Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

This blog will pay for itself.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

I love how that doggie’s little tail wags nonstop while he’s swimming. He’s so obviously loving it, it’s impossible not to smile while watching this vid.

Just had breakfast, now I’m heading back to bed.

Fell last night walking out of a grocery store and I might be changing today’s plans — which were to see the Van Cleef and Arpels show at the Cooper Hewitt Museum. The rest of the weekend wasn’t planned for anyway.

Watching the US women vs. Colombia. After that, many possibilities, but no plan.

I get to spend the entire day, and I do mean ENTIRE DAY, in Bumfug, Kentucky with my in-laws. First it’s at an 80th birthday luncheon for my MIL and her friends at the “country club” and then it’s at a crappy restaurant with the Republican relatives. This will be fun.

then it’s at a crappy restaurant with the Republican relatives.

Be sure to provide an overly generous tip to your wait-staff. That’d be a subtle yet sure fire way to piss off your Repub inlaws.

PurpleGirl, sorry to hear about your fall, hope you’re feeling better. Myself, I’m on my second week with a cold whilst simultaneously dealing with a lovely case of lumbago. Pain and suffering seems to be reaching epidemic proportions…

I’m off to home depot to buy another piece of crown molding. It’s amazing how easy it is to cut the wrong angle when putting up crown molding..ugh.
The ladies Wimbledon final start in less than two hours and I plan on watching.
    Enjoy your day all.

I plan to bike, finish putting down a bit more mulch, grocery shop, bike, and then bike some more. The weather here has been so crappy, either raining or deathly hot that I haven’t been on my bike nearly enough.

I am *NOT* happy about today’s plan, simply because this is the fourth time I’ve had to go to a community-family event. Weddings, birthday parties for babies, bridal showers … I have nothing in common with these people and it’s fucking torture. I told the husband I am fine with family gatherings but don’t expect me to haul back up there for another “event.” It ain’t happening.

They won’t see me again until Thanksgiving and even that is pushing it.

YES I AM GRUMPY. To pull this off I had to get up at 5:30 am on a holiday weekend and we have to board the dogs in a kennel because I don’t see leaving them in a crate for 14 hours.

Fucking families, man. I’m an orphan, husband never has to do this shit for me.

Going to the farmer’s market with daughter, granddaughter and friends, then going swimming with same. The kids are going to their grandfather’s b-day party Sunday, but since the divorce I am now off the hook for such occasions (big cheer). I plan on thinking about painting the dining room a nice pumpkin color, but not actually getting around to it. Monday will involve more thinking about painting and more swimming. There will also be a quivering dog following me everywhere as soon as fireworks begin, which should be any time now.

I will try to enjoy the current fantastic weather in northern MN now that summer has finally arrived, while my hair is on fire about our insane republicans responsible for the state shutdown. Tourists and residents, forget about your fishing plans if you don’t already have fishing licenses.

48 hours before shutdown, The Republican legislator’s “Compromise Offer” to Gov. Dayton included policy provisions for collective bargaining reforms, cloning language, ban on taxpayer for abortions, republican redistricting plans and photo voter ids. Give us what we want or the state goes down!

Earlier in June, Rep. Mary Franson R, tweeted (under her handle of NO NEW TAXES CULT MEMBER), “Let the class warfare begin. Team GOP for me. Pro economy, pro jobs, pro Minnesota. And what team are you on? BTW, my team will win!” These lunatics think legislating a football game.

I sent an email this morning to customer service at my local grocery store asking them to place little signs or something on goods that were produced in Ohio or even in the Great Lakes region because distance traveled by food can be important.

We’ll see if they like the idea. Their customers might like to buy the produced-close-at-hand stuff.

    @Linda Featheringill:

Whole Foods does that here. They say if something is “local” or “regional” and where it’s from. What I don’t get is why we usually have to choose between organic from far away and pesticide-laden but local or regional. There are plenty of organic farms locally.

Driving across the state with Mrs. inD and Doglius to visit grandma. She’s 92, lives alone in the house she’s occupied since the ’40s and gets too few visitors. The place is awesome. Bungalow that Grandpa built on an acre of lawns and gardens that she keeps up. I’ll end up fixing her lawn mower and hauling some trees that she’s cut down. She will keep us very busy and we’ll all have a great time.
Just remembered I have to dig some of our orange lilies to transplant to one of her gardens.

I’m unemployed and have about a grand to pay rent, food, utilities, etc. until September. I have no car, sold my bike, and the college town I live in restricts or cancels mass transit on holiday weekends.

Fireworks and other municipal celebrations were cancelled due to lack of funding.

I’ll be sitting around the house reading, looking for work on the computer, and not spending money.

Edit: To paraphrase Primus, funny thing when you are unemployed. Holidays don’t mean so much, except you get to hang out with your working friends. (assuming they are treating.)

Today I will finish prepping and framing my new crazy celebrity portraits in preparation for hanging a new exhibit tomorrow in Provincetown. Unfortunately, I have to leave Boston by 5:30am and I am NOT a morning person. :P

Exhibit is at the newly refurbished and reopened Red Inn Hotel and restaurant. I am stoked to be showing my work in P-Town at high season.

I call most of my art the Fab Faces. Check it out at and let me know what you think.

I hate fireworks. My big dog (140 lbs) is petrified and tries to find a place in the house where she can’t hear them. She winds up on the slick kitchen floor and can’t get up due to major arthritis and slippery feet. Then it is up to me to get her ambulatory again. I am ready for her this year. I have already put quilts down all over the kitchen. Looks weird, but it will save my back.
On the bright side, I am going to my oldest son’s house for the best bar-b-que ever this afternoon and only have to take beer and ice. Woo-hoo!

Ouch, PurpleGirl! Hell of a thing to happen on one of the prettiest holiday weekends we have – hope you heal quickly!

This is going to be a busy weekend for me. Aquarium duty today, then I’m going to the Beer Fest to help a friend celebrate his B-Day. Tomorrow is a house party-reunion for SIFF House Coordinators. Monday I’m planning to hike in Mt. Rainier: a 2-hour drive each way at the best of times. I intend to start out way the fnck early, but fear I may run into holiday traffic on the way back.

No fireworks, much as I love ’em. Too busy making sure my kitties are in the house and safe and not freaking out.

Took my miniature dachshunds to Greenlake in Seattle this am so they could go swimming and retrieve their ball. It’s rather fun to see them in the water. Their legs are so short, they have to use their tails to stay balanced.

PG, sorry to hearabout your accident, hope that you feel better soon.

aldolphus, sorry to hear about your situation, best of luck to you.

southern beale, I sympathize with your plight, but quit bitching about it (#12). My wife and her 5 siblings are orphans, and believe me, I’ve got enough of “her side of the family events” to go to; big cookout tomorrow in fact.

Golfed with brothers-in-law this morning, having a relaxing dinner with several glasses of cab this evening with my lovely bride, aforementioned clan gathering tomorrow and wife and I ‘decompess’ on Monday. I’ll take it.
