Comrade Mary
Ha! I wonder how long he’s been waiting to do something like this.
(Shouldn’t you be cleaning? Get back to work!)
PurpleGirl
LOL. Yes, I love it. Talk about making lemonade from lemons.
TimE
Oh man, that is *way* cheekier than I gave anyone in the administration credit for. I am so getting one of these.
Cris (without an H)
It’s not the shirt that’s awesome — it’s the fact that it’s an official campaign shirt. A campaign that knows how to laugh — who expected that from a national level Democrat, even this one?
Susan Kitchens
Can’t wait for those tee shirts to be bought, donated to thrift stores, sent overseas, and then captured again overseas using the Repatriating Tee Shirts idea I saw over at Sullys. The mind boggles at the meta-on-meta messages that’d come from THAT!
(Oh, and if you don’t want a tee shirt, you can get a Made In America Mug, too)
aisce
that’s an official campaign shirt?! i love it. that’s so unlike him though.
rethuglicans have no idea what’s coming after reelection. none.
MagicPanda
Ha!
BTW, I love the “Made in America” slogan. It ties in with the idea of bringing jobs back home, which I think we should be talking about more.
Bulworth
Ordered 1 XL.
Bulworth
How about a new Tunch “Made In The USA” shirt? I can haz plz?
Svensker
Obama does lots o’ things that piss me off, but this ain’t one of those things. :)
Villago Delenda Est
This tshirt is just win, win, win, win, win.
A real in your face to the fucktards.
stuckinred
Maybe they could work one up with this on it and send it to Duncan Hunter.
Mike in NC
The Donald would order one (size XXL) only if you could convince him it was made in a Chinese prison or Kenyan sweatshop.
Violet
Awesome! Didn’t think the administration had it in them to do such a thing.
Poopyman
Heh! Love it!
And the pic on the front is of a guy I could have a beer with, too. Also.
catclub
OT: Political Animal considers the shallow GOP field.
Benen assessed Perry with this: “Perry reconsiders
[presidential run], unless there’s a secret reason he’s afraid of national scrutiny”
Boy do I miss Molly Ivins!
mikefromArlington
I just donated to get the blue one…guess I’ll have to donate to get this one too
Alan
OT: Good news for Democrats–bad news for the GOP– happening in Jacksonville. Alvin Brown may be edging out the Republican candidate for Mayor. Yesterday’s race is still too close to call. Surprising since it’s a GOP controlled town.
Comrade Javamanphil
Awesome.
But let’s start the pool for first journo to decry this shirt as (uncivil/unbecoming a president/too mocking/hurting the GOP fee-fees/whatever.) As always, I take Halperin.
aisce
@MagicPanda:
certainly a lot better than Win the Future.
thank you donald trump, you racist jackass, you have no idea what a boon you’ve been to this nation now. just never in the way you hoped.
Cat Lady
@Comrade Javamanphil:
This is great news for John McCain.
ETA: The Big O is in the ‘hood today. Literally, a couple of blocks from where I am right this very moment.
Bulworth
And way too partisany.
Yutsano
@Comrade Javamanphil: I’m going with Nooners or MoDo. But I r cynical like that.
SIA
@Bulworth: Don’t try to pretend you don’t know Tunch was educated in a madrassas in Indonesia. We have photos of him there. Cole snuck him into the country right before the 2004 election.
R-Jud
@Mike in NC:
Xl for him. XXL for The Combover.
Radon Chong
That shit better not turn out to have been made in China, though I don’t think Obama’s team would be that stupid.
grape_crush
There’s a mug, too, with the same thing.
Weak odds on one coming out that says, “I got a long form for ya, bitchez!”
dmsilev
I call foul. The shirt says “Made in the USA”, and while it is doubtless true that Obama was *born* in Hawaii, we have little or no hard evidence about where his parents were when he was conceived.
We need to see the long form conception certificate!
Chris
This isn’t the first time Team Obama has done something like this. I have a photo magnet purchased during the ’08 campaign that shows Obama and Michele sharing that “terrorist fist bump” during the nominating convention.
JCT
@dmsilev: Whoa, don’t give those idiots any ideas.
Hmmm, wonder if Springsteen will let them use his old “Born in the USA” at campaign stops.
AxelFoley
Epic win, OFA!
scav
@dmsilev: Conception? Ha! We need a complete 9-month (24/7) long documentation of the entire manufacturing/construction process.
Short Bus Bully
Will drive the wingnuts fucking CRAZY. I’m buying two.
MagicPanda
@aisce: Yeah, Win the Future was full of fail.
salacious crumb
well…Jon Stewart went on O’Reilly’s show to say there is a possibility he may not vote for Obama. That makes him a racist!!
MagicPanda
@JCT: If Obama used Born in the USA at rallies, the GOP would go on TV and accuse him of being an America-hating liberal by pointing to the lyrics.
Violet
@Comrade Javamanphil:
I’m thinking the first criticism will be in the “uncivil/conduct unbecoming a president” vein, so that means it’ll have to be someone who routinely operates in that stick-up-their-rear manner. Someone like George Will. I don’t think he’ll be first, but he’ll certainly tut-tut.
I think first out of the gate will be someone who can simultaneously chuckle at it (showing their humor credentials) and speak sadly of the degradation of our political discourse. Perhaps Bobo would be appropriate for that task?
slag
Yeah that’s great, but Elizabeth Warren asked me, via email, to fill this out and pass it along: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/knowbeforeyouowe/, and I can’t refuse anything Elizabeth Warren asks of me. She seems to work so hard!
Also too (in case someone else missed it like I did), this is some awesome Photoshop work: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/05/picture-of-the-day-superheroes-the-ultimate-situation-room-meme/238689/.
Trinity
Awesome. I just ordered mine!
AxelFoley
@Chris:
Heh, my sister’s got one of those.
Citizen_X
@Comrade Javamanphil:
I thought Halperin had been taken off he market due to all the strong side effects it caused: projectile vomiting, painful headaches, suicidal thoughts, etc. I always prefer to take…
Oh, I’m sorry: you mean Halperin the person. I always get that confused.
MagicPanda
@Violet: Oh, Halperin is the king of worrying about Republican feelings. Just not in a stick-up-the-rear way.
Do you rememeber how he said that Obama made a huge gaffe by not giving President Bush enough credit for catching Osama Bin Laden? And how he partially corrected it by inviting him to visit ground zero with him, but that he waited too long to make the request?
vtr
I just received the email from the Obama 2012 folks, advertising the tee-shirts. It also talked about Jerome Corsi and his delusions. One of them I had never heard before: It turns out that there is “an infinite supply of petroleum” just waiting for at the earth’s core! Anyone know about this? Any chance it comes naturally refined as unleaded regular and no. 2 heating oil? Where I can get drilling rights? How Corsi finds someone to print his books? Why he’s not in a hospital?
Ash Can
@aisce:
Oh, I don’t know about that. After all, the White House or some affiliated outfit came out with a “Big F#@&ing Deal” t-shirt after ACA passed, and the prez has shown on numerous occasions that he has a wicked dry wit.
mikefromArlington
All their stuff has a symbol from the union that makes them
Josie
I was thinking Andy Card (although not a journalist) might be one to find fault with it as not having the proper respect for the office. Remember his obsession with jackets and shirt sleeves, etc.
WereBear
Not the first time; both partner and I have “BFD” shirts in honor of Joe Biden.
JCT
@MagicPanda: Hmmm, and that’s different than what they do all the time anyway ? /grin
Ash Can
Also too, I wish I could buy up a few cases of these suckers and hand them out in the lobby of Trump Tower downtown.
Comrade Javamanphil
@Violet: Bobo is certainly a good option. Although on further reflection I am now regretting I didn’t pick Sully awarding the Obama campaign a Moore award as the opening shot in the “no snark for presidents” war.
grape_crush
@slag: Also too (in case someone else missed it like I did), this is some awesome Photoshop work…
Much better than my humble contribution to the attempted meme-ification of that Gingrich-Brooks photo:

catclub
@vtr: google search on ‘abiogenic petroleum’ should help.
Here is the first line at Wikipedia:
“Abiogenic petroleum origin is a discredited hypothesis that was proposed as an alternative to theory of biological petroleum origin.”
Sounds like a winner in the rightwing nut crowd! Except for the ones who actually pay for oil drilling and don’t want any more dry wells than necessary. Funny how actually needing to get it right changes one’s credulousness.
Violet
@MagicPanda:
Yeah, but I don’t think the first criticism will be in the “worrying about Republican feelings” style. It’ll be more in the “conduct unbecoming a president” manner. But since the shirt is funny as hell, and pretty much everyone with even a small sense of humor will get that, the first criticism needs to be from someone who can acknowledge the joke, but then criticize Team Obama for making a joke at all. I think Bobo is the right guy for that.
catclub
I bet someone will get a non ‘Made in USA’ shirt and transfer the image onto that for their 15 seconds of fame pointing out the hypocrisy.
dmsilev
@Violet: I’m going to go with self-proclaimed humor expert Richard Cohen.
Fred

Comrade Javamanphil
@catclub: Oh sure, but what does Conservapedia have to say on the topic, hmmm? This, actually and it’s predictably stupid.
Fred
@Comrade Javamanphil: Conservapedia?! Is that a joke? Not only do they need to create a parallel reality. They need to create parallel reality websites?
MagicPanda
@Violet: Sounds like we need to start an office pool for this. :-)
Mnemosyne
@Fred:
Just wait until you see their conservative Bible project. Apparently all of that “love your neighbor” and “take care of the poor” stuff is just too, too liberal to be allowed to remain.
Which means that the conservative Bible will be about three paragraphs long, but anyway ….
Montysano
@Comrade Javamanphil:
“Exxon’s Australia chief, Mark Nolan, told an industry conference in Adelaide, Australia, that “the end of oil is nowhere in sight.” Suck on that, hippies.
Cue Brick Oven Bill to tell us all about oil shale.
slag
@grape_crush: Wait, was yours the scream one? That was my favorite.
Fergus Wooster
@catclub:
I have known petroleum geologists who are also young-earth creationists. At least one who owned his own exploration company.
That keeps me up at night.
Culture of Truth
I love it.
And it seems very much like something Obama would do, to me.
Montysano
A-a-a-a-a-nd right on cue, Matt Drudge is on the case: “OBAMA CAMPAIGN CASHES IN ON BIRTH CONTROVERSY”. Let the symphony of butthurt begin!
Ivan Ivanovich Renko
@Montysano: Awww, linkfail!
Mnemosyne
@Montysano:
If that’s the case, then the people who picked Mark “Matt Drudge Rules Our World” Halperin are going to win the prize.
MagicPanda
We’ll see. I was a Halperin voter, so perhaps my ship will come in.
I was considering nominating this as the first article
http://swampland.time.com/2011/05/18/birtherism-death-watch-jumps-the-shark/
But it’s really more snark than handwringing, so I think it doesn’t count.
Chris
Now THIS is the kind of business acumen that wins you Celebrity Apprentice!
grape_crush
@slag:
Nah. Mine was the wiseass comment near the bottom of the comment thread and then the “rat in a cage” GIMPing (since I didn’t use Photoshop, I can’t call it ‘photoshopping’) of the Gingrich-Brooks photo.
Montysano
@Ivan Ivanovich Renko:
WTF?? Drudge Report.
Bulworth
WIN!
Jerry
@@SIA: Why won’t Tunch release the long form pedigree?
grandpajohn
@Comrade Javamanphil: hmmm so according to them there are vast undiscovered deposits? So exactly how does this disprove the idea that at sometime in the future we will still reach a point of peak oil. the only way not to is for the oil deposits in someway to start regenerating and producing new oil to replace that removed.
Fucen Pneumatic Fuck Wrench Tarmal
@aisce:
if coupled with a thorough and serious discussion of adding obama to mt. rushmore, we might actually have peak wingnut in our lifetime.
grandpajohn
@Montysano: Drudge? oh the agony and the irony, The big O cashes in on a controversy , and who was it that created the controversy? payback is a bitch ain’t it.
Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther
I just fought myself back from the brink of buying one. I never ever wear tshirts like this, and the husband, while he would enjoy the fact of this one, wouldn’t wear it either.
But damn. I really want one! Can’t someone make it in a nice hoodie, or a v-neck babydoll? Hmmmm?
grandpajohn
@Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther: Go for the mug then, they also have that same design
Probably what I will do, Since I live in South Carolina, I could only wear the tee shirt at home which would be no fun, well I could wear it in public but I would probably get shunned.
Nellcote
@Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther:
As noted upthread, you can get it on a mug.
grape_crush
@slag: Oh, and the Brooks/monkey-pron one as well.
estamm
These t-shirts better actually be manufactured in the USA, or the right will go ape shit, and the Obama campaign will look silly. I’ve ordered one, so I’ll know myself soon.
Ash Can
@Montysano: Actually, the Drudge Report simply links through to a Jake Tapper piece about the t-shirts. Tapper, to his credit and not surprisingly, makes it clear in the article that he has no problem with the shirts, and thinks birthers are idiots.
So, there’s actually no butthurt here. The Halperin, Will, etc. betters are still in the running; the sweepstakes is still on.
ETA @ estamm: I’ve never known the Obama campaign to use anything but American-made, union-made products.
flukebucket
@grandpajohn:
Shunned? I live in Georgia and if I were to wear one of those out in public I would probably get assaulted and my car would get keyed.
Mnemosyne
@Ash Can:
And it wouldn’t be a Tapper article without some good old-fashioned concern trolling:
Montysano
@Ash Can:
Well sure, that’s how Drudge operates. He knows that the 27%-er low-information mouth-breathers will not click the link. They just read the headline,then wait for further instructions from Rush/Sean/Glenn.
Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther
@grandpajohn: @Nellcote: Ack! (she said, channeling her inner Cathy) I need more mugs like I need more tshirts I’ll never wear – indeed, less so. The “I can see Russia from this blog” mug I bought from this here site represented a complete breakdown of my own moral authority, and it had to be crow-barred into the cabinet.
And aside from anything else, I would want to wear it out and about for the world to see!
Ash Can
@Mnemosyne: LOL! Good catch.
Gee, Jake, ya think??
At least he doesn’t drop one of those “Questions, however, persist” turds. And I suppose just the fact that I’m so willing to give a newsie credit for even that much is a commentary on the state of our news media these days.
JPL
@flukebucket: I live in GA also and thought that I’d order a few coffee mugs and smile every time I used them. I also have friends with a different opinion and my top cabinets have glass doors where I will keep them in.
Montysano
@Ash Can:
But I feel sure that, at some point, Some People will be concerned, and will have valid questions.
rikyrah
I love this and will be ordering 2
Darkrose
@Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther: Where can you find the mug? I’d love the shirt, and I’d totally wear it in public, but I really need a 3XL., which they don’t have.
grape_crush
@Darkrose: Where can you find the mug?
https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/o2012-made-in-the-usa-mug-am?source=20110518_js_msn1
JCT
@Darkrose: Here you go, I’ve ordered 2, nice to start the day with a grin.
https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/o2012-made-in-the-usa-mug?source=20110518_js_nd
SIA
@Jerry: BECAUSE! He’s a secret mouselin!
grumpy realist
Shouldn’t we be demanding that we be allowed to order the long-armed form of the tee-shirt?
Evilbeard
I just bought the coffee mug version. Can’t wait to get it.
metalgirl
@efgoldman: Agree! I still can’t delete her webpage from my browser links — too sad!!! Molly would like this shirt — I’m glad I ordered one when I read the article on “The Hill”!
hamletta
@Radon Chong: Skipped to the end to answer you, so pardon me if it’s already been said, but hells yeah, it’s made here.
Even in a right-to-work-for-less state like Tennessee, all Dem Party merch is made by union shops. There’s a union bug somewhere on that shirt.
Fucen Pneumatic Fuck Wrench Tarmal
what, why can’t i get it in an tall? is an xlt too much to ask?
grandpajohn
@Mnemosyne: Exploiting,like bush and 9/11? WMDs in Iraq? this type exploitation?
Well hell yes of course he is thats what smart intelligent politicians do, exploit the fuck-ups and stupidity of their opponents.that’s exactly what makes the whole thing so great, not only does Obama exploit the hatred and stupidity of these morons for political gain, he also rakes in campaign money off of their disgusting behavior,.
Exploitation is what made this the great country it is, exploitation of the native Americans, the black slaves, the poor immigrants from Europe. The system of free enterprise was built on the backs of the Sweatshops and 14hour, 7 days a week labor forces,Our history books tell us of the “Robber Baron Era” so why would we not expect our politicians to exploit the stupidity of their opponents?
grandpajohn
@Ash Can: So how does one go about trivializing concerns that are so irrelevant as to be pushing the limit to even be considered trivial to start with., well except to MSM people such as Tapper
