I’m much too old to be watching cartoons, but I discovered Avatar: The Last Airbender this week and it is fuckin’ awesome.
That is all.

Ooh. I’m not much of an Earth Wind and Fire fan.

Impact of the Deal on growth and jobs…

Extreme brownie points that DougJ has posted “Reasons”, a song I didn’t know until I was doing the quiet storm shift in Carbondale.

Markets closed up today. Clearly, that means Obama is the best president ever, right?
Yutsano
Avatar is a fucking amazing and deep saga for Nickelodeon at the time. The live action movie was the worst thing to happen to that story.

I’ve heard a rumor that Ryan Adams is scheduled to play at a smallish venue nearby, but I can’t find details dammit! Can I blame firebaggers for this?

A music-themed open thread. Perfect – I gots tickets to sell.
If any BJers (or friends of BJers) in the Bay Area have an interest in seeing Willie Nelson, I have two tickets to sell for their show at the Wells Fargo Center in Santa Rosa on September 14th. Section C (orchestra right), row R, seats 5 and 6. Bought them as an anniversary gift for my parents, then remembered today (ten days prior to the anniversary, thankfully) that my mom is leaving for a vacation the same day as the show. I’m just happy to avoid the awkwardness that would have occurred had she had to remind me when they opened them…
So yeah. $145 for the pair, cash only, blah blah. I get enough spam and annoyance in my real email, so you can reach me at my fake email at tabitharosethornburg AT gmail DOT com.

@Baud: I think that judgment is reserved for flight-suit enhanced Presidents.

@Yutsano: I’d heard about the movie and watched about five minutes of it on Netflix. I can’t even. Seriously. I lost my ability to even.

@MikeJ: Rachel did a hit piece on the deal last night. I was ok when she was talking about the predicted job losses from the spending cuts, but she lost me when she started tacking on job losses from other actions that were not part of deal, on the theory that they should have been part of the deal, I guess. To be honest, it was a little Fox-News-ish for my taste.

They’re saying Italy is on the verge of immanent default. They might not be too big to fail, but they’re too big to fail without taking the Euro with them.

I’ve been right about so much over the last 10 years that I’m thinking of *gulp* starting a blog again

@Yutsano: Hey Yutsy, didja see this today? A USMC carrier, chock full of dawgs for you.

Matt Damon tells Reason reporter off about teachers and why they’re valuable.
This is the best example of the country we live in.
Read the comments.
And at other links where this video was at, they’re just as bad.
Never mind the Crossroads ads that are soaking the airwaves, maybe because I live outside of DC, I don’t know.
It’s going to be an uphill slog.

@AAA Bonds: Are you going firebagger or Obot?

Seattle? Must be Seafair time! Why is the sky that funny color; more specifically, why is it any color at all?

If you’re gonna post EW&F you might want to check out this album. A couple members were in both groups. I saw em play a reunion gig at the Field Museum back in ’97.

Oops. Sorry, DougJ — as so many commentors have said in the past, I gotta learn to type faster, because I swear this wasn’t visible on the dashboard when I started mine!

christ, are we gonna have to listen to nonstop whimpering the next 18 months over this very mild debt deal? I mean we all have assholes and opinions, but it’s done, and life moves on/ And we will all die poor and fighting over a can of tuna, or things will get better. But Obbbbaaaaaaaaama! Oh noes, he sold us out. He’s a republican, blah blah blah. And so are his supporters. Blah blah blah.
We all suffered through the wails and moans here from concerned progs or ratfuckers or whatever they were, how Obama was toast in the 2008 campaign, and America wouldn’t elect a black man for president ..
Blahh Blah Blah

What are you doing typing while yer driving? Here in the Garden State, they pull you over, give you a ticket and a stern lecture for texting while operating a motor vehicle.
Yutsano
@MikeJ: I can see it docked from my office. I have stuff to accomplish over the next few days, but they should stick through the weekend. Woof. :)

@Baud:
Yo. I love me some Rachel, but sometimes….I don’t know. She get’s full of herself or something and goes on a tear that basically seems to be saying ‘If you haven’t done this specific thing it’s because you’re evil or stupid and there can’t possibly be any other explanation than that’. Which bothers me because I know she’s smarter than that. It makes me think it must be an ego thing. She’s so sure she’s right she get’s offended anyone would ever do anything else. And she likes getting offended because it let’s her pimp how right she is.
Eh, I’ll always love that gal, but sometimes, when certain things come up, I know I’ll be skippin’ her show that night.
Also:
Fuck yes! A truly epic show. And don’t diss cartoons, a good anime is my life blood.

@Maude:
LOL. I don’t even believe in talking on the phone while driving! WordPress ‘dashboard’, the virtual machinery behind the front page — I checked to see when the last Open Thread was, saw it had been some time & almost 200 comments, the topmost post had been up for almost 4 hours, so I started slapping something together. DougJ obviously was doing something similar at the same time, and beat me to the front page. Didn’t want anybody thinking I was trying to ‘bump him down’, it was purely a coincidence!
Ol' Dirty DougJ
@Anne Laurie:
No problem, I end up doing this all the time too.

It ain’t a quiet storm without some Grover.
Pongo
No one ever posts enough E,W & F. Just saw them in concert with Chicago (weird combo, I know) in Phoenix a year or so ago and they were AWESOME for a bunch of old dudes.
Ol' Dirty DougJ
Not really, early Chicago was great, “This Is Only The Beginning” and stuff.

Happiest.Music.Ever. I’m convinced that the 70’s were the absolute best time to be young. The pill, 18 drinking age, Vietnam winding down, classic rock acts performed everywhere when it was new, great movies, no AIDS, pre-Reagan, cheap pot, Nixon resigning, peace love and understanding. Oh well.
Anne Laurie
@Robin G.: If you want more like Avatar, I suggest Cardcaptor Sakura and Angelic Layer, which may even be available from the YA department of your local library. Two more “kiddie” shows that are a lot more grown-up than most top-ranked sitcoms…
Obliquely, since these are actual Japanese anime, it’s kind of fascinating to notice the cultural differences — for instance, same-sex attraction is just another facet of the social spectrum, but being in a wheelchair is so “horrible” that it’s something to be hidden even from one’s family!

@Pongo: Was Phillip Bailey still with them. What a voice!

@Cat Lady: The 70s were a blast for this teenager (back then)
