Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Second rate reporter says what?

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

It’s a new day. Light all those Biden polls of young people on fire and throw away the ashes.

Let there be snark.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

The lights are all blinking red.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

I don’t post enough Earth, Wind, and Fire Youtubes here so here’s something to watch.

Extreme brownie points that DougJ has posted “Reasons”, a song I didn’t know until I was doing the quiet storm shift in Carbondale.

Avatar is a fucking amazing and deep saga for Nickelodeon at the time. The live action movie was the worst thing to happen to that story.

I’ve heard a rumor that Ryan Adams is scheduled to play at a smallish venue nearby, but I can’t find details dammit! Can I blame firebaggers for this?

A music-themed open thread. Perfect – I gots tickets to sell.

If any BJers (or friends of BJers) in the Bay Area have an interest in seeing Willie Nelson, I have two tickets to sell for their show at the Wells Fargo Center in Santa Rosa on September 14th. Section C (orchestra right), row R, seats 5 and 6. Bought them as an anniversary gift for my parents, then remembered today (ten days prior to the anniversary, thankfully) that my mom is leaving for a vacation the same day as the show. I’m just happy to avoid the awkwardness that would have occurred had she had to remind me when they opened them…

So yeah. $145 for the pair, cash only, blah blah. I get enough spam and annoyance in my real email, so you can reach me at my fake email at tabitharosethornburg AT gmail DOT com.

@MikeJ: Rachel did a hit piece on the deal last night. I was ok when she was talking about the predicted job losses from the spending cuts, but she lost me when she started tacking on job losses from other actions that were not part of deal, on the theory that they should have been part of the deal, I guess. To be honest, it was a little Fox-News-ish for my taste.

christ, are we gonna have to listen to nonstop whimpering the next 18 months over this very mild debt deal? I mean we all have assholes and opinions, but it’s done, and life moves on/ And we will all die poor and fighting over a can of tuna, or things will get better. But Obbbbaaaaaaaaama! Oh noes, he sold us out. He’s a republican, blah blah blah. And so are his supporters. Blah blah blah.

We all suffered through the wails and moans here from concerned progs or ratfuckers or whatever they were, how Obama was toast in the 2008 campaign, and America wouldn’t elect a black man for president ..

    @Baud:
Yo. I love me some Rachel, but sometimes….I don’t know. She get’s full of herself or something and goes on a tear that basically seems to be saying ‘If you haven’t done this specific thing it’s because you’re evil or stupid and there can’t possibly be any other explanation than that’. Which bothers me because I know she’s smarter than that. It makes me think it must be an ego thing. She’s so sure she’s right she get’s offended anyone would ever do anything else. And she likes getting offended because it let’s her pimp how right she is.

Eh, I’ll always love that gal, but sometimes, when certain things come up, I know I’ll be skippin’ her show that night.

    Also:

I’m much too old to be watching cartoons, but I discovered Avatar: The Last Airbender this week and it is fuckin’ awesome.

Fuck yes! A truly epic show. And don’t diss cartoons, a good anime is my life blood.

LOL. I don’t even believe in talking on the phone while driving! WordPress ‘dashboard’, the virtual machinery behind the front page — I checked to see when the last Open Thread was, saw it had been some time & almost 200 comments, the topmost post had been up for almost 4 hours, so I started slapping something together. DougJ obviously was doing something similar at the same time, and beat me to the front page. Didn’t want anybody thinking I was trying to ‘bump him down’, it was purely a coincidence!

Happiest.Music.Ever. I’m convinced that the 70’s were the absolute best time to be young. The pill, 18 drinking age, Vietnam winding down, classic rock acts performed everywhere when it was new, great movies, no AIDS, pre-Reagan, cheap pot, Nixon resigning, peace love and understanding. Oh well.

@Robin G.: If you want more like Avatar, I suggest Cardcaptor Sakura and Angelic Layer, which may even be available from the YA department of your local library. Two more “kiddie” shows that are a lot more grown-up than most top-ranked sitcoms…

Obliquely, since these are actual Japanese anime, it’s kind of fascinating to notice the cultural differences — for instance, same-sex attraction is just another facet of the social spectrum, but being in a wheelchair is so “horrible” that it’s something to be hidden even from one’s family!
