Since I have had the reply button fixed, I feel comfortable showing my face again. My friend Brian is in town for a visit (better known to you all as husband of Tammy and father of Sam), and we did our usual cook and drink and gorge routine. every couple of months we get together and make a boatload of food and drink a ton and eat until we are ready to fall over.
We spent the better part of the afternoon making homemade pasta. We made a Bechamel and added a bunch of crab meat, let that cool, and stuffed a ton of ravioli. We froze most of it, but ate a serving with a butter/olive oil sauce with fresh basil. Then we took some Aussie range Tenderloins, and grilled those and ate them. Very good, and with a much more complex flavor than regular tenderloins. At first you get a beefy juice, then it has a gamey, almost mutton-like finish. Finally, we cook veal scallopini with some of the linguini we made, and a sauce with cream and fire-roasted tomatoes and onions and garlic.
We briefly discussed a vegetable course earlier, then giggled and had a scotch.
For dessert I made Irish coffees, and made a nice topping with Frangelico, sugar, and heavy whipping cream. Man, was that good. I could just drink the whipped cream by itself.
At any rate, that is how my day went. It was awesome. Fuck the Republicans, fuck politics.
This song has been running through my head:

I am fucking sick of this shit. When is one single member of the MSM going to call out this bullshit for what it really is.
Debt Limit raised 199.5% during Regan admin, 48% Bush I, 43.6% Clinton, 90.2% Bush II, so far during Obama admin 26%. When is the lightbulb going to go on over the head of a single MSM commentator and he (or she says) “Hmmmmm what is different about this POTUS, why was it fine to increase the debt limit with no terms for the other presidents but it is not okay now…… hmmmmm *scratches head* goodness whatever could it be”

I don’t care for the tone of the diary where it implies that Obama would rather eff progressives than do something like this, so we have to prove to him that we know about it, or he won’t do it! My eyes get tired from rolling when I read stuff like that.
If Obama doesn’t do this, and I highly suspect that he will not, I will assume that there’s a good reason for that. That probably makes me an O-bot around here, but w/e.

@JGabriel:
You’re implying this is an inaccurate statement? There is no proposal out there that doesn’t involve massive cuts. This isn’t “both parties still unable to compromise” false equivalency, but a case of actual equivalence. Intentionally making the economy worse is madness, and that’s what both parties are advocating. At least the NYT editorial board is pushing back.
Should they do like Pelosi instead and go give some “kiss your Medicare goodbye” stemwinder in defense of Reid’s nearly-identical plan?

A bit of good news that has gone under the radar:
President Barack Obama and automobile manufacturers announced on Friday a deal to double overall fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, reducing fuel consumption by 40% and carbon emissions by 50%, and reducing carbon dioxide pollution by over 6 billion metric tons.

Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, announced earlier this month that the administration has instituted a new program called Troops to Energy. The goal of the program is to provide soon to be discharged interested active duty service members with education, career training, and job placement so that they can transition into the energy industry with sustainable green energy jobs. The program is offered free of charge, and job placement can be made prior to the End of Active Service date. Educating and employing Veterans while addressing our energy future. It’s a win-win.

@Quiddity: or maybe he called the Dem leaders to make sure that they were all on the same page and that the Dems would continue to have a united front. Put aside all the other stuff, and I’m amazed that people haven’t noticed that unlike in past times, the Dems in both the House and the Senate are all speaking the same tune. It’s the GOP house an senate who are all over the board with certain factions united against the others. Hell even Mary freakin’ Landrieu was on the Senate floor, chastizing the GOP as much as she can being from Red Louisiana. Last news I heard on debt ceiling negotation was a radio report with a snippet of McConnell saying that there was progress on talks. That was followed by a snippet of Reid saying there was no progress, and indirectly saying that McConnell lied about it, and that McConnell was trying to push some partisan endgame narrative.
Newscaster said problems were GOP didn’t want to count any defense cuts as savings, still wanted another ceiling drama next year, and wanted automatic Social Security cuts if future discretionary cuts were did not meet some threshold or other.

I just got back from a fantastic meal. First course was a salad with roasted beets, peaches, greens and I don’t know what else. It was a crazy mixture and just exploded with flavor. Second course was pork on pork: pork tenderloin wrapped with bacon. Sounds too much, but it wasn’t. Perfectly done, so tender. Some kind of chocolately, caramel-y, pecan, ice cream dessert thing. Ridiculously good. Paired the whole thing with a fine Zinfandel.

The stuff I heard about automatic Social Security cuts was this afternoon. Maybe the GOP gave up on that.
And I note this is the second time since this afternoon that I heard or saw a report of of the GOP claiming a deal and the Democrats saying there was not a deal.

I think most people are assuming the President will either pull a rabbit out of a hat, or fold like a cheap suit, and the debt ceiling will be raised and life can go on pretty much as usual.
I’m beginning to think the President has absolutely nothing up his sleeve: neither a hidden ace nor a white flag of surrender. I’m beginning to think he has no idea what’s going to happen, and the only reason he isn’t breaking into a clammy sweat is because he’s No Drama Obama, with ice water in his veins. Maybe he’s shrugging and making a list of which national bills need to be paid and which parts of the US government will simply cease to exist come Wednesday.
Good-bye, national parks. Good-bye, national museums. Good-bye NOAA and NASA, CDC and NIH, FDA AND USDA.

I chaperoned a field trip for her class last fall, and on the bus, her classmates started singing songs. They got pretty bored with “Twinkle, Twinkle” and the like, and quickly moved on to pop songs. My kid knew the Taylor songs, and was pleased to be able to sing along. But then they finished those. My eyebrows shot up when one girl in her class started singing “California Girls” and knew all the words, including the “Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top” line. But I said HELL TO THE NO when some of them started singing this. And I thanked God above that my kid didn’t know the words.

And, yes, I do think that song is inappropriate for six-year-olds to sing that song. We haven’t gotten to “performative bisexuality” yet.
But, I mean, I used to, uh, well, never mind. College was fun.

@opie jeanne:
I looked over the lyrics. It’s a tasteless song about wanting sex, like the tasteless songs about sex that have been popular the last 50 years. It’s downright generic. I’m not telling her to let her kids sing it. I’m telling her to not decide based on emotion. Her kids have heard a whole lot worse than this, all the time. She herself heard worse than this when she was that age. I’m particularly saying that if she catches herself refusing her children doing anything she doesn’t think hurt her, it’s time to… think. Not react by gut, think. People making gut decisions about keeping their children innocent do a lot of damage.

@suzanne:
I feel your pain. Spent $140.00 last year to take my daughter to see the American Idol tour (yes, I know, but she was 14) She loved, loved, loved it, and, yes, me as well. The downside was that none of her AI-loving friends could go, so I had to. The things we do for love.
Of course, when I spent a similar amount to send the son to see Green Day, he had no trouble rounding up a buddy to go. That show, would have been fun.

@Loneoak: I just upgraded to Spotify as well and I’m trying to figure out how I ever lived without it.

Ed Brooke. Jacob Javits. Chuck Percy. Mark Hatfield. Margaret Chase Smith. George Aiken. Clifford Case. Hiram Fong…
It was a different world.

Um, who said I wasn’t thinking? I very deliberately try to limit the damage done by the patriarchy to my daughters. There is no scenario in which a six-year-old girl singing about “a horny free-for-all” is in any way acceptable. Christ on a cracker.

@Frankensteinbeck: I think we’ll have to agree to disagree.
I do agree with most of what you have said, but I think where we don’t agree is that thing I’ll call “age-appropriateness”: my kids got information that they needed at the level they were ready for, which was a total judgement call on my part. M
My three kids turned out ok and don’t seem to be too warped, and they did tons of stuff they thought I didn’t know about, but I wasn’t exactly angelic myself so I had a really good idea what was going on.
And try as I might, I can’t remember a song anywhere near this explicit that was being played on the radio 50 years ago. I would have been 11 and I listened to rock and roll whenever possible, usually on a transistor radio with the earphones in so my dad wouldn’t get all pissy about “that’s not music!”
This is not to say that there were no songs about sexuality and longing for sex, but most of them went over the heads of most 11-year-olds. I mean, what does 60 minutes have to do with sex? Or that football song, “Backfield in Motion”?

@suzanne: When my middle child was little and we were expecting the third, we had a baby-sitter who was 18, nice girl, great with the kids.
One day I made a joke about being ready for menopause and she had no clue what I was talking about. I very gently explained to her what it was and she was shocked to learn that someday she would stop menstruating, and she didn’t want to believe me because her parents had never told her this. I’m sure they had signed that form insisting that she not have sex ed at school, and if I’d realized that at the time I would have given her the entire story on sex. All of it.
I told her to ask her grandmother why she can’t have babies, except my phrasing was much kinder.
And I found a different sitter because I decided that it’s really stupid to entrust your kids to a low-information teenager because she only charges you $1 an hour.

The problem with Kesha is she is banal. Sex should be fun, not derivative drivel. Her lyrics are like nursery rhymes with ‘dirty’ parts added or boasts about getting drunk worked into them. I can help my kids figure out what sort of social norms she ought to be following, but this sort or aesthetic dreck saturating the culture is really poisonous.

@suzanne: She’s your kidlet. You have every fucking right to raise her how you choose. The fact that she’s emulating a well-behaved celebrity is a credit to you. And no you didn’t overreact to the Ke$ha thing.
