Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Republicans do not trust women.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Let there be snark.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

It’s not the shirt that’s awesome — it’s the fact that it’s an official campaign shirt. A campaign that knows how to laugh — who expected that from a national level Democrat, even this one?

Can’t wait for those tee shirts to be bought, donated to thrift stores, sent overseas, and then captured again overseas using the Repatriating Tee Shirts idea I saw over at Sullys. The mind boggles at the meta-on-meta messages that’d come from THAT!

(Oh, and if you don’t want a tee shirt, you can get a Made In America Mug, too)

I’m thinking the first criticism will be in the “uncivil/conduct unbecoming a president” vein, so that means it’ll have to be someone who routinely operates in that stick-up-their-rear manner. Someone like George Will. I don’t think he’ll be first, but he’ll certainly tut-tut.

I think first out of the gate will be someone who can simultaneously chuckle at it (showing their humor credentials) and speak sadly of the degradation of our political discourse. Perhaps Bobo would be appropriate for that task?

I just received the email from the Obama 2012 folks, advertising the tee-shirts. It also talked about Jerome Corsi and his delusions. One of them I had never heard before: It turns out that there is “an infinite supply of petroleum” just waiting for at the earth’s core! Anyone know about this? Any chance it comes naturally refined as unleaded regular and no. 2 heating oil? Where I can get drilling rights? How Corsi finds someone to print his books? Why he’s not in a hospital?

“Abiogenic petroleum origin is a discredited hypothesis that was proposed as an alternative to theory of biological petroleum origin.”

Yeah, but I don’t think the first criticism will be in the “worrying about Republican feelings” style. It’ll be more in the “conduct unbecoming a president” manner. But since the shirt is funny as hell, and pretty much everyone with even a small sense of humor will get that, the first criticism needs to be from someone who can acknowledge the joke, but then criticize Team Obama for making a joke at all. I think Bobo is the right guy for that.

These t-shirts better actually be manufactured in the USA, or the right will go ape shit, and the Obama campaign will look silly. I’ve ordered one, so I’ll know myself soon.

@Montysano: Actually, the Drudge Report simply links through to a Jake Tapper piece about the t-shirts. Tapper, to his credit and not surprisingly, makes it clear in the article that he has no problem with the shirts, and thinks birthers are idiots.

So, there’s actually no butthurt here. The Halperin, Will, etc. betters are still in the running; the sweepstakes is still on.

ETA @ estamm: I’ve never known the Obama campaign to use anything but American-made, union-made products.

    @grandpajohn:

Shunned? I live in Georgia and if I were to wear one of those out in public I would probably get assaulted and my car would get keyed.

    @Ash Can:

And it wouldn’t be a Tapper article without some good old-fashioned concern trolling:

Selling products featuring the long-form birth certificate might be a risk for the campaign, given how seriously the president and many of his top aides have objected to the birther lie, some suggesting that it is in no small part a racist way to make the president seem “other.” Merchandise featuring the birth certificate could be seen as trivializing those concerns, or even crassly exploiting them to raise campaign cash.

Well sure, that’s how Drudge operates. He knows that the 27%-er low-information mouth-breathers will not click the link. They just read the headline, then wait for further instructions from Rush/Sean/Glenn.

@grandpajohn: @Nellcote: Ack! (she said, channeling her inner Cathy) I need more mugs like I need more tshirts I’ll never wear – indeed, less so. The “I can see Russia from this blog” mug I bought from this here site represented a complete breakdown of my own moral authority, and it had to be crow-barred into the cabinet.

And aside from anything else, I would want to wear it out and about for the world to see!

    Gee, Jake, ya think??

At least he doesn’t drop one of those “Questions, however, persist” turds. And I suppose just the fact that I’m so willing to give a newsie credit for even that much is a commentary on the state of our news media these days.

@flukebucket: I live in GA also and thought that I’d order a few coffee mugs and smile every time I used them. I also have friends with a different opinion and my top cabinets have glass doors where I will keep them in.

Even in a right-to-work-for-less state like Tennessee, all Dem Party merch is made by union shops. There’s a union bug somewhere on that shirt.

@Mnemosyne: Exploiting, like bush and 9/11? WMDs in Iraq? this type exploitation?
Well hell yes of course he is thats what smart intelligent politicians do, exploit the fuck-ups and stupidity of their opponents.that’s exactly what makes the whole thing so great, not only does Obama exploit the hatred and stupidity of these morons for political gain, he also rakes in campaign money off of their disgusting behavior,.
Exploitation is what made this the great country it is, exploitation of the native Americans, the black slaves, the poor immigrants from Europe. The system of free enterprise was built on the backs of the Sweatshops and 14hour, 7 days a week labor forces,Our history books tell us of the “Robber Baron Era” so why would we not expect our politicians to exploit the stupidity of their opponents?
