Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

This blog will pay for itself.

When we show up, we win.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Books are my comfort food!

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Giving up is unforgivable.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

I went over to the New York Daily News website because I was curious as to whether they had put the Strauss-Kahn perp walk on the front page, and found this lovely little item.

Various sources are reporting that the French have recovered all the data from the two “black boxes” from that Air France plane from Rio to Paris that went down two years ago. These things spent two years under four miles or so of salt water, and all the data were recovered. Pretty amazing, if you ask me.

Somewhere a marketing exec at whatever company made the flash memory in those is spending the morning wondering if there’s any acceptable way of making an ad campaign based on this, without mentioning that over 200 people died.

Here’s my daily dose of outrage: a NC woman lost a custody battle primarily because she has breast cancer. Here’s part of the judge’s reasoning (and I do use that term loosely):

In her ruling, Judge Nancy Gordon cited forensic psychologist Dr. Helen Brantley,” according to Good Morning America: “The more contact [the children] have with the non-ill parent, the better they do. They divide their world into the cancer world and a free of cancer world. Children want a normal childhood, and it is not normal with an ill parent.”

    Un-fucking-believable.

    THE

Jazz Superluminar is right. The Warsaw Ghetto functioned as a holding pen for Jews prior to being sent to extermination camps like Treblinka.

Over 100,000 of the Ghetto’s residents died due to rampant disease or starvation, as well as random killings, even before the Nazis began massive deportations of the inhabitants from the Ghetto’s Umschlagplatz to the Treblinka extermination camp during the Grossaktion Warschau, part of the countrywide Operation Reinhard. Between Tisha B’Av (July 23) and Yom Kippur (September 21) of 1942, about 254,000 Ghetto residents (or at least 300,000 by different accounts)[7] were sent to Treblinka and murdered there.[8] Polish resistance officer Jan Karski reported to the Western governments in 1942 on the situation in the Ghetto and on the extermination camps. By the end of 1942, it was clear that the deportations were to their deaths, and many of the remaining Jews decided to fight.[7]

    @Yutsano:

I just lurve it when a hard-right Christianist goes for money over faith.

But you don’t have to choose if you follow the Prosperity Gospel! Jesus was crucified so I could drive a Porsche. [Note: I do not own a porsche]

@THE: jaysus Spock, Polish Jews and suspected Jews, undesireables, Roms, homosexuals, mongrel races, but all Poles….but NO GAS CHAMBERS IN THE GHETTO!
    It wasnt a deathcamp.
    Quit splitting hairs.
Warsaw and Gaza have a lot of similiarities.

the two ghettos were linked by a single footbridge. The Nazis then closed the Warsaw Ghetto from the outside world on November 16, 1940, by building a wall, topped with barbed wire, and deploying armed guards.

Sound familiar to the Gaza Blockade?

When you consider that the average food ration in the Warsaw Ghetto during 1942 was only 186 calories a day, it is obvious that the occupants of the Ghetto were not intended to survive.

So why would anyone who was not intended for extermination be put in there?

ya know…my point is sure the jews were treated horrifically, but that doesnt give them a pass to act like Nazis towards the Palestinians.
If anything, the experience of the Jews should sensitize them.
And they are acting like Nazis.
    Deal.

And they are acting like Nazis.

It’s a poor choice of analogy. It is exaggerated.
    There are much more-accurate analogies.

For example, if you said that Israelis were treating the Palestinian Arabs the same way the Americans treated the North American Indians, I would not object.

    They are acting like colonialists.

    @THE: jesusHfuckingkeeyristinnahandcart.

    It is an accurate analogy.
Americans didnt BLOCKADE the indians or wall them up in a ghetto.

This is generational. ppl my age have grown up watching the Palestinians starve. We dont give a shit about eratz israel. their holocaust guilt card has run out with us.
    Get over it.
Israel has become what they worst despised. Quit trying to softpedal it.

    @Ghanima Atreides:
I think perhaps you need to study the Nazis, to understand why they really were different.

As a young person, I found Hitler a fascinating case-study of the “problem of evil”.
Studying him played a significant part in convincing me that there is no God.
