticize this President and if he were a white politician I would and I would if he were a green Martian. That is about policy and a country on a horrid track long before he became President.

    If getting poked by ABL doesn’t provoke thought about that issue, then there is a scroll key (there also is growing up). I don’t read this blog or comments to get fucking validated…

    I’m a middle class white guy, that works with a large majority of black people, and have always had plenty of black friends. (only 3 or 4 in high school, but to be fair we only had like 10 in a class of 1000+ kids) but the truth is I will never be able to understand what it’s like to be black.
    This does remind me of an incident years ago. One night, about 3 a.m. in Chicago, I was sitting at a stop light when I saw someone in my rear view mirror walking behind my car. I could only see from belt to shoulder, but instinctively reached to lock my doors. Which of course made a distinctive noise. As the body moved passed my car I saw that it was a young black guy. He in turn looked at me, a 30 something white guy, and knowing that I had locked my door, shook his head in dismay. I simply laughed, because there was no way to explain to him that I didn’t do it because he was black, because I had no idea what color he was when I locked the door. Was his reaction founded on a misinterpretation, yes. Was it completely justified, yes. In fact, had I seen a young black guy walking closely to my car on an empty street at 3am, there’s no doubt that I would make sure my doors were locked.

    The majority of people who comment here all have something in common and having no life has nothing to do with it.

    Commenters want to be heard. Period.

    Bloggers want to be heard.

    They want to vent in an anonymous way without the same consequences they’d face if they were having a physical fight. I’m not saying it’s positive or negative, it just IS.

    A lot of people want their commentary commented on, so they can feel like what they say matters to someone. Anyone.

    The point of that particular comment, however, was that CS, of all people, was pointing a finger at other commenters here and proclaiming that they have no lives outside of BJ, when to all intents and purposes, he’s a poster child for that condition himself.

    So there’s that level of willed ignorance where people pretend that they’re better than the other people they’re criticizing, and that other people are not entitled to beat up on them just as ferociously in return.

    And this particular blog has an especially aggressive in-group culture among a critical mass of commenters who dominate the threads, “other” people who they decide they don’t like or just look ripe for ganging up on, and generally behaving like the kids in Lord of the Flies.

    So there’s some specifically nasty stuff about BJ that is not replicated universally across the interwebs, and that was what I was speaking to in my comment.

    I stopped paying attention to ABL when she made a post about how she had a get together at her friends house when he wasn’t there and when she found out the neighbors complained about it the next day she called them racist.

    I’ve had the cops come to my house for gatherings where we were “not that loud” a few times when everyone there was white and the person who lived in the house was actually there. Someone called the cops on my friend once because he was drinking alone in his apartment and accidently dropped his wine bottle. The fact that she considered a simple complaint the next day to be too far showed me the prism she views the world from.
