Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let there be snark.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Come on, man.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

The words do not have to be perfect.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

No one could have predicted…

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

T R E 4 5 O N

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

You can’t love your country only when you win.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

It’s so miserably humid here I’m sort of just lifelessly flopping around. May make a mojito to cool me down.

The previous threads on memorial day, as usual send me on a nostalgic stroll through the insane Vietnam Era, and my place in it. And what it was like being coerced into the US Military during the late stages of that war. Needless to say, I didn’t know shit from apple butter, but Alice Cooper summed it up pretty well with this song.

I’m only marginally less confused than I was then, but I don’t abuse my body near as much as then.

Very nice day here today. And what is this thing “humidity” you speak of?

And the best documentary ever on Vietnam, as far as soldiers themselves telling their own stories is on You Tube. Dear America – Letters Home From Vietnam. For anyone interested.

Sitting in the a/c with the shades drawn. Miserable Season is upon us.

It’s been so incredibly dry here, all the trees and plants are suffering. I saw a massive pecan limb down across someone’s driveway while on my morning walk today. I know pecans shed branches, but this thing was huge, and it had clearly just fallen off the tree, scraping the trunk on the way down.

I think the people who live in the house aren’t home. They aren’t going to be able to get their car in or out of their garage and there’s no way they can move the limb on their own. They were lucky it didn’t take out the garage.

This drought is brutal. A lot of trees are dying or at least parts of them are. That means we’ll get a tropical storm or hurricane to compensate for the lack of rainfall. Great.

The day started humid in NYC and I’ve had the living room A/C on all day. I’ve been watching TV, reading, and playing Bounce Out on the computer.

ETA: NYC had a rain storm around 0400, the rest of the day has been sunny… along with the humid.

Dogsitting for a friend for about ten days. Will the two dogs eventually figure it out and coordinate how they walk on the leash or are they gonna keep deciding to go in opposite directions and then randomly switch sides?

@PurpleGirl: Did the nasty thunderstorms this morning make it to NYC? I am in Jersey and was awakened about 6 am by both dogs freaking out and trying to crawl inside my skin. Not so bad for my Ellie. She is about 30 lbs. But my friend’s dog is a 75 lb lab mix

Had to be at work all day today. Bleh.

Left work when a metal piece I had spent the last three days machining (out of pure copper…double bleh) had an unfortunate encounter with a milling machine on the very last machining step and got all twisted and warped. Triple bleh. Back to square one.

Guess it was a message from the machining gods not to work on a holiday.

Two items about Our Liberal Media caught my eye today
    1) CNN called Palin’s but trip “Historic”.

    2) David Gregory made Chris Wallace look like Walter Cronkite yesterday:

GREGORY: So, Ruth Marcus, what wins here: bold leadership on Medicare and the argument that the Democrats won’t do something courageous, or the Democrats who say, “Hey, those guys want to take away my Medicare”?

Did anybody see this? Did it sound as blatant as absurd as it reads? Without even getting into the notion that Ruth Marcus and Harold Ford were there to provide the ‘liberal’ perspective.

I decided as long as I was going to be sweating in 90 degree 55% hum weather I might as well get some work done. Cleaned a bushel of spruce needles out of 50 feet of guttering. That’s one corner of one floor of a large house.

Since this is an open thread, it seems like a good place to post this. I heard an ad for this on my local AM radio station during one of the wingnut talkers. It’s called Freedom Connector, and it’s sponsored by Freedomworks. (WARNING! That’s a Freedom Works link!)

The radio commercial was hilarious. A bunch of people saying how fantastic it was using FreedomConnector to “get more freedom.” And indeed that’s one of the rotating slogans at the top of the page: “Find more freedom — right in your own backyard!”

There’s a giant map with locations of other Freedomly minded people and groups, and above it the slogan reads: “Connect to the nation-wide freedom movement.”

The whole thing, from the radio ad to the online crap is just hilariously awful. If someone were creating a parody of wingnut Facebook, they couldn’t do a better job.

Tressel’s problems started when he passed on information to Pryor’s ‘mentor’ via email about the sting and didn’t inform the university or the NCAA. Maybe so he could protect the players, maybe so he could keep the players eligible for a big game. At 9:00 pm it’s still 83 degrees & muggy. Mrs. InD is out walking Doglius because if there’s an opportunity for smells and adventure he doesn’t give a damn about the heat. Maybe he’ll be tired and quiet for the rest of the evening.
He and I were outdoors this afternoon and I was bored so I was talking earnestly to him about a bush I was trimming. I was really into it and suddenly he ran up to this attractive woman who was, like, 4 feet behind me walking by on the sidewalk. While I talked animatedly to a dog and clipped a yew.
At that point there is no way to signal to a stranger I am not a Crazy Old Man.

@Amir_Khalid: It’s amazing what they can do with cosmetic dentistry. My son had to have similar work done and he has a lovely smile now. It’s not fun, but you’ll like the results.

I’m celebrating Memorial Day by listening to President Obama honor those he sent to their deaths, as well as those he honors by making perfectly rational exceptionalist excuses for their killing of innocent, unexceptional civilian women, children, and men.

La Nina here on the left coast. 58 degrees and showers every damn day since last November. Let me ask you, you east coasters complain that there’s no global warming because you keep having hard winters, do you guys go the opposite direction when it’s 95 degrees and 95% humidity in May? Do people say, “oh my god, global warming is so true!” Because we left coasters tend to keep an even keel about these things.

It must be satisfying to so steadfastly uphold a standard under which all 44 Presidents of the United States are, categorically and by necessity, war criminals. I don’t think I’d have the energy for it.

How does one build up their sanctimony muscles, anyway? Taking a dump in the middle of the living room and sticking your own nose in it for hours to grow accustomed to the fragrance?

    @Uncle Clarence Thomas:

You mean the wars that your boys Bush and Cheney started for no good reason, and that Obama is trying to find a way out of?

To paraphrase Brad DeLong, “why oh why can’t we have a better troll corps?”
