Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

So very ready.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Stand up, dammit!

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

Potty-mouthed State Senator destroys sanctity of marriage

As I’ve said before, there’s some pretty cool Republicans in the Empire State (via):

Sen. Roy McDonald (R-Saratoga) – in a dramatic reversal from his earlier opposition – became the second GOPer in as many days to give his blessing to same-sex nuptials, bringing Senate support to 31 votes.

[….]

“You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, f— it, I don’t care what you think. I’m trying to do the right thing.”

Reminds me a little bit of the great George Michaels (not that one).

Not being a “Daily News” reader I’m depriving myself of great comments like this:

just like in bible times in sodom and gomorrah from the little to the eldest all of them would practice homosexuallity until one day God brought those cities to destruction, that is exactly what will soon happen if all these homos and lesbians dont repent will be swept away with the broom of anihilation, i am just saying what the bible says. in lots days there ocurred a deluge of fire and sulphur, soon the destruction will be even greater than that. In the first place in the beginning God created Adam and Eve no adam and steve, God told them to produce offspring and fill the earth but they would not obey that is the reason why this world is sooooo messed up, but soon good will straight things up.

    Aaaand

What’s next>> AUTISM in 50 years recognized as NORMAL because of the increasing numbers?? We must correct and find answers as to causes, cures, and acknowledge TRUTH. LEGALIZATION of a LIE does not benefit ANYONE and lowers the intellect of its society! .

wow. that’s a really big (and rural) district. “Saratoga” doesn’t really do it justice. it stretches from Glens Falls to Saratoga, to Troy and far south of Albany, and from Schenectady to the MA/CT borders.

Seems support for equal marriage has reached the tipping point because enough people finally view it as a fundamental issue of fairness. People start to react as small children do–stripping away the layers of rationalization and justification for bias and oppression, viewing things through the simple lens of “treating all kids equally = good.” Imagine what we could accomplish if we could get enough people to see economic, environmental, educational, healthcare, etc. issues in those terms.

I worked with a woman who said it wasn’t important if she flossed her teeth because Jesus was going to come for her and her family before gum disease became a problem. She was only half-joking.

    This. Well, a modified “This”.
This guy stood up and did the right thing, and deserves to be recognized for it. Two days late is better than never.

On the other hand, I’ve known that the good guys were looking for the last GOPer they needed in the NY State Senate to bring them over the top, and from your contextless story – you’re not saying this post was about the penultimate vote, and not saying another was needed – I thought this guy must be the one, that they’d finally found one more NY State Senator with some pangs of conscience. See, I don’t remember offhand whether it’s 31 or 32 that are needed, and since I knew one more was needed, and you were posting about one more having been found, I drew the obvious (but wrong) conclusion.

    June 17, 2011 at 8:46 pm

    @Villago Delenda Est:
Actually, the exact evil for which Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed is never specified. They want to rape the angels disguised as men God sends to the city (which could be interpreted as evil for teh ghey, mistreatment of visitors, or both) but he already had his eye on them; the angels had been sent to investigate the evil behavior in the city in the first place.

The Old Testament tends to be extremely terse that way. It often talks about stuff very generically without spelling out the details. It’s full of a lot of what and not nearly as much why.

The hold-up in the Senate isn’t down to lack of votes, but down to whether the Senate majority leader is going to even bring the bill to the Senate floor. The line from Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (a Republican) is that he will only do this if the Republican caucus as a whole agrees that it should be brought to the floor for a vote. The Republican caucus has been meeting for two days now, and stil hasn’t come up with an answer. I wonder if they ever will, as in my experience anti-gay politicians will never take “yes” for an answer when it comes to gay marriage, and will do most anything to prevent it happening, democratic process be damned.

And of course, killing the gay marriage bill in caucus would be an effective way of stopping the bill without actually having to be individually identified as having killed the bill. Not that I can be certain that this is the goal if course, but still…

the senate adjourns for the summer Monday nite. So if it doesn’t happen Monday, then it gets pushed back until at least until September.

So if you are a Republican and you and your party have been using Teh Gay to rouse the hoard of bigots who will turn out for you, what’s your play here? Give up on an issue that you are losing over time? Stick to your guns and keep the issue alive for 2012 when you are going to need every voter you can get? I am betting that the Repubicans let this bill die in their caucus. I’d be shocked if they do anything else.

Also too, Republicans voting for same-sex marriage becomes a national story. While this issue may be a dead-ender in New York state, I am guessing it’s still hot stuff in red parts of the midwest. Republicans in those states may pressure NY Republicans to help preserve the national brand.
