Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The willow is too close to the house.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Second rate reporter says what?

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Consistently wrong since 2002

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Wingnuts get very offended when you point out what will happen if their ideas are allowed to become reality:

Florida GOP Congressman Allen West this afternoon dispatched a scathing personal email to Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, calling her “vile, unprofessional ,and despicable,” “a coward,” “characterless,” and “not a Lady,” and demanding that she “shut the heck up.”

Wasserman Schultz, in whose neighboring South Florida district West lives, provoked his tirade with remarks after he left the House floor today, in which she responded — without naming him — to the Tea Party freshman’s support for “Cut, Cap, and Balance” legislation to raise the debt ceiling.

“The gentleman from Florida. who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries, unbelievable from a Member from South Florida,” Wasserman Schultz said, saying the legislation “slashes Medicaid and critical investments essential to winning the future in favor of protecting tax breaks for Big Oil, millionaires, and companies who ship American jobs overseas.”

Her criticism of the legislation — more or less what most Democrats are saying today — provoked a furious response. West copied members of House Republican and Democratic leadership on the email, as well as his chief-of-staff, Jonathan Blyth.

Thin-skinned bullies. Read the letter- I love the “say it to my face” bit. Didn’t some wingnut blog get pissy with me because I forgot to link them and they ranted about “say it to my face” because, you know, everything on the internet is face to face. I forget who it was, but it was funny.

I said this on the previous thread: I can’t believe how he ended the letter:

You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!

WTF? A woman has to be a “Lady” to deserve respect? What kind of bizarre, antiquated, sexist nonsense is that? By those ancient rules, he’s a black man and therefore not deserving of respect. Does he want to play that way?

Yes, ma’am, Miss Debbie can get feisty at times. Love it.

But her comments he is complaining about represent nothing but the truth. How can any politician claim to represent his constituents if he/she is actively working to sabotage their health and a modicum of security in their later years? How can this clown [West] claim to represent the people in his district?

On the other hand, her succinct analysis of his position might have passed mostly unnoticed had West not thrown such a hissy fit. Thank you Allen.

For Republicans there is no downside to acting like a rabid weasel any time anybody says anything. Jake Tapper and Mark Halperin, both straight news reporters, not commentators, both at mainstream networks, will say that DWS was uncivil because she told the truth. Both sides do it, see?

    Worth quoting her spokesman’s response:

“I don’t think that Congressman West is upset at the Congresswoman, but rather with the fact that she highlighted that he and other Republicans are once again trying to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, children and the middle class. As someone who lives in Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz’s Congressional district, Congressman West knows that we have hundreds of thousands of seniors in South Florida who have paid into Medicare throughout their lives and now rely on this program to keep them healthy and active. The truth hurts.”

Thought it was Dan Reihl, but probly not. It doesn’t look like the House wingnuts are letting up one iota on their Pickett’s charge under the destroy medicare flag. It is early in the election campaign, and mid summer, so the full effect of their position has likely not been fully absorbed by the masses. But it will be, and even if a sensible candidate wanted to stay away from that hornets nest, the tea tards won’t let them.

The tea Party and their supporters are working a version of their own long game, to make it passe and mainstream to gut the New Deal and social safety net, and the frosh crop of true believers in congress, are resembling kamikazes hell bent on sinking the dem parties golden chalice of fully woven programs into the matrix of American life. Or, at least doing some damage to it, to change the narrative to direct attack and neutralizing the third rail.

They may succeed somewhat in the long run, especially if they manage to monkey wrench the general economy, but for the short term, they are as much holding the GOP hostage as the country, or democratic party.

Can I just say that the valence of this is very creepy? The whole “say it to my face” thing when a loose cannon like West says it is aimed at intimidation, a very sexist kind of intimidation. This is exactly what led Prosser to grab the other judge by the neck. There’s a certain kind of guy who has always relied on physicality and women’s reticence to dominate a room and an issue. They totally lose it when they, as they see it, lose face, are not “respected” or can’t retaliate physically.

This reminds me of the old line:

Men are afraid women will laugh at them.
Women are afraid men will kill them.

West is a lunatic and he’s done himself no good with this bizarre mix of rage and spittle. But that doesn’t mean the congresswoman shouldn’t watch her back.

It’s nice to see the economy finally showing some positive signs but by no means are all of the indicators green (see unemployment and jobs numbers from earlier this month) indicating that the recovery is at hand and we can all go back to our day jobs again.

To be fair he’s totally right. The cut-cap-and-balance bill is way different than the Ryan budget, which specifically cuts Medicaid and Medicare drastically. Rather, the Ryan budget spends way too much money to be valid if cut-cap-and-balance were to become law: the Ryan budget violates all 3 requirements of cut/cap/balance and would continue to do so for many years. It raises taxes (“widens the tax base” in Ryan’s parlance), runs a deficit for a long time (even if you believe magic accounting), and requires a massive debt ceiling increase.

Little OT, but this is as good a place to ask it as anywhere

Up here, if a government member goes way beyond the pale, their party can vote him/her out. (It’s an easy way to limit the damage to the party itself) S/He doesn’t lose the seat, they just become an independent. If the circumstances change (i.e not guilty), they get let back in.

Now I know IOKIYAR, but do the parties in the USA even have this mechanism? I’ve been wondering if in order to get the debt ceiling passed, a freshman teapartier would have their closet skeletons released, and then thrown out of the GOP by the powers that be as a warning to the rest. (Out of 80+, someone has to have secrets)

@Canuckistani Tom: I’ve never heard someone being kicked out of one of the parties. They may leave and join the other party. Like everything else, members who step out of line are technically disciplined by the party leaders and it is usually campaign finance related. They may be left out in the cold when it comes to doling out the money for the national election committees. Or they may not get that committee assignment (that oversees that industry that is expected to contribute to their election committee). Some of the committee assignments are more lucrative than others. Yeah, there are prestige committees, and those for the public minded, but the ones that deal with, say, financial services oversight double as piggy banks.

Yep. It’s a lovely system we had here until Citizen’s United added another layer (even larger perhaps) of money control to the mix.

Here in the US you’re a member of a party if you say you’re a member and you can change parties any time. The only exceptions I know of are

    1. Congressional D and R caucuses can refuse to accept you, but I don’t think they’ve ever done that even for ‘independents’ like Lieberman.

    2. Many, but not all, primaries require you to register as a member of the party before voting. You can register in a different party for the next primary, though. Wisconsin’s fake Democrats in the recent recall primaries were perfectly legal ratf*ckers.

So, Bender, explain to us what part of the above is “lies.”

Short answer: It’s a very, very false choice. Even if we took away tax breaks on — and these focus-grouped bogeymen are all really lies, too — corporate jets, “Big Oil,” “Millionaires,” corporate jets, and “job-shippers,” (and corporate jets!) Medicare would still be dead broke in 2024 or soon after. There’s no trade-off that could save Medicare. Debbie Whassupwithherface-Schlitz knows this. She just hopes she (and her buddies in the media) can fool low-info voters with the same-old 1982-era boilerplate bullshit.

Because you don’t like it? The only one of Debbie Wasserface-Schillz focus-grouped imaginary “savings” that would have any real impact would be the repeal of Bush tax cuts for upper-incomes. This is estimated by the Democrats to save $700B over 10 years (which is a joke in itself, but let’s accept it for now). That entire amount would pay for about the next 18 months of Medicare. That’s it. So instead of being broke by 2024 like the trustees say, it might make it to 2025.

Economists at Capital Economics in Toronto, who had forecast a big jump in June starts, said the gain was catch-up after unusually severe weather had prevented builders from breaking new ground.
    __
In addition, reconstruction from deadly tornadoes and floods was going to get under way, they said.
    __
“Housing starts may continue to creep gradually higher from their still depressed levels. But the low rate of household formation, the high supply of existing homes and tough competition from foreclosed homes will mean that starts are unlikely to return to a normal level of around 1 million for another four years yet,” said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, in a research note.
