Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

…and a burning sense of injustice to juice the soul.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Can we lighten up on the doomsday scenarios?

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Donald Trump, welcome to your everything, everywhere, all at once.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

why isn’t aipac registered under the foreign agents registration act?

why aren’t members of the senate/house listed as lobbying agents for israel?

why does this one small country have such complete control over our government?

Look, these guys claimed Obama was going to force Bibi back to the 1967 boundaries with absolutely no conditions, modifiers, or any other verbiage whatsoever and this was TOTALLY NEW US policy when in fact it was not different in substance from anything the US has said for 40 fucking years.

So, as burnspqesq says, this is a surprise? That they’re maliciously rephrasing what Simon said?

    DING DING DING DING DING!

Bibi doesn’t want any peace process. He’s happy with the situation as it is. He’s willing to sacrifice a few Jewish lives (and a whole lot of Arab lives) to the inevitable terrorist attacks and the obligatory reprisals to maintain the status quo.

Jennifer Rubin is a tool. The real shame is The Washington Post’s, for employing her.

    It demeans them.

    From the linked article:

And I don’t know where Jennifer Rubin, the “Right Turn” columnist, is getting her info.

“Right Turn” is the same PAC that just released the “Give Me Your Cash, Bitch” attack ad against Janice Hahn. I think that may put some context into the discussion here.

Whiskey, I don’t think that the two are directly related. “Right Turn” is Pravda on the Potomac’s cute little name for its right-leaning columnists. The PAC is a pretty new thing put together (perhaps the name is inspired by the WaPo, who knows?) to get that one ad out, from what we know so far.

@Elizabelle At this point the only thing left for the WaPo to demean is the readers. Rubin is no different from Kraphammer and a whole line of other conservative opinion writers published by Hiatt.

Geez, the Stern Gang was active a long time ago.

For the record, I renounce Stalin, broccoli, and the Stern Gang. But I’m not an official body and I’m not even Jewish.

    However, consider this fact:
In the deepest part of the Holocaust, only the paranoid and violent assholes survived. Therefore many of the first settlers in Israel after WWII were indeed paranoid and violent assholes. And several of them were what we would today call terrorists.

The fact that the Palestinians, etc. didn’t have anything to do with the Holocaust doesn’t prevent this fact from being a factor.

Most of the survivors are gone now and it is time for their progeny and successors to move on and deal with issues in a more constructive manner.

ETA: Actually, I lied. I like broccoli. :-)

Usually you don’t find such physical beauty among DC dork/hacks. Usually women as beautiful as Jennifer Rubin go into modelling.

@Commenting at Balloon Juice since 1937:

Re #17, WTF? Is ZOA the new ZOG? The Stern Gang was, at least in part, a terrorist organization by any objective standard. The JDL was considered, even by Israel, to be a terrorist organization at one time but seems to have moved away from violence. Baruch Goldstein, a Jewish terrorist who murdered 29 Palestinas, was a charter member of JDL. Not as bad as Kahane Chai but still disgusting. I’m a Jew and have never heard of Etzel. Sheltered upbringing maybe.

Now of course, the process of surviving the holocaust might tend to make someone a bit traumatized, paranoid, willing to resort to violence. Might even make those zionist settlers a bit militant…

Linda’s formulation seems to assume a pre-holocaust criminality being associated with survivors, which is historically ludicrous and wanders into some well-established antisemitic propaganda (survivors = Israelis = Kapos). I will assume that is not where she meant to go, but sheesh! Sometimes it is dicey to go into these discussions for good reason.

Do Palestinians ever need to know that *their* basic security needs will be met?

I do think the Israeli government will indeed eventually sign a peace agreement with recognition of a Palestinian state.

But only after they take every single thing they might want from the West Bank and Jerusalem, every bit of land (lots of arable land there for the taking!), every resource (water’s great!), every block, every site.

And after they criss-cross the West Bank with so many roads and walls and settlements and so forth that the Palestinian state created is an absolute joke — which everyone especially the US will pronounce as ‘viable’ and which Pal’s get to agree or go fuck themselves. The Pal’s still won’t control their borders or airspace, though maybe the former will be someone else’s troops doing what Israel (maybe via the US) says.

Once that’s done, they’ll be more than happy to leave the Pal’s with their husk, and then we all get to blame them for failing to make themselves into a great country since they now have the chance and all we’ve given them.

Plus it’ll be a great time for the rest of the region to stop pretending they care about the Pal’s and the conflict.

And it in no way will be limited to Netanyahu and “Likud,” just like it never has been, outside “Oslo” type offers that if only the Palestinians “negotiators” give up such an insane amount as a precursor that the population would simply revolt. Just like settlements have accelerated under Labor gov’ts more than Likud. Just like the leveling of Gaza was under Kadima. Oh, I did forget the pullot from that shit-hell-hole Gaza — oh, man, did the Israelis so mind losing that little crap strip.

so jennifer rubin pivots from what she can retreat to defend as inarguably legitimate concerns, to her particular hyper-agenda, and dares people to attack her for the pivot, when they do, they get rebutted with the legitimate concern part, hoping the absurd pivot will be ignored because of her capacity to express outrage, albeit misdirected and one-off the actual concern expressed.

I disagree. By the time Israel has expanded all the settlements, grabbed all the water, built all the roads, and taken all the land, their national outlook will have become so distorted that they will be unable to give the remnants over to the Palestinians. By that point, giving up even the smallest, most worthless piece of anything will be looked upon as ‘losing’ and they will be unable to do so.

Israel needs to get their shit together now, or in less than 50 years, they’ll no longer exist as Jewish Democracy. It’ll be one or the other, but not both.
