Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Come on, man.

This fight is for everything.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Everybody saw this coming.

We still have time to mess this up!

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Republicans in disarray!

Consistently wrong since 2002

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

    This is pure insanity:

With 12 days left until the Treasury begins to run short of cash, Obama and Boehner (R-Ohio) were still pursuing the most ambitious plan to restrain the national debt in at least 20 years. Talks focused on sharp cuts in agency spending and politically painful changes to cherished health and retirement programs aimed at saving roughly $3 trillion over the next decade. . . More savings would be generated through an overhaul of the tax code that would lower personal and corporate income tax rates while eliminating or reducing an array of popular tax breaks, such as the deduction for home mortgage interest.

The time for Grand Bargains and Great Deals is over. We’ve got twelve fucking days before we run out of money, and these idiots think they can get a bill overhauling the tax code through the Senate in that time?

Mr. President, have Speaker Boehner escorted to the nearest bar and get to work passing the Reid-McConnell deal. It’s the only chance you’ve got before Aug. 2.

So open thread means we can pimp our own blogs, right? Because William H. Brewer (writing 150 years ago) on the mercury mines at New Idria is pretty fascinating stuff, IMO.

    @Mark S.:

To expand on my point, I wouldn’t be opposed to reforming the tax code, but not in the span of a week. That’s something that needs committee hearings, CBO scoring, actual debate, etc. To ram it through on some bill to save us from financial disaster is the height of irresponsibility.

Oh man… the bullshit piled up so fast in DC, you needed wings to stay above it. ..

Todd is breathlessly reporting some kind of whacky mutually assured destruction that if the tax code isn’t revamped by 1-1-13, then the Bush tax cuts for the rich would be cancelled, and parts of the ACA would be repealed, or something.

    Insane – everyone

We are driving 2 10 hour days from LI to Disney World. I have a 9 year old son and a 16 year old daughter.

What music MUST we listen to on the way down (and back)?

My daughter loves everything from Rap to Dean Martin to Brooks & Dunn. I love most except for Rap and dance music.

    My son … is 9.

Escaping today for the annual handsmile pilgrimage to coastal Maine; a trip that makes bearable the rest of the year in this urban hellhole.

If the GOP nihilists do implode the global economy, perhaps I’ll be able to scrounge up some work on a lobster boat. (A link, and surprisingly not from the Guardian:)

It’s logically and politically possible to dislike both Obama and Republicans.

In a vacuum, not in the political arena we engage in. It is zero sum. Whatever support is with held from one, goes to the other. Unless, you just don’t care which, then you are merely a dead weight with nothing to offer, except posting soul less quips on the internet.

It is possible to support a president on your side, and criticize them at the same time. But not with dismissive rhetoric, devoid of substance, and with the effort necessary to walk that line.

Before they died my folks entered that bitter stage some marriages hit. Neither seemed to be able to go for any length of time without spontaneously tossing a grenade at the other. This blog seems to have reached that stage.

Both sides do it. right? If your delicate sensibilities are that offended, maybe you seek a more harmonious blogging experience? Just a polite suggestion.

This place has always been contentious, in one way or another. I said I was shutting up and you could have your “sensible conversation” and this is all you can muster?

Now I am leaving, unless there is more gratuitous whining to answer.
