Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

The willow is too close to the house.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

People are complicated. Love is not.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Everybody saw this coming.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

I really should read my own blog.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Song of the week

From Can’t Explain….

Dolly Parton, “Down From Dover” (1970)
I’m pretty sure I can trust that the Balloon Juice crowd knows the talents and values of Dolly Parton, so I’m going to skip the “better than you know” qualifications I ordinarily feel constrained to make at this point. Her target market audience may, I have a bad feeling, be the kind of people Matt Taibbi identified as constituents in the Tea Party base, riding around on Medicare-funded scooters and screeching about getting government out of healthcare, but never mind. She’s the real deal. This is probably my favorite by her, and certainly the genuine sense of sadness it evokes matches my own watching what went down in national politics this week, and worrying what comes next. Not that I’m trying to make an allegory out of it or anything.

Ethos: “Just Because I’m a Woman”

    While I love the fact that anybody can say anything at this place and that repercussions are rare, it seems like every comments thread is becoming infested with weak-sauce trolls. I don’t have a proposed solution here, just an equally weak-sauce observation.

    Seconded on her talent and depth being lost on most, likely including a large proportion of her fans. I’d pit her in a debate against ANY constructivist/Randian re. the innate value and dignity of the working poor. A viewpoint one is literally never exposed to, these days.

    @ed drone:
    Let us pause in life’s pleasures and count its many tears,
    While we all sup sorrow with the poor;
    There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears;
    Oh Hard times come again no more.
    Chorus:

    Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
    Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
    Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
    Oh hard times come again no more.

    While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay,
    There are frail forms fainting at the door;
    Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say
    Oh hard times come again no more.
    (Chorus)

    There’s a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away,
    With a worn heart whose better days are o’er:
    Though her voice would be merry, ’tis sighing all the day,
    Oh hard times come again no more.
    (Chorus)

    Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave,
    Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore
    Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave
    Oh hard times come again no more.

    The first time I ever saw Dolly was with Porter on one of those cheesy shows from the Grand ‘Ol Opry back in the mid 70’s, when the uniform of late teenhood in the Northeast suburbs was army jackets, pea coats, Frye boots, flannel shirts and navy surplus jeans. For women. I had never ever seen anything like her in the world I inhabited, and wanted to dismiss her right away as antithetical to everything I believed in (women’s lib!). She’s just too unique and has such a great story and her explanation for how she chose her look and her perseverance really taught me a lesson about books, covers, etc. She’s wonderful, and that’s a great song.

    Since we’re reaching back in time, here’s young Aretha with a different take on heartbreak. Prepare for goosebumps.

    Ok, it’s modest, but it’s going to be politically more difficult than most things for the tea party to quash:

    Among the president’s proposals is a Returning Heroes and Wounded Warrior Tax Credit, which would provide businesses that hire veterans a tax break, varying in size depending on how long the newly hired veteran has been unemployed and whether he or she has a disability.
    Under the president’s proposal the credits would range from $2,400 for hiring a short-term unemployed veteran to $9,600 for hiring a long-term unemployed and disabled veteran.

    The target is 100K jobs out of 13.9M unemployed, so it won’t do a lot, but it might help identify where more programs can be passed.

    Not too far OT, Randi Rhodes was talking about an article “Republicans fit the profile of a classic abuser” by Julie Driscoll. The behaviors abusers and the far right tea party Republicans share is striking.

    No compromise ever, his way or his other way.
    Never wrong, look what you made me do.
    Uses fear tactics, bullying, threats and intimidation to get his way.
    Never shares responsibility for breakdown of relationships.
    Uses the kids as pawns.
    Winning at all cost no matter who gets harmed in the process.

    Driscoll said a classic abuser uses sexually derogatory slurs against his victim and compared that to Republicans using racial slurs against the President.

    I hadn’t made the connection with the Republican bullying and spousal abusers but I think Driscoll has it right.

    @bemused:
    I have, and I’ve mentioned it before. I use narcissistic personality disorder as a predictive model for the current GOP and particularly the Tea Party, and it’s AMAZINGLY good. Narcissism, alcoholism, and domestic abuse are all tightly associated with each other. Notice the ‘I’m always right, even when I’m wrong’ and ‘My personal rights and privileges are sacred, and no one else has any because they infringe on my right to get my way’ and ‘Rudeness is defined as not giving me what I want’ elements. That’s narcissistic personality disorder, right there.

    DougJ at the top:
    As for what comes next, I’ve been wondering about that. How many hostage scenarios are left? I know the debt ceiling deal included a budget deal that removed the next crisis. What absolutely crucial legislation, like a budget, do we know will have to be passed before the election?

    My ex girlfriend was a recording studio engineer and thus ended up meeting/working with a lot of artists, who varied wildly in genre, disposition, and talent. She was never shy about praising the good ones and ripping the bad ones, but never was her praise more effusive than when she talked about Dolly Parton. She said that ol’ Dolly is a genuinely amazing singing talent and, on top of that, “probably the sweetest person in the world.”

    The behaviors abusers and the far right tea party Republicans share is striking.

    “Look what you made me do” is classic.

    I had noticed some similarities but when they bubble up into the public domain I’m frequently hit with something akin to flashbacks and by the time I have myself together again, the opportunity to comment has passed.

    Sigh.

    But you’re quite correct. Abusive motherfuckers.

    Marianne Faithfull does a superb (yet completely different from Dolly’s) rendition of “Down From Dover.” She brings a great world-weariness to the song with that tobacco-cured, whiskey-marinated voice of hers.

    It’s on her magnificent 2009 all-covers album “Easy Come Easy Go.” Not to be missed, that one…

    @Linda Featheringill:
    Driscoll says abuse is a character disorder that is learned social behavior. Another reason to hate Fox and crowd. They’ve done a bang up job of perpetuating the behavior among their groupies and creating a new batch of abusers.
    Now when I read these teaparty goons’ letters to newspapers, I’m going to be wondering if every one of them is a spousal abuser or an abused spouse.

    @Ol’ Dirty DougJ:

    Night shift checking in early (after a rare day shift).

    No need to temper the love for Dolly Parton, DougJ. She’s a gifted performer and a hell of a songwriter. Wish I could find the YouTube clip of “Jolene” with just her and (incredible) fingerpicking guitar accompaniment, but I’ll submit this: Alison Krauss doing it at some awards thing (with Parton in the audience).

    Highly recommend Parton’s album The Grass Is Blue.

    Having said all that, I just got home from work, and what I really need is a frosty and some phat bass, old-school: Boz Scaggs, “Lowdown.”

    I have “always loved” Dolly. I also really like her duets with other artists, they are some of my favorites. She just keeps on and on singing. Her voice hasn’t changed from day one, still just perfect.
