There’s at least one prominent English expatriate blogger who doesn’t seem much interested to have told his minions to show much interest in whether or not his paymasters condone hacking into the voicemail of kidnap victims and deleting all the messages.
Update. As many of you have pointed out, Sullivan himself is on vacation. I still find it odd that the guest bloggers there haven’t taken the topic up at all.
Xenos
He just needs to figure out a way to work Oakshot or Burke into the discussion so he can be high-minded enough to countenancy villainy with the right sort of aplomb.
El Cid
I’m getting a blank page at the link. Maybe Sullivan’s article was hacked.
jacy
Why should Sully care? He’s neither a teenage kidnap victim nor her parents. If it doesn’t directly affect him, let Oakshottian principles work their way through the system!
Dennis SGMM
Link no work. Sez that it’s an archive article and that I must give them gold to read it.
meh
that was link fail…guess you don’t know how to dougie after all
Cliff
What’s that? Andrew Sullivan is a massive douchebag who no one should ever read again? I had no idea!

The paywall seems to be blocking access to his articles. I choose to regard this as a feature, not a bug.

Sorry, I fixed the link. I could see it because I registered.
The Moar You Know
So far, it has not come to light that anyone has been phone hacked on account of their gayness, their involvement with a movement to “overthrow tyranny”, their pro-war stance, or their conservative political beliefs. Therefore, Sullivan does not and will not give a shit, since he is utterly incapable of understanding the idea that “it could happen to you, too”.
He has all the lack of empathy associated with classical sociopathy, he just doesn’t get his rocks off by killing people and burying them in his basement. So far as we know.
BGinCHI
Now it’s a Google link?
Jesus, this is getting to be a part-time job.

I get a google error msg on mobile. What did sully say?
LesGS
Sullivan is on vacation. You should be happy. He’s not blogging about anything at all.
Stooleo
Sully is fucking busy man. He is either judging pictures of windows and what is outside of them, dishing up mental health breaks (God know I’d be lost without them), or asking his readers to go on at length about their first time at a gay bar. Not to mention the miracle drug that marijuana is, and changing his blog colors to green. That shit just doesn’t happen by itself. So GTFOS.

He’s on vacation.
Slightly OT, but I found myself enjoying Mourning Joe (misspelling intentional) the other day and didn’t know what was wrong with me. Was it that they mentioned the articles by Cohen and Bobo? Hmm, why did they mention those articles? Didn’t Joe tell them not to?
Then I realized that Joe was on vacation, or just too hung over to come to work. Either way, it was a much more tolerable show.
adolphus
Am I to understand that Doug is criticizing Andrew Sullivan because he hasn’t written about the Murdoch paper hacking that murdered girls phone? The link didn’t work for me.
As LEsGS said above. Sully has not blogged about anything since before the weekend. He is on vacation. He has returned to England for the fist time since the HIV ban was lifted. I understand many of you don’t read him anymore as is your right and something I can sympathize with, but it would be nice if you acquainted yourself with the facts before reaching premature conclusions, which is exactly what so many criticize (rightly IMHO) Sullivan for.
Since he is right now in England submerged in the media coverage of this case, I suspect that he eventually will in fact have much to say about it whether you agree with it or not.
Han's Solo
@Stooleo: Don’t forget the beards!
He tries so hard to make soup catchers popular.

You’ll have to do a better job of explaining what I’m supposed to be outraged about, Doug. Link ain’t working for nuthin’.

No, no, it’s “Oakshott”, not “Oakshot”. Just remember that his references to the gentleman in question are consistently pompous and vacuous displays of arrogance, and consider what sort of twee idiots would name a shop a “shoppe”, and you might remember the double-T on “Oakshott”. Or you might spell it “Oakshotte”, which is also wrong but might work as sarcastic humor about the sort of people who invoke his name.
@ adolphus, #19
No, Doug is criticizing Sully for taking money from the Murdoch empire that screwed with the search for a missing girl for prurient reasons. Actually, Doug’s criticism is a bit thin stuff here: Sully probably will make pious mouthings about this business, eventually. But at the end of the day, Sully’s true friends are mostly monsters, and Sully’s not overly bothered by that.
J.A.F. Rusty Shackleford
What would Andrew Sullivan’s conservative life be like if it wasn’t for liberals making it better?
Jon H
It’s interesting that Sullivan’s stand-ins haven’t blogged on it, but as noted, Sullivan is on vacation, and he usually doesn’t post much when on vacation.
Jon H
I would like to see more efforts on this side of the pond to stir up anti-News Corp boycotts and pressure on advertisers, in support of the anti-NOTW efforts.

Sorry, DougJ. This is a post fail. I’ll happily criticize Sullivan for many things but being on vacation isn’t one of them. He is still British, after all. Unlike Americans, those people are used to their vacations. It would be cruel to deny them.

Hoist upon my own petard. Or perhaps petarde.

Yeah, no shit. I tried to get a Republican to understand that giving the government a license for warrantless wiretapping was a fucking bad idea once by pointing out “look, maybe Bush was honorable enough not to misuse it, but are you comfortable with Obama being able to do the same?” Didn’t sink in, of course – the REAL problem is that Bush was good and Obama was bad.
Which, you know, if it was as simple as just “elect good people and they won’t abuse the system,” we wouldn’t even need a goddamn constitution in the first place. The reason it exists is to make sure those kinds of abuse are checked no matter what kind of politician’s in office.
But for them, it all comes down to nothing but “the right people or the wrong people.”
Herb

Good point. And as far as I know we haven’t heard what Matt Groening has to say on this matter either. He’s taken millions as part of the Murdoch empire. I say boycott the Simpsons until he expresses suitable outrage over this incident.
@ 25 J.A.F. Rusty Shackleford
Indeed, which is one of his innate contradictions he can be so blind to.
C’mon people. Sullivan is a big, slow, bearded easy target of legitimate criticism. To complain that he won’t come back from vacation or demand his minions/stand-ins to write about something is just thin gruel.
He’ll be back soon enough to write something to piss you all off and you can get your Sully-hating fix then.
Librarian
Sully is “on vacation”? From what? His entire life is one long vacation.
Jim C.
@adolphus
I agree with you on this one. Plenty of times to take pot shots at Sully for legitimate reasons. Not abruptly cutting short his vacation to blog isn’t something I feel is particularly damning.
If this story is still in the news when he gets back and he doesn’t say something about it at that point, then yell at him then.
Warren Terra
@ adolphus, #34
There is a real question about whether Matt Groenig, or Joss Whedon, or other people whose work we like, really should be taking Rupert’s coin, and whether we should take them to task for doing so.
Still, there are realms and realms within the sprawling Fox empire. The Sunday Times, which pays Sully, is rather closer to the abuses of Murdoch’s other British newspapers than is the entertainment division of Fox’s American television network.
Bill Murray
@24 Jon H.
That’s one way we can separate John Cole from Andrew Sullivan

If Andrew has taken money from the Times with actual knowledge of what NotW did, then the criticism is warranted. If not, then try harder next time.
Jewish Steel
@Librarian: Onerous, back braking blog-work.
My pappy died of blog-lung at 50. It’s cruel work.
*uh, breaking, dude.
Warren Terra
@ burnspbesq,
1) That the NOTW had been hacking phones, including deleting messages, had been public knowledge for at least a year – it’s already claimed the scalp of PM Cameron’s press secretary, a former NOTW editor who almost certainly approved such actions (among many other shady practices). Doing this to the phone of a missing little girl is a new low, but probably shouldn’t surprise anyone too greatly. The fact that his paymasters were amoral bastards isn’t news.
2) I take it that you demand Sully resign his Sunday Tones column?
Barney
On vacation? That’s what all Murdoch minions say when it’s convenient.
shecky
I’m sure as soon as Sully’s backup finds they’ve been outed by BJ for supporting NotW phone hacking, they’ll post on the matter.
burnspbesq
@Warren Terra:
I don’t demand anything. My personal view is that If Andrew doesn’t want fleas, he should cease lying down with dogs.
DougJ in Damascus
If we’re lucky, we’ll get an Moore award for suggesting this, but I won’t hold my breath.
