Cease your worrying and nattering — the question of whether xenophobic loners will have the freedom to cut-and-paste 1500 page racist missives in Norway after this weekend’s slaughter has been answered by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg:
At a press conference at his Oslo residence, Stoltenberg underlined his commitment to openness, defending freedom of thought, even if includes extremist views such as those held by the 32-year-old who confessed to Friday’s bomb blast and to the shooting massacre.
“We have to be very clear to distinguish between extreme views, opinions that are completely legal, legitimate to have, [and] what is not legitimate is to try to implement those extreme views by using violence,” he said.
Degrease your slippery slopes, burn your strawmen for heat on a cool night, and get back to the simple, rewarding work of hating anyone who doesn’t share your beliefs or skin color. Your rights are protected, even if your hearts’ desire is to deprive everyone else of the same freedom you enjoy.

Freedom isn’t free.

Damn those Europeans with their big intrusive governments that limit freedom. When will they learn from the land of the free where that kind of rhetoric is punishable by due process-free assassination attempts a la Anwar al-Awlaki?

I know I’m tired from a frantic two days of travel, but I’m just not seeing where you’re going? Sounds an awful lot like the freedoms that are supposed to exist here: You can say whatever you want, as long as it’s purpose is not to incite violence. And yes, it does cause us to end up with people who have no concept of what it actually means to take someones right away.
ETA: Maybe your entire point was to go after someone for causing violence in the cause of trying to gain something he already had. If that’s the case, then if you figure out how to get through to these type of people, I will fund your spread of this technique throughout the US.

Reality Check will be checking in soon to confirm that, indeed, Pat Buchanan is his hero, and that everyone should have the right to voice their opinion on how swell that Hitler fella was.

While repugnant, we must respect the KKK’s right to their beliefs and race hatred.
However, Obama is simply an anti-colonialist Allah-worshiping broccoli-loving socialist who hates white people.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Those european “anti-jihadist” assholes said they didn’t have freedom of speech before this. Would proclaim in 1500 word essays that they were suffering under a dictatorial, politically correct, hate speech law regime….and they have been doing that since I first noticed them around 9/11. Then they would issue a bunch of bloodthirsty rhetoric about Muslims and organize some mob to go chant nonsense at the local mosque. Then they would get back to bitching about how the state was silencing them.

To contrast a level-headed response to terrorism with the Repukes/Chimp’s, “Be afraid. Watch what you say. Support my arbitrary invasions or you’re a traitor. And don’t stop shopping.”
PIGL
Hi, Mr. Trolling Dick. I’m not so much for censorship, as preventive detention. If writings of that sort come to light, the author should be sentenced to be detained, as we say in Commonwealth countries, during Her Majesty’s pleasure.
But then, I am not a liberal. I think there should be laws that would permit the divestiture and piece-wise sale of media enterprises such as Murdoch’s and all the other entities that hide monopoly power and political subversion under a threadbare facade of freedom of speech.
And I think these laws should be rigidly enforced. I think that makes a militant socialist, although it fact it only makes be a fan of Theodore Roosevelt.
He also gave us national parks.

@Trollenschlongen:
Here, let me help you out:
The PM of Norway was saying that while criminal acts will be investigated and prosecuted, his country will always safeguard freedom of thought and expression, however extreme they may be. So anyone fearing a crackdown on such thoughts and expressions in the wake of Anders Breivik’s killing spree may now safely direct their concern-trolling elsewhere.
I’m afraid there’s nothing here that will allow you to showcase your superior gifts of insight.

THANK YOU, Mistermix, for a good laugh at the end of a long day.

@Mike G: Also, to contrast that level-headed response with the right-wing fantasy that the people who dare criticize their extreme and often violent rhetoric are wannabe Leftist dictators plotting to deprive them of their freedom of speech.

Other Republican news that is totally not hyperventilating: the S&P gloomspeak ratings on the debt ceiling agreement was all an ACORN, Jimmy Carter, Barney Fag, and FANNIEFREDDIE conspiracy!

The Norwegians handled this act of terrorism with grace and dignity. The young people organized a rally against racism and the country banded together. Their quiet dignity beats our belligerent patriotism.

Jesus Christ, I made the mistake of clicking on some of the Google search results under mistermix’s first link. Apparently people who criticize hateful and xenophobic views like Breivik’s are responsible for driving him to take up arms and murder kids. Such criticism was suppressing his speech, and so of course he resorted to violence since he couldn’t speak freely.

Ooh, sorry, douche. I don’t spend my days on wingnut web sites as you and mistermix apparently do, so was unaware of the alleged “trolling.” You twits love that word, don’t you?

do you know why America just spent 4.4 trillion taxpayer dollars for nothing?
Because shariah law forbids proselytization of the poor and ignorant, and freedom of speech legalizes the proselytization of the poor and ignorant.

The Norwegian PM’s response is, as the English football writers say, “inch-perfect.”
Free societies are supposed to fight terrorism with one hand tied behind their backs (wish I had save the link to the Economist article that originated that useful phrase). That’s what it means to be a free society. If you don’t then the terrorists win. That’s what Cheney never understood.

I also think that legal remedies should exist against lying by politicians and the media in public matters. That would include op-ed columnists like George Will and many others, who should be in gaol for deliberately and maliciously endangering the biosphere and the lives of billions. The media empires that empower then should be forthwith dismantled, and the owners divested of their interests for manifest and depraved indifference to their duties as protectors of the public interest.
But then, I am not a liberal. I think there should be laws that would permit the divestiture and piece-wise sale of media enterprises such as Murdoch’s and all the other entities that hide monopoly power and political subversion under a threadbare facade of freedom of speech.

I’d just like to say that I’m disgusted by the professional commentary on this criminal act.
Not you mistermix, the pros.
No authentic feeling, whatsoever. It’s a bunch of self-centered, self-absorbed punditry gibberish, and it’s disgustingly disrespectful to the people in that country. They’ve managed to turn this into yet another boring meditation on the state of the conservative soul in the US, as if we don’t spend enough time analyzing conservatives as it is.
Enough. Real people died, and it was a criminal and political act of terror. I do not want to spend one minute worrying about US conservatives and their fucking feelings.
We would be outraged if Norwegian commentary had been as stupid and self-centered and Norwegian-centric as US commentary was here after one of our (many, many) mass shootings/bombings. I’m ashamed of us. We’re incapable of empathy or looking outward, towards others, or the genuine horror and sadness this should have provoked. It all sounds phony and contrived and about us.
