Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Republicans in disarray!

Glad to see john eastman going through some things.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

People are complicated. Love is not.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

    Happy Birthday to your Dad!!!

As we say in Russian – “Mnogaya Lyeta!” Literally – ‘Many years.’ I’d translate it into ‘Many, many, happy returns.’

Happy Birthday to your dad, John. My dad will turn 80 in October and it seems shocking to me. In my mind, he’s always locked in his mid-sixties and will never get older. I know that’s irrational, but that’s how it feels. He doesn’t seem old to me.

    Have a great party!

c u n d gulag, #7: Wouldn’t that be, literally, ‘Many summers’ since many years would be ‘Mnogo let?’ Or is that some drevnorusskaya construct, let v. god, of which I am unaware?

    In any event…

Anyone else have the feeling that Clarence Thomas is laughing hysterically through all of this deficit talk since we all seem to have forgotten the depth of his corruption?

#30: It is a phrase from Old Church Slavonic. But modern Russian also has a plural “leta” meaning years, and the genitive plural of year, “god,” is “let.”

#35, ‘let’ is itself the genitive plural of ‘god’ so ‘leta’ would be the plural form of the OCS word ‘let’ which came to mean only summer in early-modern Russian by adding the neuter suffix -o.

  40. 40.

    gogol's wife

    July 15, 2011 at 1:18 pm

#39: I think we’re saying the same thing. The OCS word for year has survived in modern Russian but only in the plural (in certain meanings) and in the genitive plural of “god.” And the word for summer is related. Or something like that!

  41. 41.

    LGRooney

    July 15, 2011 at 1:21 pm

If you’re saying that лета is the plural of summer, then, yes, we are saying the same thing. ;-)

  42. 42.

    gogol's wife

    July 15, 2011 at 1:26 pm

#41, yes it is, but there are also current expressions where leta is a plural of year. I’m leaving for a trip so don’t have time to specify!

@schrodinger’s cat: Homer is fine, no recent pics.. Seems there is a thing called cat acne that causes black spots on the chin, he was showing that, as were the other two. Seems stainless food/water bowls are called for, as plastic harbors the acne germs. Ordered.

JeffreyW: Also, tea tree oil rubbed on the acne makes it go away pretty quickly and alleviates any infection. Just cleared up a nasty bout of of it with one of mine. And I have ceramic dishes, so no idea how or why he got such a bad case of it.

Baby Margaret (Maggie) and mom are doing well. Maggie was born at 3:36pm, weighing 7lbs 5oz.

But then tonight I spent over two hours getting our 2-year old to go to sleep. I’ve been the one to bathe him, read to him, and tuck him in for the past year, but tonight he decided he must have his mommy. Fun, fun.
