The new Gillian Welch album “The Harrow And The Harvest” is spectacular. The songs are wonderful, of course, and David Rawlings is IMHO one of the all-time great guitar players.
Edit: Take into account that I’m a serious G. Welch fanboy.
Also, just wanted to mention I have a short story published through Smashwords heading to epub readers, hopefully in a week or so.

I had some reservations after I first saw it, but now I’ve decided Inception is my favorite movie of 2010. Three reasons. Hanz Zimmer’s score, the rolling hallway scene, and because Eames is totally gay and awesome. “You mustn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.” Perfect slogan for a sign at an equality rally.

Good thing you got an all purpose blog, currently sporting a mega gross factor decomposing body in a public swimming pool story, on top of an international lurid rape case, with developing plot twists and turns, complete with the always feral discussions on rape and the legal system.
And if you want to read something a little more cosmopolitan, check out ABL’s ace reporting on fart sweeteners and vaginal hygiene products. Not to leave out Cher’s formidable Gaydar.

Jeezus, did we not go through this last year? Get a couple of fans, one blowing air out and a couple blowing air in. Create a system. It works. Do it now. If it is a two story, put the one blowing out upstairs since you know hot air raises (I typed in hair.. haha luckily I corrected myself)
My audio thrill of the week, however, was stopping at a yard sale and scoring a seemingly unplayed copy of the original UK issue of “Electric Ladyland”. The sound quality is mighty fine.

Bite the bullet and have central air installed in your house. It’s a major investment, but it’s worth it. You and the pets will sleep better and feel better during the hot months.

This is the text of a resolution he drafted in 2009 calling on Obama to formally apologize to the Cambridge Police for his comments about their conduct during the Henry Louis Gates affair.
Is that “Electric Ladyland” the one with all the naked women on the cover? I’m not sure if that was a UK-only pressing, or US too.

I saw Super 8. I didn’t think it was that great-the plot was kind of derivative and I think there were a couple logic holes lying around-but mostly I’m glad that somebody’s trying to make summer movies that echo classic Spielberg instead of Michael Bay. And I thought the romance between the two main kids was cute.

One of the retired racing greyhounds my friends’ had hated fireworks and thunderstorms. She’d just shiver and shiver; the only thing we could do was to sit on the floor (or couch) with her and hold her, petting her until the noise was over. We figured that maybe she’d been in transit between tracks when a storm hit and no one was there to calm her down. She’d stand in the living room, shaking and shivering and we felt so sorry for her.

Our rescue Zevon, who decided he hated thunder (& fireworks) some 18 months after coming to live with us, will choose to spend some portion of this weekend in his crate with a towel draped over it. Because if the Noise Monsters can’t see you, obviously they can’t catch you.
I tried the ever-popular blanket-burrito trick, and even an expensive ‘anxiety wrap’ shirt, but it’s the dark den that keeps Zevon less-unhapppy. He’s free to go in & out — we don’t latch the crate, just drape the towel over the door.
Which reminds me, sometime this weekend we have to tack the blanket back up over the bedroom door, so the dogs can go into & out of the a/c on their own…
My cat Seamus, who will cry, and cry, and cry when it’s raining, doesn’t react to fireworks at all. It’s kind of weird.

Actually kind of pleasant here in NoVa today, even though it got up into the high 80s. The humidity was down around 30 percent, though, which was key. Man-cave windows have been open the last two days. It’s supposed to go down to 66° tonight and then up to 90° tomorrow. Hope the humidity stays down (although I see that it has crept up to 60 percent now).

It’s just plain hot here in Seattle. Temperature in the 70s – to me, that’s hot. But OK hot. 80s is Not OK Hot, 90s is TooFuckingHot and beyond that it’s Kill Me Now Hot.
Back in the 80s, when the economy collapsed, I had to move back to Miami for a few years. I hated the South Florida climate with every fiber of my being, and summers were too awful for words. So hot, so humid; stepping outside was like getting wrapped in a hot wet blanket. Sweat like a televangelist just standing still, and the air felt too thick to breathe.
One trick I learned, to help get to sleep on those awful, non-air conditioned nights: Put a box fan at the foot of the bed and turn it up to High so a good wind is blowing across the bed. Get naked, spritz yourself down with water, and lay down in the wind. With any amount of luck you’ll fall asleep before you dry off.
I do that here in Seattle, too, when summer gets serious.

I get to start my fourth of July now. Other than 4th of July picnic, and trip to Yosemite next week, we try to take in Marin County Fair (yipee) which ends this weekend.
I trolled for County Fair info on a previous open thread, but will try again.
BJ people are too cool for County Fairs?
My favorite California County fairs:
Snooty Richy Rich and Wine Country fairs:
Marin, Sonoma, Napa
(Actually these are fun for me because you get see some aspects of those place from before the rich snoots moved in, back when these places were ranches, truck farms, dairies, orchards, and poor European immigrants making jug wine and beer.)
Coastal County Fairs
Monterey, Santa Cruz
Sierra Hillbilly County Fairs
Mariposa
Hard Core Central Valley Fairs
Madera
Merced
Stanislaus
San Joaquin
(Because I am true to my homeland. These fairs may not be for beginners.)
I missed Merced and San Joaquin, they moved theirs to June, which makes sense. You can enjoy the fair without heatstroke, but olde timey produce of mid summer aint there no more.
These damn things stagger along from county to county through the summer, ending up in mid September, so I may troll on this topic once more before Fall.

Ah, today in Seattle was bliss. Pure blue skies, mountains on both sides showing, and a breeze. Sweet! We start in mid-50’s, end up at 75 or so..my convertible loves this weather. Now I am home, looking out at sun setting over Colvos Passage through wall of screened windows. I found this rental on Craigs list..the weekend I knew I had to leave my home of 30 years..one of the lowest points in my life, and I found this dream. Just in case somebody out there thinks losing your home is all bad..I love this place. Oh, and tomorrow is the 42nd anniversary of my first job after college. 1969 was much like now..horrible time to look for work, I had a husband headed for law school and a 3 mos old baby girl to support. I took the job with no credentials..I had a degree in Chinese. And yes, Bill Gross is simply wrong. You don’t go to college to “learn” a career..you go for broad knowledge of the world, people different..to grow up and appreciate diversity, other cultures. Investment world was wonderful to me and I take pride in making other people money. But..I started for less money than I was making working part time in college. My father helped me through college but also told me bluntly..”you will not learn what you need to earn a living in college. Be prepared to come out and learn from scratch.” Very wise, and by taking that low starter job I ended up making millions. Which I gave away..so now I look at a beautiful sunset over the waters…Life has a magical way of working out. Thank God for the Fourteenth Amendment!!

Indescribably delicious.
In a funny way, it’s sort of become Richie Furay’s band. His voice is pretty much intact, so the material choices put him front and center. He doesn’t have all of the top end he had in the golden age of Poco, so some songs are strategically transposed down about a third (“Kind Woman,” for example, was played in G instead of the original A), but it’s still a spectacular instrument.
Because it’s not his show to carry, Young was relaxed and having fun. “I Am a Child” was a highlight of the set.
Stills’ voice is shot, and the song choices reflected that: “For What It’s Worth” and “Rock & Roll Woman,” but no “Hung Upside Down” or “Question.” Stills can still play, of course, and there were several extended workouts with him and Young trading leads.
It was big fun.

I heard E.J. Dionne on NPR today and his “performance” reminded me of why the Left is in such trouble these days.
He was on with everyone’s favorite conservative, Bobo. To his credit, Bobo came right out and admitted that we have to raise revenue and so far, Republicans have refused categorically to even consider what every responsible commentator argues is necessary. Bobo also conceded that Democrats had caved repeatedly and made significant concessions to Republicans, who have made no reciprocal concessions.
Dionne offered the same opinion and then went that predictable step too far — he said both sides had to get serious and get down to business and come up with a solution. But both commentators had already agreed that one side had already been serious; the Democrats had already done their part and made painful concessions. Yet, somehow Dionne managed to frame the finale comment as though neither side had fulfilled its obligations yet.
Only one side has not been serious. Only one side has behaved irresponsibly. Only one side needs to make future concessions — and that would be the side that has done nothing so far except to threaten to blow the whole system up.
Supposed to go to 90° today, which won’t be bad if the humidity is low, as it was yesterday. But I see it’s at 80% now. Don’t know if it will stay like that or burn off as the day gets going.
Good to know we’re neighbors! It sorta feels like it’s going to be a heavy/humid one. But yes sunny, which is good. Nothing worse than humid and all grey and clouded up…enjoy your 4th weekend.

The new Gillian Welch album “The Harrow And The Harvest” is spectacular. The songs are wonderful, of course, and David Rawlings is IMHO one of the all-time great guitar players.

How was Buffalo Springfield?

Yeah. There’s a reason why I never pursued any sort of career in music, and it ain’t because of lack of talent either.
Duly noted Alice. ;)

Then, what good is the new fence?

Fortunately, President Obama and his administration will wisely allow Israel to kill American citizens in international waters if their unarmed peace mission scares that nuclear-armed government too much.

With friends like Dionne, who needs enemies?

I never considered Dionne to be a friend. He is a Villager, no more, no less.

@Valdivia:
Yes, I live in Falls Church.
Supposed to go to 90° today, which won’t be bad if the humidity is low, as it was yesterday. But I see it’s at 80% now. Don’t know if it will stay like that or burn off as the day gets going.
It will be sunny, I do know that.

@Steeplejack
Good to know we’re neighbors! It sorta feels like it’s going to be a heavy/humid one. But yes sunny, which is good. Nothing worse than humid and all grey and clouded up…enjoy your 4th weekend.
