Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Ron DeSantis, the grand wizard, oops, governor of FL.

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

There is one struggling party in US right now, and it’s not the Democrats.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

The lights are all blinking red.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself. We’re allowed to grow past that.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Trump’s legal defense is going to be a dumpster fire inside a clown car on a derailing train.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

So… how hot is it, in your neighborhood? Mr. Cole?

I keep getting to these A/C threads late, so happy to be near the top on this one.

#1: Wrap a cold, wet towel around your neck. Make sure you’re covering the veins at the side of your neck. Your body may get hot, but when your brain does you can stroke out.

    Better:

#2: The kdaugs (being Texans) have these. Come in all different brands, designs, prices, et.al., but basically crystals that hold cold water for hours. Soak it for 1/2 hour in ice water, and you can do 105 comfortably for about 3 hours. Just get one that wraps around your neck like a tie.

Keep the brain cool, and drink water, and you can push through no A/C until it gets fixed.

It’s 57 here, like it’s been for just about all ‘summer’ now. This has to be one of the suckiest summers on the Oregon coast I’ve ever seen, one day in the 80’s and a few in the 70’s. Mostly mid-50’s to mid-60’s, day and night. Fog and/or clouds, almost daily.

We have to go inland to find any heat…lol!

I learned to hate air conditioning with a passion, back when my journo’s job made me spend my days and nights in offices and hotel rooms with the A/C set to arctic temperatures. Even though I live in the tropics, I can only stand A/C when I’m riding in a car.

New York is a long state and decided to put its interior cities on rivers and has connected its cities using those same river routes. Those rivers aren’t straight and run southwest when you want to go northwest. It also put large rocks in the middle of itself, right about where you want to turn left.

Are we still talking about the heat? My mom is from Ireland where it never gets above 85.

When I was a little girl growing up poor (what they now call blue collar; and back then called “middle class’ BWA HA HA) we had no AC and one fan and my mom would come and take the fan from me when she went to bed. I roasted in that attic room.

I somehow got a college degree and moved to a one room apt in NYC (Queens, that is, not Manhattan). I had no money, and gobs of tuition debt. The first thing I bought was an AC. It cost twice my monthly rent and I charged it on a Sears CC that I have no idea how I got. But wow. That was my induction into adulthood. Oh yes you can have it if you work hard enough.

    From Krugman

I’m fairly sure that if and when we get the whole story here, it will turn out that S&P was being political here, trying to do someone a favor — and it just wasn’t going to let facts get in the way of the downgrade it wanted.

That’s what I thought as well. Some big S&P client who hates Obama and has hot-tubed with Romney got S&P to ratfuck the economy. Where are warrantless wiretaps when you need them.

I’ve been rocking the shorts for almost a week here in Seattle, but then again, I’ve been known to do that while it was snowing. Seriously though, Seattle has been lucky to get almost a whole weeks worth of sunshine. It’s disturbing the locals, they are all hiding under their sunglasses.

P.S. Congrats. It looks like a lot of fun.

@Yutsano: Hi, honey, I’m home! It was warm and muggy here today. Ugh. Now it’s cool and pleasant. Yay. How you be?

Yup. Upgrading my server from Fedora 13 to 15. Backed up all of the game servers, forums and databases, transferred them to the backup system and am now running the final F13 updates prior to updating to F15.

I normally dump the previous install and set a clean system up but this time I decided to see if it will survive a direct OS update. I have specially compiled packages on the system so I’m sure that I’m still going to have fun…lol! I may still wipe it clean as usual but I thought it would be an interesting exercise.

You get my post in response to your tranny question in the other thread?

@Odie Hugh Manatee: I did, thanks. This is a fairly new tranny and clutch. I have a hurst floor shifter that I put in 25 years ago. It’s a small hump floor and, as a result, the shifter arms would not go in the proper way. I flipped them and have a reverse pattern. 1st up, 2nd over and back and 3d straight up (reverse straight back from 1st). There seems to be a good bit of left-right play in the shifter and if I put pressure to the right as I go into 3d it’s fine. I drove it for almost 20 years with no synchro in 1st and I was really happy when I found this tranny and don’t want to screw it up.

    Odie Hugh Manatee

    August 9, 2011 at 6:13 am

The reversed pattern is fine as long as you make sure that each gear fully disengages (to center, between gears) while another is engaged. A sloppy shifter can make for crappy shifts too so I would look into rebuilding it. At the very least, take it apart, clean it and lube, reassemble and adjust.

If it’s a known good tranny then keep it that way! :)

Getting almost balmy here in NoVa, after (officially) the hottest July on record. Going to “only” 93° today, then the highs taper off into the mid- and high 80s over the next 10 days. Me likey!

Currently 75°, and I’m about to head out for another rare day shift. Actually, I have a week of day shifts and then a lone closing shift on Saturday. My boss is on vacation for three weeks, so I have been summoned from the dark side to take up the slack. Sort of disorienting.

I think it’s about 75 degrees here with the highs supposed to be in the 90’s with ONE MEELLLION percent humidity.

I’ve hated this summer. My garden is pretty much dead, the few veggies I’ve harvested haven’t tasted good at all,and nearly everything that’s still alive looks like it wants to die. It’s too hot to do anything outside after about 9 am. The school district has cancelled all sports practices held outside for the forseeable future(which is pretty unheard of around here),and they’re telling people to send the kids to school with water bottles on the bus because most of the buses have no a/c. Bring on the Fall damnit.

You’re only supposed to discuss SS privatization after a nice 10% run-up in the market. You’re also only supposed to discuss global warming between January and March, preferably after a blizzard. Please consult your citizenship guidebook for more details. Thanks, and have a super non-soshulist day.

I’m pondering flying into Toronto to avoid all the crappy connections, but anyone know how much time I’ll get stuck at the border?

As Svensker said, you can get jammed up in a line of trucks and wait forever or sometimes just breeze through. This depends somewhat on time of day but occasionally things grind to a halt for no apparent reason.
In any case, when crossing the US/CAN border, have your docs in order & don’t screw around. Voice of experience here. Things have changed…
