Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

There is one struggling party in US right now, and it’s not the Democrats.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Another missed opportunity for Jamie Dimon to just shut the fuck up.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Trump makes a mockery of the legal system and cowardly judges just sit back and let him.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

I need some advice on good pick-me-up music, since the old standby of Touhou covers isn’t working. (“Bad Apple!!” in particular, given that its lyrics can be construed as a “fuck you”.) Any advice, Balloon Juicers?

Some people in an earlier thread referred to Brad DeLongs estimate of – 0.4% GDP Fiscal 2012 on account of the debt ceiling deal (unclear how he arrived at that, he doesn’t account for it).

I thought I’d offer this second opinion (via Nate Silver, a Reuters piece):

“This will have minimal impact on the economy. The cuts are not there for the first couple of years, which really makes you wonder if they’re really going to happen at all,” said Peter Morici, an economics professor at the University of Maryland.

    From the same piece.

Troy Davig, U.S. economist at Barclays Capital, estimated that the deal would only cut $25-30 billion from government spending in the first year, which could shave about a tenth of a percentage point off economic growth.

This guy is really estimating possible impact of the as of yet unknown “second round” of deficit reduction that the committee is tasked to look at. But in the process he says 25-30B$ would mean a drag on the economy of about .1% of GDP, and what is decided for now is 22B$ in the first round so thats (according to this guy) .1% of GDP – not .4% as DeLong claimed. I’m prone to trust this guy more since his agenda is making money off of the predictions and not please emo-proggers. But YMMV….

I didn’t like the movie either. Before Katrina, any movie that “starred” NOLA, I hated! Nothing quite seemed to give my city the due it deserved. After Katrina, I find myself getting very happy whenever I see a movie filmed in NOLA. That movie with Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren called “REDS” was partly filmed in NOLA and I was more excited because I had been on the exact street, at the exact place way before Katrina.

Another terrorist enabling Senator is voting for the Debt Ceiling Bill

As I have said all along, the consequences of failing to raise the debt ceiling and defaulting on our debt would be disastrous to all Minnesotans. Unfortunately, in a game of chicken, the player most concerned about protecting the full faith and credit of the United States is put in the most difficult position.
    __
As a result, the deal that has been struck is not balanced, as I would have preferred. It does achieve the laudable goal of reducing the deficit, but does so with only cuts, even though a significant majority of Americans, including a majority of Republicans, favor closing loopholes for corporations and tax increases on the wealthiest Americans to make sure everyone is paying their fair share.
    __
Nevertheless, I will vote for this package, because defaulting would have grave economic consequences for my Minnesota constituents. The deal does protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. And it will erase some of the uncertainty confronting businesses and the markets.
    __
I hope now we can get back to our job, which is to facilitate the growth of our economy and create jobs by investing in innovation, in our infrastructure and workforce, and by making sure our children get a world-class education so they are prepared for a 21st century economy.

    @lamh34:

They did do a TV remake of “Gypsy” with Bette Midler, but IIRC the feature film with Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood is better.

ETA: Also, too, the lyrics are by the brilliant Stephen Sondheim.

And Sondheim is God the FSM. No, wait, FSM worships Sondheim. We should have a thread about Sondheim.

Unfortunately, I’ve heard that the optics of President Obama’s debt ceiling victory don’t compare that favorably with the optics of his Bush tax cut expiration victory. However, I believe this situation can be repaired with another historic speech, don’t you?

For those who like to talk abut how Americans want jobs…Democratic-leaning Nassau County, New York just voted by a 14 point margin to reject $400 million in public funding toward building a new hockey arena and commercial center that would have provided thousands of jobs. They weren’t willing to pay an extra $38 a year in taxes for it.

Earlier they voted against allowing PRIVATE MONEY to do it,

Night shift checking in (belatedly). Not much to say. Just wanted to be here with my Juice peeps.

Exhausting day of bus rides and walking around in 97° heat. Left the man-cave at 7:20 a.m. and didn’t get home until 5:00 p.m. Dentist (couple of crowns and ongoing major work to realign my bite after jaw being broken a few years ago), then dermatologist (skin cancer biopsies–small bits of me flying off to the lab, yay!).

Bright spot was that I stopped at Fahrney’s, a high-end pen store that I have long wanted to visit, which happens to be close to the dermatologist’s office, and browsed for a while in their cool, cool air conditioning. I got a handful of Mont Blanc pens that I inherited from my father rehabbed, restored and refilled. It made me happy to think of them being used again.

Wasn’t able to follow too much of the debt ceiling debacle, for which I am grateful. I guess we will see tomorrow (Tuesday) what exactly hits the fan.

Late commenting on this thread because my net connection went on the fritz. (Curse you, Celcom Broadband!)
When AL asked me yesterday about saying “Ramadan Mubarak”, i wasn’t aware yet that Egyptians had soured on hearing his name in any context. Me, I don’t mind. After all, I’m not Egyptian.
