Somehow I have lost the ability to use the ’embed’ function on YouTube… I can still load a clip and watch it, no problem, but when I hit the ‘Share’ button my machine goes into the Infinite White Screen of Nothingness. I’m using Firefox 3.xx, and I’m guessing some subroutine has corrupted itself / been trojaned?
Do any of you tech wizards have a solution other than ‘purge your hard drive and reload everything’ and / or ‘add more memory’?

Can you try another browser?
PeakVT
You forgot, “Buy a Mac.”
ETA: Try emptying the cache (advanced tab/network sub-tab in the Options); next is rebooting; then uninstalling/reinstalling the plugin.

Firefox has been failing on the YouTube for me today, too. I’ve had to switch to Safari when it’s usually the other way around.
Worked fine this morning, when I came in drunk and decided I had to search out YouTubes of Fauré’s Requiem.
But I’m on a rather creaky Mac, so who knows.

?Who cares what either of the two morons do?
I sure as hell don’t.

Update to the latest Firefox: 4.0.1

I second the browser suggestion, will it work using IE? Some videos I can’t view with firefox will play on IE.

I’m in desperate need of someone to rescue a great Border Collie, a three year old female, her name is Elliot and she’s a super terrific dog who needs a new loving home. She keeps picking fights with a female pit bull she lives with and she keeps losing those fights. Tonight for at least the third time in the last year she has picked a fight and has had to go to the ER Vets to get stitches. My friend can’t afford any more vet bills. And she’s not really a dog person.(The three dogs in her household are her daughters pets. She’s a cat person and they have 8 cats, also.) I’d take Elliot, but I already have two dogs and two cats. Everyone I know locally who loves dogs already has at least two.
We’re in Memphis, and I’d be willing to drive say 700 miles to deliver this dog to a good, loving home. Can anyone here help? She’s a super dog. She just seems to pick fights with other female dogs. She’s mostly white with some liver-colored spots and ears, and one nice gray/black eye. And she’s smart as a whip, mostly trained and mostly mellow. But she picks fights with the other female dog in her pack. She needs to be an only dog, or at least an only female.
Please Balloon Juice people, come through for this great dog, find her a new forever home. I know most of you are dog lovers.

Switch to Chrome. I started having oddball issues in Firefox and they all went away when I swapped over.

Yes; purge your hard drive and load something different. You might want to give Ubuntu a try, though you don’t actually have to do the purging the hard drive step in order to try it. Going to spend the rest of your life in a Buddhist Monastery in Nepal where there’s no internet access is always an option, too.

Mac or Windows? You probably just need to create a new Firefox profile. It’s pretty hard to screw up firefox permanently. If you can access the email I submitted with this comment, hit me up and I’ll be happy to help. It’s kind of what I do for a living.

@Spiffy McBang:
I’ll second this. I’ve been using Chrome for a couple of yrs. & have virtually no complaints.
Also had Firefox, but didn’t use it for much, then it started acting screwy, & stayed screwy even after removing & reinstalling it.

I think what I love most about this post is that it belittles the very people she’s asking for help, which I guess is bog-standard when it comes to people asking for tech support. “Hey, fruity, put down your d20 and make my computron do the interwebs.”
At any rate, I second the cache reset (#2.) Been having a few YouTube-related issues myself and clearing the browser cache (and cookies, while you’re at it) has been a panacea.

@DeeLoralei: I can’t help, sorry. Maybe Anne Laurie can be persuaded to re-post your request during the day, if she hasn’t cut herself off by throwing her computer through a window in frustration.

I’d say just upgrade to the unbugged most current version of Firefox.
then:
ToolsMenu>Options>Advanced>UpdateTab>Click the :
Automatically download and install the update then hit OK

make sure to repost this in the pet threads, sadly I can’t help…

I’m using Firefox 3.6.17, and I don’t think it’s your browser. Forgive me if I’m not getting your problem, but if using the “embed” is it, YouTube changed this a little while ago. Right click inside the video and when the menu comes up, choose “copy embed html”.
Hope this is what you were looking for.
mem from somerville
Youtube has recently done something goofy with their “embed” code. If you open and look, it now looks short with some “iframe” stuff in it.
However, this borks most people’s browsers and embedding.I don’t know who it works for.
You need to go under the code line, and click the box that says: “Use old embed code”
That generates the style that works on my blogging platforms anyway.
It’s not a Mac issue.
wolfkin
This is a wordpress blog? you’re trying to embed the video here right? why not try to get a YT plugin maybe make it easier on yourself?
You find a good plugin and it will work no matter how they change their code.. matter of fact even the old embed code should work if you change the YT string.. but that’s all technical jibber jabber to say if you use a plugin it shouldn’t stop no matter what YT does to change it’s embed.
if that fails hit me up on twitter and i’ll see if there’s anything else.

well that’s not entirely fair. Many people doing ‘support’ tend to have no patience and little willingness to suggest anything but a nuke for the fly problem. It’s like going on IRC. IRCOps are like Nazi’s in some channels.

Google Chrome. Used to love Firefox but hate the new v4. IE is garbage and just gets worse with each new version.
Love love love Chrome. Very snappy and light weight and just works. Easy to set up the options.
percysowner
@Fred: I’ve looked at Chrome and sadly many of the addons that I rely on in Firefox are not available for Chrome. I hate Firefox 4 as well, so I just downgraded back to 3.17.

@Fred:
Use what works for you.
All of the browsers have some issues and strengths.
I don’t use Chrome all that often, think my initial discovery that it uses heavy weight processes rather than threads put me off.
Firefox v4 has some nice User Interface stuff; still has issues with bad js and memory leaks in general.
Safari also has some memory leak issues and seems slower to me.
Opera works pretty well… I think I use Firefox over Opera mainly for the UI.
I use IE for work. IE 9 did some work to handle video on graphics cards that is good stuff and hasn’t made its way into all of the other browsers. I don’t like the UI though, and it isn’t available for my primary home machine.
