Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

I really should read my own blog.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

This really is a full service blog.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

I get kind of an ’80s album cover vibe from this (via one of the blogs we monitor and mock as needed).

Anyone on the front page post about this? Yglesias got mugged.

An Evening On The Beltway Yuengling and Minor Assault Circuit

So . . . I was walking back from the home of Megan McArdle and Peter Suderman and instead of doing the normal thing and taking Q Street west to 5th and then walking south, I wanted to take a shortcut by walking south on North Capitol to then cut southwest on New York. But then lo and behold right by Catania Bakery a couple of dudes ran up from behind, punched me in the head, then kicked me a couple of times before running off.

Given where he was spending his time, it looks like instant Karma payback.

    Thanks, God.

If Brooks is, as it appears by his facial expression, plotting a practical joke; and if he also, as it appears by his left hand’s position, hiding something; and if he did, in fact, go on to light a fart in the general direction of the Disgraced Former Speaker…

Well, then I will be a David Brooks fan for life. I don’t care what anyone else says.

I don’t wish random unprovoked violence on anyone, so I’m glad Yglesias is OK.

But the only reason I can conceive of that anyone should have to spend an evening with McMegan would be to force her, Clockwork Orange style, to watch a movie documenting , mocking, and correcting the arithmetic atrocities and other egregious errors that have appeared on her blog. Only problem is that such a film would be about 3 weeks in length.

I realize that this may seem like “random, unprovoked violence” – but no, it has very much been provoked.

So. Today we hit the debt ceiling, and the House GOPer’s have done nothing to raise it yet. Meanwhile, the Fed has to waste time moving monies around to keep the government open.

My question is: How much is it costing us to implement all of these cost shifting measures to keep the government running while these evil, irresponsible Republican assholes play around with the country’s economic well-being and global faith in our credit?

Keep in mind, they’re only 5 months into their two-year reign. We’re not even a quarter of the way through this shit yet.

Let’s talk more about Medicare vouchers:

The Democrats lead in the generic Congressional ballot by a single point, 42% to 41%, with 16% undecided—well within the survey’s margin of error. And yet the trend is unmistakable, as this represents a six-point turnaround from the Battleground survey of late October 2010, where voters supported Republicans by a five-point margin, 47% to 42%.

Horrible. Just Horrible. (back to the Bobo thread.)
Not seeing it as an album cover, though. It’s a poster for a movie–a vanity project somewhat on the order of Pavarotti’s “Yes, Giorgio!,” but with many hi-jinks with a goofy liberal sidekick (played by the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz- a real straw man!)
The movie is now “writing itself” in my head, no matter how hard I try to ignore it. I’m sticking my fingers in my ears, singing filthy limericks, and it’s no use– I can barely see the screen for all the ad copy running over Bobo’s phiz like the Mississippi flood. What’s the visual equivalent of an earworm?
The album cover thing is bad enough– you start thinking of song titles, band types and arrangements, etc. But plot treatments are swimming unbidden before the better angels of my nature– Bobo stumbles on the formula for a “banality bomb” that might destroy his credibility forever (cough!!cough-snort-cough!!) unless he can keep it away from the evil Dr. Thugman.
There’s more, but I’m getting bored, too. I’ll be fine as long as I don’t go back and look… at … the … damn….picture.
If only I could stop seeing it!

It’s the makeup of the locker room and the intense environment surrounding making and staying on a team. People devote their entire lives to making the show and they don’t want to fuck it up being a pioneer. They asked Hank Arron yesterday if Jason Heyward, a young African American on the Braves, was aware of his responsibilty to minority kids. Hank said, “he need to focus on the game right now, he can do that later”.

Eh I’d hazard a guess that locker room culture is as much a reflection of the culture at large as anything else. If more people went “he’s gay? *yawn*” then I’d say it would be less a factor in pro sports.

Problem is professional sports is mired in this Christianist bullshit, as well as the whole machismo bullshit. I was shocked when I learned how many hockey players are evangelical Christians. They’re recruited, it’s like a fucking cult. You can talk about the gay agenda but there is definitely an evangelical Christian agenda and I say to the gays: bring it on. @piratedan: (sorry for the delay.. I had to make dinner for kids)

I get some of that. For example, Sully’s swooning over the Ryan budget was vomit inducing. He supported the Iraq war. He thinks of himself as belonging to some kind of mythical conservatism. etc.

But he’s also a guy who has consistently calls out the media for not calling torture by its true name. He appreciates and highlights Obama’s maturity (although he would mistakenly call it Obama’s innate conservatism) and openly advocated — I think effectively — for his election during the primaries. He recognizes the craziness of the right and calls them out on it.

Meanwhile, Halperin is a complete and utter fool, who is a HUGE symbol to me of the worst of the MSM. He’s entralled by right wing frames, and treats politics as a combination of gossip show and sportscast. Malkin is a vindictive, venemous creature. Erick Erickson is as smart (and as painful) as a bag of hammers. Megan McArdle (who is not on the “mock” list, but should be) is a lazy thinker who seems to start from her preferred conclusion and work backwards, carelessly assembling “facts” together to reach her conclusion, whether they are true or not.

This squirrel’s compatriot has just rung him via mobile to alert him to the discovery of an especially abundant cache of walnuts nearby.

@MagicPanda: okay then MP, he calls torture, what it is… torture. He knows how to label concepts appropriately, and yet, at the very same time; have his lips firmly attached to the ones condoning the act in the first place. That is somehow supposed to make me think better of him?

He doesn’t call out the craziness of the Right, sure there are a few candidates he has issues with, but it’s not because they are freaking loony tunes, it’s because they’re not insiders like him and his ilk. Ryan is just as freaking off the reservation as anyone, yet because he has a nice haircut and dresses well, we’re supposed to take him seriously when he decries the need for a system that has been in place for multiple generations that people have been paying into, that they like, trust and use as being somehow superfluous and no longer necessary and here’s a coupon for further care because the best we can do to meet this grave threat of a debt looming over us is to raid an account/program that millions of Americans have been paying into all of their lives without raising taxes and addressing that odious deficit in 25 years. That’s not serious, that’s fucking pathetic and toadies like Sullivan lapped it all up because dooming your parents and mine to inferior care at greater costs and robbing them of this investment would allow more of his rich sponsors to have more cash.

Sullivan may not be an equivalent of Hitler or even Goebbels, but I doubt very many of us here would piss on him if he was on fire. His kind of palatable around the edges crap is what allows these odious asshats to keep moving the goalposts in regards to what should be under discussion because we have to keep explaining to folks like you why he’s such a farkin’ menace.

@stuckinred: Not for nothing, and coming to the thread really late, but my ex the Canuckistani was also a helluva defenceman. (He even taught me to spell it rite! :) He was even auditioned by the Avalanche at one point, but was turned away because he is openly gay. At least that was his theory. It was funny watching guys get on him for it too. 6’3″ of pure defenceman toughness hitting you hard is difficult to recover from.

@piratedan: Whaa? Your statements are just completely disconnected from reality.

okay then MP, he calls torture, what it is… torture. He knows how to label concepts appropriately, and yet, at the very same time; have his lips firmly attached to the ones condoning the act in the first place. That is somehow supposed to make me think better of him?

On torture, AS is to the right of, say, Greenwald, but I would say he’s to the left of, say, Yglesias. He’s one of the few guys out there who keeps calling these guys war criminals.

I take your point about Ryan. That pissed me off a lot. But I think it’s just erroneous to say that he doesn’t call out the craziness on the right.

If your issue is that Sullivan isn’t a dogmatic liberal, then sure. You’re right. He’s not a dogmatic liberal. If your issue is that he’s sometimes wrong, sure. He’s sometimes wrong.
