As I’ve said before, there’s some pretty cool Republicans in the Empire State (via):
Sen. Roy McDonald (R-Saratoga) – in a dramatic reversal from his earlier opposition – became the second GOPer in as many days to give his blessing to same-sex nuptials, bringing Senate support to 31 votes.
[….]“You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, f— it, I don’t care what you think. I’m trying to do the right thing.”
Reminds me a little bit of the great George Michaels (not that one).

They should deny him communion.

Not being a “Daily News” reader I’m depriving myself of great comments like this:

Good stuff!

Good on him. Don’t need him to switch parties or anything like that, just need him to do the right thing, and apparently he will.

@trollhattan:
oh noes! autistic gays!

somebody needs to reread the bible.

wow. that’s a really big (and rural) district. “Saratoga” doesn’t really do it justice. it stretches from Glens Falls to Saratoga, to Troy and far south of Albany, and from Schenectady to the MA/CT borders.
in other words… my homeland!
good for him. and for the foothills for having a decent State Sen.

@chopper:
I took an English Class, “The Bible as Literature”, here at U of M a few years ago, taught by Ralph Williams, a gay Canadian.
It was about a bajillion times better than any church, ever.

I always like it when someone uses the “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve” argument unironically. But I’m sure he’s not homophobic, he’s just “homoskeptic” like fellow “Adam and Steve” arguer Alan Partridge.

Five bucks says the writer thinks “autistic” means “artistic,” and he’s agin that, too.
Good for old McDonald. That is a really nice story for a stressful Friday afternoon.

Martin Luther figured this out hundreds of years ago and inspired an entire movement with his revelation. Churches don’t exist to encourage reading the bible. They exist to obscure it. :-p

Penguins ain’t natural! They was chemically man-made like the Incredible Hulk!
It’s in the Bible.

Stories like this make me think there’s hope for the GOP yet. If instances of sanity and righteousness persist here and there on the local level, maybe someday it will work its way back up to the national level.

trollhattan: Correct me if I’m wrong, I’m just a fat dumb atheist, but I thought Jesus paid the price for all our sins so precisely such a thing would never happen again.
What motivates people like this is a hatred so profound for their fellow human beings that the only thing that stops them from mass murder is a fear of the consequences.
Comrade Luke
Love what he said, but his career is pretty much over, amirite?
Mike Kay (True Grit)
speaking of new york pols, even more photos of weiner’s junk emerged today. Some 35 year lady from georgia made a splash this morning on the Today Show.
This is why Nancy pushed him out. When you have infotainment organizations beating the bushes (no pun intended) and paying people for photos, the drip, drip, drip was never gonna stop.

I wish the reply button hadn’t gone AWOL, because I want to tell you that you’re completely wrong, but now nobody will ever know who “you” is.

Seems support for equal marriage has reached the tipping point because enough people finally view it as a fundamental issue of fairness. People start to react as small children do–stripping away the layers of rationalization and justification for bias and oppression, viewing things through the simple lens of “treating all kids equally = good.” Imagine what we could accomplish if we could get enough people to see economic, environmental, educational, healthcare, etc. issues in those terms.

Kind of like your obsession with Weiner and your need to bring him into every single thread, relevant or not. Something tells me you’ll still be doing this weeks from now.

Wait, that’s a potty mouth in NY? Shit, when I lived there, telling the Aristocrats joke during church wouldn’t even have qualified for that label.

How about a road trip to Jumping Jacks in Scotia for fried clam rolls and onion rings?

@shortstop: Don’t be upset, I’m sure AIPAC will find someone to replace Weiner as their propaganda arm.

Do your comments ever have anything to do with the people you’re addressing, or is your text box just a little BJ Magic Eight Ball that sends totally random phrases floating up?

OK, who put their quarter in Mike Kay? How many times is it going to take for you people to learn? He has only one song!

Mike Kay (whatever) the real issue is a fairly low class of strumpet on the internets and twatters, these days. A good set of european bawds would know how to avoid being shitty fame chasers and media hounds. These american starfuckers, not so much. Every famous guy needs to understand that virtual dick is as much trouble as the real thing. Make sure you know who you’re sending it to.
Zifnab
It’s hilarious, because I’m sure Kay will be back here some time next week on an Israel / Palestine thread screaming “WHAY DO YOO HAT TEH JOOOS!”
Besides, everyone knows Lieberman is AIPAC’s top gun. Half the GOP follow up. There’s not a pro-Israel bill Weiner has ever voted for that Boehner wouldn’t have voted for twice given half a chance.
L. Ron Obama
This news is nice and all, but it’s two days old, and they’ve been stuck at 31 yes votes since Wednesday.

Is it true that Andrew Breitbart has syphilis?
The claim is out there, so by modern media rules it Must Be Reported. And he hasn’t publicly denied it, so it is likely he has something to hide.

@Just Some Fuckhead:

Mike Kay (True Grit)
@slag: thanks for the quarter, it allows me to play it again. lemme see, over at DKos, where even though they’re holding their vaunted yearly convention, they found time to post 10 diaries today (so far) and another 38 diaries yesterday on weiner. That’s 48 in the 30 hrs since he resigned. yet, I’ve gone to far by noting today’s peep show, which is all over the place. Congrats. Anthony would be proud of you.
Mike Kay (True Grit)
@Zifnab: sorry to break it to you, but according to St. Glenn, “[Weiner] is one of the most extremist AIPAC loyalists in the Congress, which is not an easy distinction to achieve.” Now, you’re not going to tell me St. Glenn is wrong?

I worked with a woman who said it wasn’t important if she flossed her teeth because Jesus was going to come for her and her family before gum disease became a problem. She was only half-joking.
I always wonder if people who feel like this die filled with disappointment that Jesus never showed up to get them in their lifetime. Jesus let them down bigtime.
Dennis SGMM
Have you considered that few here really give a flying fuck about the current topics of DKos diarists? When are you going to start updating us on the latest hyperventilations from HuffPo? How about the wit and wisdom of Jane Hamsher?

Don’t feed the troll sweet potato fries, lest they return for more.

Mike Kay (True Grit)
@Zifnab: I don’t know if your post is a sad and sorry demonstration in laziness or denial. Probably both.
Surely you’ve been around long enough to know all you have to do is pop the quotation into qoogle
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22he+is+one+of+the+most+extremist+AIPAC+loyalists+in+the+Congress%2C+which+is+not+an+easy+distinction+to+achieve.%22&hl=en&num=10&lr=&ft=i&cr=&safe=images&tbs=
and glenn’s column from salon, with the quotation in black, comes up as the 3rd listed link.
Seriously, you’re weak tea.

Let me just say, the post subject matter combined with the Google ads makes for some … interesting sidebars just now.

@Tonal Crow: LOL! I was gonna add a warning: Do not attempt to correct your picture, the orange is real.

I’m no biblical scholar, by any means, but wasn’t the great crime of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah that they were inhospitable towards strangers?

@L. Ron Obama:
This. Well, a modified “This”.
This guy stood up and did the right thing, and deserves to be recognized for it. Two days late is better than never.
On the other hand, I’ve known that the good guys were looking for the last GOPer they needed in the NY State Senate to bring them over the top, and from your contextless story – you’re not saying this post was about the penultimate vote, and not saying another was needed – I thought this guy must be the one, that they’d finally found one more NY State Senator with some pangs of conscience. See, I don’t remember offhand whether it’s 31 or 32 that are needed, and since I knew one more was needed, and you were posting about one more having been found, I drew the obvious (but wrong) conclusion.
Roger Moore
@Villago Delenda Est:
Actually, the exact evil for which Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed is never specified. They want to rape the angels disguised as men God sends to the city (which could be interpreted as evil for teh ghey, mistreatment of visitors, or both) but he already had his eye on them; the angels had been sent to investigate the evil behavior in the city in the first place.
The Old Testament tends to be extremely terse that way. It often talks about stuff very generically without spelling out the details. It’s full of a lot of what and not nearly as much why.
Neil H
The hold-up in the Senate isn’t down to lack of votes, but down to whether the Senate majority leader is going to even bring the bill to the Senate floor. The line from Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (a Republican) is that he will only do this if the Republican caucus as a whole agrees that it should be brought to the floor for a vote. The Republican caucus has been meeting for two days now, and stil hasn’t come up with an answer. I wonder if they ever will, as in my experience anti-gay politicians will never take “yes” for an answer when it comes to gay marriage, and will do most anything to prevent it happening, democratic process be damned.
And of course, killing the gay marriage bill in caucus would be an effective way of stopping the bill without actually having to be individually identified as having killed the bill. Not that I can be certain that this is the goal if course, but still…
Mike Kay (True Grit)
@Neil H: the senate adjourns for the summer Monday nite. So if it doesn’t happen Monday, then it gets pushed back until at least until September.
James E. Powell
So if you are a Republican and you and your party have been using Teh Gay to rouse the hoard of bigots who will turn out for you, what’s your play here? Give up on an issue that you are losing over time? Stick to your guns and keep the issue alive for 2012 when you are going to need every voter you can get? I am betting that the Repubicans let this bill die in their caucus. I’d be shocked if they do anything else.
Also too, Republicans voting for same-sex marriage becomes a national story. While this issue may be a dead-ender in New York state, I am guessing it’s still hot stuff in red parts of the midwest. Republicans in those states may pressure NY Republicans to help preserve the national brand.
Villago Delenda Est
Which is just fine if you’re being a mindless drone. Which seems to suit fundigelicals well.
Tsukune
My state senator, a rare Republican with a clue on marriage. Of course, before McDonald, we had Joe Bruno, who may find a way to skate on his ethics conviction. Bah.
Now if we can only get my Democrat state assemblyman to not be a leading opponent of MMA (calling it barbaric) while supporting boxing at the same time.
