Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This blog will pay for itself.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

A consequence of cucumbers

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

This really is a full service blog.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

This fight is for everything.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

After roe, women are no longer free.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

There’s at least one prominent English expatriate blogger who doesn’t seem much interested to have told his minions to show much interest in whether or not his paymasters condone hacking into the voicemail of kidnap victims and deleting all the messages.

Update. As many of you have pointed out, Sullivan himself is on vacation. I still find it odd that the guest bloggers there haven’t taken the topic up at all.

Why should Sully care? He’s neither a teenage kidnap victim nor her parents. If it doesn’t directly affect him, let Oakshottian principles work their way through the system!

So far, it has not come to light that anyone has been phone hacked on account of their gayness, their involvement with a movement to “overthrow tyranny”, their pro-war stance, or their conservative political beliefs. Therefore, Sullivan does not and will not give a shit, since he is utterly incapable of understanding the idea that “it could happen to you, too”.

He has all the lack of empathy associated with classical sociopathy, he just doesn’t get his rocks off by killing people and burying them in his basement. So far as we know.

Sully is fucking busy man. He is either judging pictures of windows and what is outside of them, dishing up mental health breaks (God know I’d be lost without them), or asking his readers to go on at length about their first time at a gay bar. Not to mention the miracle drug that marijuana is, and changing his blog colors to green. That shit just doesn’t happen by itself. So GTFOS.

Slightly OT, but I found myself enjoying Mourning Joe (misspelling intentional) the other day and didn’t know what was wrong with me. Was it that they mentioned the articles by Cohen and Bobo? Hmm, why did they mention those articles? Didn’t Joe tell them not to?

Then I realized that Joe was on vacation, or just too hung over to come to work. Either way, it was a much more tolerable show.

Am I to understand that Doug is criticizing Andrew Sullivan because he hasn’t written about the Murdoch paper hacking that murdered girls phone? The link didn’t work for me.

As LEsGS said above. Sully has not blogged about anything since before the weekend. He is on vacation. He has returned to England for the fist time since the HIV ban was lifted. I understand many of you don’t read him anymore as is your right and something I can sympathize with, but it would be nice if you acquainted yourself with the facts before reaching premature conclusions, which is exactly what so many criticize (rightly IMHO) Sullivan for.

Since he is right now in England submerged in the media coverage of this case, I suspect that he eventually will in fact have much to say about it whether you agree with it or not.

No, no, it’s “Oakshott”, not “Oakshot”. Just remember that his references to the gentleman in question are consistently pompous and vacuous displays of arrogance, and consider what sort of twee idiots would name a shop a “shoppe”, and you might remember the double-T on “Oakshott”. Or you might spell it “Oakshotte”, which is also wrong but might work as sarcastic humor about the sort of people who invoke his name.

No, Doug is criticizing Sully for taking money from the Murdoch empire that screwed with the search for a missing girl for prurient reasons. Actually, Doug’s criticism is a bit thin stuff here: Sully probably will make pious mouthings about this business, eventually. But at the end of the day, Sully’s true friends are mostly monsters, and Sully’s not overly bothered by that.

Yeah, no shit. I tried to get a Republican to understand that giving the government a license for warrantless wiretapping was a fucking bad idea once by pointing out “look, maybe Bush was honorable enough not to misuse it, but are you comfortable with Obama being able to do the same?” Didn’t sink in, of course – the REAL problem is that Bush was good and Obama was bad.

Which, you know, if it was as simple as just “elect good people and they won’t abuse the system,” we wouldn’t even need a goddamn constitution in the first place. The reason it exists is to make sure those kinds of abuse are checked no matter what kind of politician’s in office.

But for them, it all comes down to nothing but “the right people or the wrong people.”

Good point. And as far as I know we haven’t heard what Matt Groening has to say on this matter either. He’s taken millions as part of the Murdoch empire. I say boycott the Simpsons until he expresses suitable outrage over this incident.

    @ 25 J.A.F. Rusty Shackleford
Indeed, which is one of his innate contradictions he can be so blind to.

C’mon people. Sullivan is a big, slow, bearded easy target of legitimate criticism. To complain that he won’t come back from vacation or demand his minions/stand-ins to write about something is just thin gruel.

He’ll be back soon enough to write something to piss you all off and you can get your Sully-hating fix then.

I agree with you on this one. Plenty of times to take pot shots at Sully for legitimate reasons. Not abruptly cutting short his vacation to blog isn’t something I feel is particularly damning.

There is a real question about whether Matt Groenig, or Joss Whedon, or other people whose work we like, really should be taking Rupert’s coin, and whether we should take them to task for doing so.

Still, there are realms and realms within the sprawling Fox empire. The Sunday Times, which pays Sully, is rather closer to the abuses of Murdoch’s other British newspapers than is the entertainment division of Fox’s American television network.

    @ burnspbesq,
    1) That the NOTW had been hacking phones, including deleting messages, had been public knowledge for at least a year – it’s already claimed the scalp of PM Cameron’s press secretary, a former NOTW editor who almost certainly approved such actions (among many other shady practices). Doing this to the phone of a missing little girl is a new low, but probably shouldn’t surprise anyone too greatly. The fact that his paymasters were amoral bastards isn’t news.

    2) I take it that you demand Sully resign his Sunday Tones column?
