Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

I really should read my own blog.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

The revolution will be supervised.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Let there be snark.

I was promised a recession.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

I think we need to spend some time talking about new blogs we have found lately that are worth a look. I’m so caught up in my own bullshit that I haven’t explored as much and am kind of in a rut/routine as to what I read and check, so if you have a blog you think is worth checking out, or if you know of one we should be reading, through it in the links here so we can give it a test drive.

Also, I’d like to make an ActBlue page for the Wisconsin recall. Do we know who the candidates are? I sure as hell don’t. Names would be useful.

I just stumbled across this very interesting blog run by someone named Andrew Something-or-other. He’s got some intriguing ideas and I wish he had a newsletter to which I could subscribe. I used to think Mark Halperin and Ann Althouse were IT as far as star bloggers were concerned, but this Andrew person seems so thoughtful and reasonable that I’m not sure anymore.

I like Capital Gains and Games. Somebody here suggested it when I was asking for “intelligent, old-school conservative blogs.” I don’t really see the conservatism here as much as objectivity. And I’m sure 100 people will flame me for paying them that compliment, but the posters here seem to be realists to me.

I like science blogs. Here’s two fun ones:

Bad Astronomy – Mostly science with a mild humor twist. Also a skeptic blog. We need more skepticism!

Pharyngula – Used to be more science. Mostly pro-atheism/evolution these days – and/or attacks on the Wingnuttery.

Time has what I assume is a short-term blog “Officer X” by an anonymous Airforce officer of some kind who’s gay; he’s reporting behind-the-lines about how the DADT repeal is going. A nice first-person account.

But when I had to take a 10% paycut all extra stuff got put on hold. Content for non-subscription isn’t very good. But if you are a stat geek and can afford it, I loved the articles. Besides Nate Silver was a founder (or something)… so politically it seems a little left leaning. :)

I don’t really read many political blogs, except when I am going nutpicking, because otherwise I begin to despair.

One of my favorite distractions is Flagrante Delicia, a sweet little Portuguese lady who makes truly wonderful desserts – English version for recipes, more expansive Portuguese version for pure cake porn.

I also love Flikfilosopher – good movie reviews and scads of yummy Doctor Who geek-girliness.

For food not politics, I added a handful of blogs to my RSS feed from Saveur’s best food blog awards, but it’s too early to tell which of them will stay on the feed. The good thing about food blogs is that they don’t update so often that it’s hard to keep track of them, but the bad thing about food blogs is that they update so seldom it’s hard to evaluate them.

When intel-dump went defunct a 2nd time, the commenters started http://milpubblog.blogspot.com/. FDChief was one of the best sages there and he’s like John, but less snark and always right. I’ve never, ever disagreed with the guy on anything, and he’s a great writer. Stuff like this:

Every single fucking human being needs to have it driven into his or her forehead with a steel nail that every single day in every single war some person dies a stupid, meaningless death that snuffs out the world in a moment. That those empty eyes zipped inside a bag or covered by a bloody blanket were the windows to an entire universe, once.
    __
That the price we pay for forging our national will is paid in the unlived futures of those we kill and those of us who die to make it so.

Has a series of decisive battles of history and often the observations have a very current theme. Give him some love.

This may be an ignorant question but do they even have senate candidates in Wisconsin yet? Isn’t the recall vote a separate thing that has to come first?

I haven’t heard anyone talk about running FOR these seats, just recalling the assholes currently occupying them.

Even if it’s unofficial, it might behoove the WI state Democratic party to wink-wink-nudge-nudge the names of potential candidates for the soon-to-be vacated senate seats.

You can’t beat someone with no one. You can beat no one with no one, but it’s easier to beat no one with someone.

    Or something.

    @Southern Beale:

In Wisconsin, the format is that the recall election is actually more like a do-over. So the 6 Senate Republicans will each have an opponent; if they get more votes, they’re retained, and if not, they’re dumped and the opponent takes over.

Not a blog but a forum of like minded individuals who evicerate the “birfers” on a daily basis. They follow their cases and their blogs and forums and debunk every last thing they ever post. A really smart bunch of lawyers and other sundry types (like me) who dedicate an inordinate amount of time to make sure that “falsehoods unchallenged only fester and grow” are challenged every day.

Warning sometimes the lawyers get into an argument about a nuance of the law, it is fascinating, albeit confusing sometimes. At times like that I go to the funnies section!

He was swearing up and down about the state Government Accountability Board scheduling the Republican recalls earlier than the Democratic ones. Of course, he was conveniently ignoring that they recall schedule is set by when the challenges are certified. The GAB has certified all the petitions against the Republican senators, but the ones against the Democrats are still underway (and the GAB is seeking to delay the 6/3 deadline to certify due to the wide range of challenges and protests files against the Democratic Senator recall efforts). They’re trying desperately to spin their little conspiracy theories because they know they’re fucked.

Here comes some shameless self promotion:

I just started writing a blog and would love some Balloon-Juice traffic. If anyone wants to check it out it’s at exleywartime.blogspot.com.

For the Wisconsin recalls, Dane101 has a handy list of names, Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, and websites, which they update as new info becomes available.

The challengers are all pretty good. Jen Shilling, Fred Clark, and Sandy Pasch are all current Assembly reps.; Jessica King is Deputy Mayor of Oshkosh and lost to Hopper by under 200 votes last time around; Shelley Moore is a teacher and very active in her community; Nancy Nussbaum served as Brown County executive and has been a mayor and worked in the state Justice Dept.

Keeping with the Wisconsin theme, I’ve been rather enjoying The Paul Ryan Watch, a group blog by DownWithTyranny and a bunch of folks from the Cheddarsphere.

And speaking of Paul Ryan, perhaps some coin could go to his challenger, Rob Zerban? Unlike Ryan’s previous opponents, Zerban seems to actually have a shot; the national party actually mentioned him last week in the wake of NY26, so there may be some support for the Democratic challenger for once.

Had a momentary freakout when I saw the name Shelley Moore; there’s a Congresscretin from West Virginia named Shelly Moore Capito (daughter of former Gov Arch Moore, who I think Mel Brooks had in mind when he created Governor LePetomane).

My friend and I have a blog that is a couple of months old. We cover current events, from the serious to stupid shit that needs to be held up and ridiculed.

There’s even a handy link to balloonjuice for use in case of emergency.

I like The Files of Nefarious Newt for thoughtful, compassionate posts about the human condition framed by current events.

Also, Eclectablog, for coverage of happenings in Michigan. He also sends care packages to vets through Netroots for the Troops. You all should head to his blog now and send your condolences along. He just lost one of his beloved dogs, Hara.

    . . . rut/routine as to what I read and check, . . .

Tomdispatch has been around for almost ten years, so it’s certainly not a new blog, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen the FP’ers here link to it.
The intros and articles have many good background links, since the articles tend to be analysis, links which help me catch up on news I’ve missed or news I’ve forgotten. There may be two or three days between new posts, so I check weekly.
Tomdispatch is where I first read articles by the late Chalmers Johnson, among many other fine writers.

I was going to suggest Tomdispatch as well but Planicspoof beat me to it.

A blog similar in focus ro Tomdispatch is the Contrarian Progressive
It is a new blog that I started a month ago and deals with Middle East, Europe and International events. It is not about snark or pithy reactions to media pieces but rather it presents longish analyses of current events from a different perspective.

Late to this thread, and it isn’t new, but Playing for Change is too AWESOME to be missed.

From the site: “Musicians from all over the world are brought together to perform benefit concerts that build music and art schools in communities that are in need of inspiration and hope.”

Rollicking chunes and positive action. Inspiring.

@Maeby: True, that. We got the CD/DVD combination; gorgeous music, presented in a way that made me tear up.

For a few years now, I have been reading http://hammeroftheblogs.blogspot.com/. He’s an excellent writer, keen and perceptive, and delivers a heady mix of snark and insight. I check it out every day. Also: I don’t do sports, but now and then he writes about them. So, there’s that too.
