Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Republicans would impeach Biden if he bit into a whole Kit Kat rather than breaking the sections apart.

He really is that stupid.

Fani Willis claps back at Trump chihuahua, Jim Jordan.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Oh come now, I’m sure the wingnut that was calling for the murder of Americans would never call for such a thing if there were fellow Republicans involved. But what are the chances that Republicans would be on a flotilla bringing emergency supplies to desperate non-white people? Somewhere below zero is my bet.

I’d pray for another Rabin if I wasn’t for damn certain that he’d be assassinated too, and we’d probably have our pols cheer if only to assure that Netanyahu’s fee-fee’s aren’t hurt.

A friend is supposed to be on the flotilla. She’s a teacher of non-violent response to conflict and she’s been working hard with other passengers to try to prepare them with how to respond to different situations — guns, stun grenades, tear gas, batons, etc. I’m really scared for her.

But I suppose I shouldn’t care if she gets hurt or killed because she’s just a piece of shit scumbag, according to RedState and other uber patriots. So that’s all right then.

Why is the US involved in this? To prevent Israel from being demolished by a group of unarmed civilians bobbing around on the Mediterranean? Or because by their actions, they are presenting the Other Side as being made up of humans that also have a point of view that needs to be considered?

I saw Trevinos bit over the weekend and was completely unshocked that a keyboard commando fantasizes having our own citizens killed for his amusement.

That Secretary Clinton says nearly the same, in a diplomatic way, is deplorable.

Why does she feel Israel needs to defend themselves from a peaceful protest outside their own borders/waters.

Really, some idiot tweets something like this and it’s worth a whole diatribe by Greenwald and mention on this blog? come on, this is not news, it’s nothing about nothing.

I also think people are reading more into HIllary’s statement then is there. She’s trying to avoid a repeat of what happened last time, that’s all.

If she wants to avoid a repeat of what happened last time then telling Israel that it can kiss US foreign aid goodbye if they kill or injure an American would work nicely too.

Who knows what kind of diplomacy is going on behind the scenes? I’m sure Israel is hearing from the U.S. (and we know they’re hearing warnings from other countries as well) to do everything they can to avoid confrontation. Hillary’s message was to American citizens.

Greenwald saw that idiotic tweet and wanted to make the comparison to Hillary even though there is no comparison.

There will be construction materials entering Gaza and we think that it’s not helpful for there to be flotillas that try to provoke actions by entering into Israeli waters and creating a situation in which the Israelis have the right to defend themselves.

Clinton doesn’t sound like she condones Israeli violence nearly so much as she simply anticipates it. It’s like saying “Don’t poke the bear with a stick and act surprised when it swipes at you.”

Greenwald’s “evil statesmen!” reading between the lines is getting a bit annoying. Really, “Clinton hopes Americans will die” is the kind of right-wing vomit I would expect out of Limbaugh or The Weekly Standard.

    June 28, 2011 at 6:07 pm

    @dedc79

I’m just weary of the US either condoning or ignoring whatever Israel chooses to do. To me, Hillary’s warning sounded more like “We have to let them shoot you so don’t go there.” If Israel wanted to arrest these people for violating her border that would be fine with me. Shooting someone for trespassing seems a bit beyond the pale. If an Arab nation was to act in the same way the drones would already be overhead.

Ok, so attempting to get past the IDF and reach Gaza is likely to result in being shot. That was already established. Duh.

The question is: should it? Do people attempting to get through automatically deserve to be shot, merely for attempting to go to Gaza? Does their purpose not matter?

They aren’t trying to cross Israeli waters. Israel doesn’t even say that. They say they are running a blockade on Gaza under the auspices of the San Remo legal regime. Even worse, they are probably technically correct (although their implementation of the blockade is cruel and petty). Liberals need to start distrusting international law. It wasn’t written by the weak, and it shows when you start looking under the surface.

I agree. No matter what flowery rhetoric it’s dressed up in, international law is just used as a cudgel by the preexisting power structure, and conveniently ignored in the rare case it would rightfully point back at them.

One quibble: this is true of any law.

@Maude: she pretty much damn well is, and in so many words. She is saying that Israel has a right to defend itself and that this right will be triggered by the flotilla. That implies that the Israeli’s will come charging in guns a-blazing just like last time and kill people.

What Ms. Clinton should be doing, in my opinion, is telling Israel to back the hell off.

What she is doing is serving notice to the flotilla, with an implied blessing.

I’ve been known to cuss out Glenn Greenwald about law. I’m sure this will come off as some sort of elitist snobbery about a profession that I’ve come to take much less seriously through my education in it. However, if you have even a little legal education, Glenn’s show looks bad. Like someone working a jury and hoping like hell that the opposing counsel is asleep. Like he is bullshitting the hoopleheads (and admittedly, it’s really all bullshit anyway, but he has the training and education to *know* that he is bullshitting). It’s not “he’s wrong”, it’s “he’s lying”.

The girl who died in 2003 when the Israelis knocked a house down on her, Rachel Corrie (I think it was in Gaza but might be wrong) has actually become a right wing punch line and not only her but her parents are openly mocked by Americans constantly. There was also another member of Corrie’s org (they’re called international solidarity movement) that was shot by an Israeli sniper (who was actually a Bedouin Arab and admitted in court he did it for no reason)and his govt Britain didn’t care.

I agree that maybe these kids weren’t exactly doing the smartest thing in the world, chaining themselves to houses set to be demolished and walking around a war zone during combat in an orange shirt like the British guy, but the fact that in the US they’re treated as the equivalent of John Lindh is pretty sad.

    June 28, 2011 at 10:24 pm

    @fuzz

It was Gaza and I had met Rachel Corrie. I used to live with another ISM Palestine member, he actually took so many rubber bullets and tear gas cans to the head that the ISM made him an example of what not to do and called him “action man”. As in “don’t be action man”. He was stubborn and refused any Israeli orders in the West Bank and Gaza, and he rented a car and got pissed at an incredibly stupid roadblock that stuck him on Palestinian roads with a five hour wait to deal with checkpoints and just veered over into the settler road and drove. A Merkeva tank attempted to kill him with a flechette round and he drove through a bunch of anti-tank entrenchment trying to avoid the killing. He sliced open the gas tank doing it, and the Rent-a-Car place he got the thing from in Israel is still trying to sue him.

I’m probably more pro-Israel than a lot of people on here but I have immense respect for the ism people, they have convictions and they’re willing to put their lives on the line for what they believe in, knowing very often that their own governments and countrymen think of them as traitors. It’s more than you can say for almost anyone that claims to be pro-Israel and more than you can say for almost anyone, period.
