Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

White supremacy is terrorism.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

No Justins, No Peace

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Everybody saw this coming.

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. don’t touch it.”

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

He imagines himself as The Big Bad, Who Is Universally Feared… instead of The Big Jagoff, Who Is Universally Mocked.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

The frogs are rarely mistaken.

Somebody needs to explain to DeSantis that nobody needs to do anything to make him look bad.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The ultimate “entitlement” is to inherit a fortune.

Why that particular “entitlement” isn’t a concern, but Social Security subsistence is, really does not elude me that much. The former entitlement is for a select few, the latter for the vile masses.

OT, a little interesting fallout from the Casey Anthony case:

According to a software designer who created the computer program used by police and prosecutors to allege that Casey Anthony had conducted a Google search of the word “chloroform” 84 times, the prosecution erred in their assertion regarding the computer search and knew they might be doing so prior to the conclusion of the Anthony trial.
    __
Bradley says that upon discovering the mistake, he immediately emailed and phoned prosecutor, Linda Drane Burdick, and Sgt. Kevin Stenger of the sheriff’s office to disclose his findings, expecting that this new piece of information would be provided to the defense.
    __
    It was not.

The prosecution cannot withhold exculpatory evidence. This may have guaranteed a new trial had the jury not come in with a not guilty verdict.

The prosecution cannot withhold exculpatory evidence.

The prosecution was operating under the assumption that they were covered by the Nancy Grace rules of jurisprudence.

I love this language from the Heritage Foundation flack

He’s not only a liar, he is a truly evil power muncher. He’s been at this ‘shrink the government until it is small enough to drown in the bathtub’ for years and years. Why does he do it? “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of man”.

“Someday”, we may be privileged (like the Shadow) to learn what awful things he has done in pursuit of this James Bond-like classic evil goal.

It’s like Murdock and Nixon. He looks clean because everyone if afraid to probe deeply into what he’s done.

More OT — So the story broke about Michelle Bachmann’s headaches, and her security manhandling ABC’s Brian Ross who tried to ask her about it. I just looked at the Swampland post on it and saw Michelle’s “prepared statement” about her migraines. It contained this:

But I’d like to be abundantly clear: My ability to function effectively will not affect my ability to serve as commander in chief.

What does this even mean? If she functions effectively she can’t be commander in chief? If she doesn’t function she can still be CIC? She can be CIC no matter how ineffectively she functions? Huh?

    .
    .
    Grover Norquist is a liar.

    True.

    Now consider these statements…

+ “Social Security is the cornerstone of the social compact in this country.”
+ “The underlying system is sound. The actual problem is a projected cash shortfall that can be readily solved.”
+ “On issues as fundamental as how to protect Social Security, a candidate for president owes it to the American people to tell us where they stand,” because you’re not ready to lead if you can’t tell us where you’re going.”
+ “I do not believe that we need to cut benefits or raise the retirement age.”
+ “The best option, in my view, is to ask the highest income Americans to contribute a little bit more by raising the ceiling on what is currently paid on the amount of earnings subject to the social security tax.”
+ “We need to stop borrowing millions from the Social Security trust fund” in the federal budget.

She can be CIC no matter how ineffectively she functions?

I think that’s exactly it. It’s not the job she wants, it’s the title. If she were president, she’d do like St. Ronnie did and appoint a bunch of people to do all her work for her. Then she’d focus on all the stuff a president really does, like posing for photos and inviting all kinds of important people to the White House.

More OT but only cause I’m so in love with Bachmann’s effectivenss not being a bar to here being CIC

Yates first wrote: “I am coming over to see the PM at 12.30 today regarding [redacted: national security] matters. I am very happy to have a conversation in the margins around the other matters that have caught my attention this week if you thought it would be useful.”
    __
On the same day, Llewellyn responded: “On the other matters that have caught your attention this week, assuming we are thinking of the same thing, I am sure you will understand that we will want to be able to be entirely clear, for your sake and ours, that we have not been in contact with you about this subject.
    __
“So I don’t think it would really be appropriate for the PM, or anyone else at No 10, to discuss this issue with you, and would be grateful if it were not raised, please.
    __
“But the PM looks forward to seeing you, with Peter Ricketts and Jonathan Evans, purely on [redacted: national security] matters at 12.30.”

    Dear Grover,

Since its apparent that you don’t like taxes and can’t seem to find any reason that would justify the paying of taxes, please take thee hither to Somalia, where there are no taxes and feel free to spend your money without the interference of any government entity.

The rest of us would like to live in a society where schools are funded, roads are paved, food is checked, the environment is safe and the courts are staffed with ethical folks who understand the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, plus having a few police officers around to take care of the drunks on the weekends.

I’m sorry you had to suffer from migraines, and that your wife does now. They really suck and I have sympathy for those that suffer with them, even if the people who suffer are not very nice or good people.

One of my good friends suffers from migraines. She’s one of the very highest achieving people I know, with multiple advanced degrees, a very challenging job that takes her all over the world, a busy family life and a bunch of hobbies to fill those spare moments. Oh, and pets. She’s a dynamo. But when she gets a migraine and doesn’t start the medication soon enough, she pretty much has to hide in bed until it passes. It really sucks for her.

Fun BJ Fact: Grover’s daddy was a Polaroid VP. My grandmother used to clean his office.

Warren (unlike Dr. Land, who was good to his staff) was apparently an asshole. Google “Grover Norquist ice cream cone” for an example.
