From a reader in Texas:
I found this beautiful ochre dachsund corgi mix in Austin, TX, standing in front of the middle school where I work, saying hi to all the students. She was so friendly and sociable (and in good shape) that she had to have been owned by someone. I took her to the vet, no chip, but I was able to take care of all her shots. I’ve posted ads, put up fliers, and even gone door to door in the surrounding neighborhoods to no avail. It’s possible she was abandoned since the middle school area is decently rural. We can’t keep her because of our two cats who have been in a constant state of freaking out ever since the dog came home with us, but we would love to find someone who can give her a great home.
She is ridiculously sweet, obedient, a little spazzy, but a nice dog, great with kids and other dogs. She’s fully trained, responds to commands and is just a great medium sized dog. Vet pegged her at around 4-8 years old, no major issues other than some less than stellar dental, all the other tests for bad things came back negative. If we can’t find a good home for her, we’re going to have to surrender her to a no-kill shelter, but we really would prefer to be able to find her a place ourselves.
If any of your readers are in the Austin, TX area and they want to adopt this really sweet dog [please let me know in the comments (personal info removed)]…I’m just doing what I can to find a home for this dog. She is very sweet and deserves one.
If you think you can help, make contact via the comments or email me and I will forward it to the reader.
Marcelo
I’m the reader in Texas who sent this in, I’ll be able to answer any questions about her here as well as coordinate contact info. Thanks so much for your time and for being such a great pet-friendly site!
(and yes, that is an audio cable being used as an impromptu leash – I teach filmmaking at the school and that was all I had at the time. She has since been outfitted appropriately) :)

When I got my pup, the cats freaked out too. One hid in the basement all day until the dog went to his kennel at night. I remember crying often in frustration thinking I’d have to get rid of the dog.
But…
Now that cat and the pup are good friends.
Not to discourage you from finding the pup a good home. But if that doesn’t work out, don’t lose hope on the home front.

I just want to thank you ever so much for your comment on mistermix’s wake up thread.

Good luck! Sounds like a wonderful dog.
This is how dogs wind up in the shelter for no fault of their own… and yet lots of people won’t adopt from a shelter because they think the animals have “issues”!
When it’s the humans who have the problems.
Marcelo
Thanks, gex. It’s not just the cats. We’re not in any financial place where we can take on the responsibility of a dog and all the long term care that that implies, and we live in a 515 sq ft 1 bedroom apartment. Even though Austin is an incredibly dog friendly city my wife’s and my schedules are really not conducive to the kind of hours a dog requires. Which is kinda why we have cats.
But it’s really good to know that if we do have to take her for some time that it’s not going to be an epic fail forever. Thank you!
Any other advice anyone wants to provide as to making sure this dog is happy while she’s with us would be much appreciated. She seems really clingy to me, which is adorable but difficult at times.

Ah! I have four dogs already and don’t really have room, but if the choice is me or the pound… I’m in Austin.
One thing you should think about is that Austin, as opposed to many other Texas cities, has a well developed network of rescue organizations. Also too, not all shelters are the same, if you decide to bring her to a shelter I’d suggest Town Lake (TLAC.)

CORGI!
Corgis are great dogs. The only thing to remember with them is that they are insanely food motivated. They’ll eat everything because their digestive tract has been stretched out relative to their body mass, so when a corgi (a corgi/dachsund mix would be no less susceptible) is ‘full’, they’ve really consumed about 2x as many calories as they need. You need to learn how to starve your corgi or else it’ll be fat as a wine cask.
That very minor issue aside, corgis come highly recommended. Smart and loyal, and completely ridiculous looking – can’t help but smile and feel good when you see them.

@Marcelo: Many thanks for doing what you can.
We co-evolved with these guys in a way that they *need* us. Sometimes I hate the way we handle that responsibility as a species. (Vick, etc)
Good luck to you all.

I’m in Austin. Unfortunately, I can’t take her because my two cats would freak out, but I’m linking this post on my FB to see if anyone I know here in town can take her.

We will be in Austin in 10 days and have been looking for another dog…

You might try contacting the DFW dachshund rescue folks. Perhaps someone on their mailing list might be interested?

Why not dump the cats at the shelter instead? Just a thought.

Beautiful dog. I am so tempted.
But just cannot have a dog right now, much as I would love to adopt this beautiful dog, and drive every mile to get there.
Marcelo: I will send you my contact info in the event her adoption falls through.
Plz keep us posted on pup’s forever home and progress.
Marcelo
Thanks everyone for your interest! It’s really nice to know that people are so kind and generous. We have a bunch of leads both within and outside of the BJ community, so things are looking up, but stay tuned – Elizabelle and Zoe J, let me know here if you decide anything. :)

@ranger3:
Your love of making spiteful remarks about cats makes me wonder what the fuck is wrong with you.
Zoe J

I live in Hutto. I’ve already got one huge spazzy dog, but my lease let’s me have two. If the others don’t work out, Ican take her.

I hope everything works out for her- what a cutie! We are trying to find a home for a very cute orange 5-6 month old kitten who we found living in our attic. He is such a sweetie, and deserves home where he can have lots of lap sitting time. We already have 2 rescue dogs and 4 rescue cats, and we just don’t have room for another furry friend. If anyone is in southern-central CA and needs a sweet furry friend, let me know.
marybdvm
Go ahead and keep her, the cats are only temporarily freaked out-they’ll coe around.
On the other hand, if you’ll take 4 of my 6 cats I’ll add your dog to my little herd of 2.

As someone who has a Corgi/Basenji mix, I’d LOVE TO HAVE THIS DOG … if I wasn’t in KC.
But, if there’s no other option that pans out, please send me an email (tke919 at that place of Yahoo) and I’ll figure something out.
(She sits just like our Ms. Karma Wigglebottoms — who is solid black — and the face is the same as well.)
