Here’s a great Dan Savage speech about the complete failure of our media:
The relevant media part is the first two minutes before he goes into the crux of the “It gets Better” campaign.

So, folks around here pushed the Cubs and they did one of those “It Gets Better” vids.
Which I’m glad they did. Kids need that.
Now, when does it get better for Cubs fans?
When?

That sound you hear is 6 billion people laughing at you.
BGinCHI
Martin, I’m just waiting for the Tour de France. Baseball is dead to me. Even the Rugby World Cup this fall has a stronger pull.
Litlebritdifrnt
BGinCHI – I am positively salivating for the World Cup. England are really good this year and I am truly hoping for another win, and any time I get to watch Johnny Wilkerson kick a ball (even at 3am) is a good time.
Tonal Crow
@BGinCHI:
Never. You misunderstand what it means to be a Cubs fan.
Roger Moore
@BGinCHI:
How about never? Does never work for you? The Twelfth? The Twelfth of Never it is.
BGinCHI
I’m the St. Sebastian of this thread.

They have a pretty listless team this year, going nowhere. But some time in the near future they will have a dynamite team that will dominate in the playoffs but will somehow find the most heart breaking, mind shattering way to lose in the last game of the playoffs and fail to make the World Series. Again.
I’m not sure I can survive that. Again.
Elisabeth
Should I wonder why there is a “pray for Allan West” banner ad above this story?
scav
@Tonal Crow:
There’s my granddad’s team.
scav
@BGinCHI
And how, exactly, pray tell, does that differ from being a Cubs fan?

How are you guys going to watch the Rugby World Cup? Any idea who is carrying it? Are you watching it online? HOW? My household is mourning the loss of Setanta and not sure if we are going to be able to get the PPV package to watch the entire thing like last time. Any suggestions or thoughts would be welcome!
MikeJ
NBC.
Violet
Not all the matches? Really? Or is it going to be like the Olympics and be on USA and various other channels? Any idea if a PPV option for the whole thing is available? I searched on it several months ago and didn’t come up with anything.

So what’s the balance to Chicago sports teams talk? Maybe talk about the topic of this thread.
MikeJ
Violet, my guess, if forced to make one, is that they’ll spread it out among the cable properties, except maybe for a final. This guess isn’t rooted in facts or anything like that.
Much of it will be tape delayed though (they admitted that.)

To be recognized as a full metal wingnut and vanish forever from our political stage…

Violet, since NBC now owns Versus, I think that’s where a lot of games will be shown. They’ve just had a bunch of rugby on lately and I think they’re priming the pump.
Should be fun to watch.
And if Dan Savage drops in, sorry to have hijacked the thread for sports.

Butt sore, butt hurt, same thing.

MikeJ, Delayed is okay because of the time difference. Last time I just recorded everything on the DVR and watched the matches whenever it was convenient. Except for the bigger matches later on, which were on the weekend.
BGinCHI, I didn’t know Versus was showing it. From what I’ve heard the Rugby World Cup is going to be on Universal Sports, which my provider currently doesn’t carry. I think I’ll have to look into switching cable providers. Ugh.

@ BGinCHI
President Obama explains to Bill Murray when things will get better for cub fans at 1:50 of this video (if you can get past the 15 second commercial).
gex
This sucks.
buckyblue
Sorry, Chicago got Michael and now has Derrick Rose. The karma of it is they also get the Cubs. Green Bay got Favre and then Rodgers; but they (we) also get the Bucks, and until recently, the Brewers. But why does Chicago also get stuck with the Bears?? Jay Cutler, really???? Must be a zen thing here someplace.
Dollared
Nevermind the Cubs. I gave up in ’84 and moved to the Coast. Fucking Steve Garvey.
But can I just say that Dan Savage is absolutely, positively, one of my heroes?
A guy who is honest, brave, consistent and effective. And who is making the world a better place. Wow.
The “It gets better” thing is just one more thing he has done exceptionally well, just by being the same guy every day, and not worrying about all the crap our society produces.
How can we get more of him?

BGinCHI @ #3:
I have bad news for you, then. The Cubs are going to do really, really shitty in this year’s Tour. The course really doesn’t suit their strengths.
And to sort of stay on topic: Dollared at 24 is totally right. Dan Savage is fantastic.
Yutsano
I know he’s like totally happily married, and I am fully aware he reads this blog, but I don’t care. I’d fuck the living shit out of that man.
dollared
@Yutsano, I’ll just stick to being a fanboy. I’m also a happily married member of the Capitol Hill Breeders’ Association, and it’s not an open relationship :-)
Yutsano
I know a few of those. Nice folks. Decent dinner parties.
Neither is his, and I’m certain it causes him gentle bemusement to hear the strange sexual fantasies of a random fag in Seattle. It doesn’t change the fact I would ravish him into oblivion if I could. And then make him breakfast in the morning. In gay male circles, that’s called a serious relationship. :)
