Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

This blog will pay for itself.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

American History and Black History can not be separated.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you don’t.

Come on, man.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

This fight is for everything.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

In after Baud. Damn.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

Dinner:

It would have looked better, but I had a scotch (or maybe two) and got a little lazy with the basil chiffonade and almost lost a damned finger, so it kind of looks like a clump of cow cud on top of the linguini because that was the best I could do with three paper towels wrapped around my finger. The sauce was good- cooked down tomatoes from the garden and some onions and garlic and a can of fire roasted tomatoes, added some heavy cream near the end. Veal was ok but under seasoned. The salad was good, but not picture worthy.

ALSO TOO, CHECK OUT THEM FORMICA COUNTERS. REAL AMERICAN HERE!

Sorry, now that there’s an open thread I’m going to repost this comment from below, because I know there are some pre-Code fans out there: Pre-Code movie with Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart and Joan Blondell and Edward Arnold tonight on TCM, 9:45 PM Eastern. If I’m going to have to live in the 1930s, I’m going to live in the 1930s when they had good movies.

When is that going up as one of the rotating blog titles?

But, the pizza looks pretty good. No need for apologies.

Alright guys, I know some of ya’ll are movie buffs, and I’m trying to find this movie, but I can’t remember the damn title. I believe it includes Ellen Burstyn (or someone who looks just like her???). I think it’s a British film. The basics of the plot: this woman who like this chief researcher or doctor or something some how or another meets her younger teenage self who sees the staid, boring life that the older her has and she wants to change it so that she doesn’t become a lonely ole woman in her old age (I think the ole lady is played by Burstyn or someone like her). I know I watched it on TV, but I can’t figure out if its was a made for tv movie or not. I tried looking up Ellen Burystyn on IMDB, but none of her films listed are the ones I’m looking for.

So any ideas….please help me out, It’s driving me crazy.

Can’t help but notice that nearly ALL of John’s blog posts lately prominently mention his doing a substantial amount of drinking. I’m not knocking a glass of wine, a beer or touch of whiskey now and then or among friends, but I cannot help notice that John’s posts didn’t used to mention drinking or getting a bit soused nearly so often.

    (1) Dude, dredge and bread the motherfucken veal, like this:

    http://freethoughtblogs.com/physioprof/2011/05/14/veal-milanese-with-risotto-milanese/

    (2) You should stop the pasta about one minute before it’s done, and then finish it in the pan with your sauce, adding some of the pasta water to bind and thicken it. You wouldn’t believe how much better it is that way, for de minimus fucken effort!

I made my version of a chicken piperade, it wasn’t a real piperade because I just used yellow and red peppers cuz the husband hates green peppers, but it was well seasoned and I used fresh cherry tomatoes and it was actually really fucking awesome. And now that I mention it, I’m most proud of the fact that I cooked this dish by going through the fridge and freezer and seeing what I had on hand and I didn’t consult a recipe, I kinda just made it up and it was GREAT.

The very thoughtful blogger Lance Mannion on Sully’s proclamation of virtue for not having a credit card, being a “fiscal conservative” and all:

“ I haven’t had a credit card for years, because I actually live like a fiscal conservative.

We’re sure you do, Andrew. But you know what else you live like?

A man with a six-figure income and no children.

Getting a little tired of being told by the well-to-do strolling down Park Avenue that the rest of us hoi polloi need to share in some more sacrifice and tighten our belts another notch.

Sullivan also thinks we need to raise the age of retirement. Again not advice we want to hear from someone who can go on vacation for weeks at a time seemingly whenever he wants and who has a job he can do and do well until he’s 90, if his health allows.

One of the things that drives us nuts about Sullivan is that it’s all so personal with him. I don’t mean he thinks it’s all about him. I mean that sometimes—a lot of times—he doesn’t seem able to imagine that not everybody in the United States is a gay ex-pat Brit living in Washington, D.C. whose big disappointment in life recently was being turned down for a mortgage on a second home.

Yeah. Sullivan didn’t get to buy a summer house in Provincetown. The heart bleeds.”

Lance continues, to make an interesting point about the advantages the liberal/progressive blogosphere once had; that conservative bloggers are often terrible writers, and uninterested in culture, except as propaganda. Whereas on the liberal side, there were the wonks, the serious policy analysts, but also a great deal of well-written cultural commentary, besides politics. That could have been persuasive for the progressive side: “Come for the movie reviews, stay for the bar graphs”! But things went differently, and he acknowledges Sully as unusual for his side, being a “personal” blogger. Anyway, a good read.

CNN is reporting that Reid’s choices for the super committee are Baucus, Murray, and Kerry, which means Harry Reid just fucked lefties everywhere and once again nodded to his plutocrat backers.

Max will vote with the Republicans on no revenue and once again America will be screwed. Thanks Harry

    Thinking on your question.

    Baucus is a deplorable choice.

Not a surprising one, but a terrible one.

I think it would make a lot of sense to add credible retired senators to the commission, maybe as discussants.

I voted at 9:00 AM and stood in line with many fat old folks, probably fox news addicts. Every one of them on social security, not talking much, but when there was a snippet of conversation the words “check book” or “debt” probably came up. Not a good sign.

We have a good friend and neighbor who watches fox exclusively, and persists in sending me forwarded emails about Obama as a socialist marxist islamist, you get the picture. These people live in another world, and it has nothing to do with what we view as reality.

I’m about to think they deserve the life the republicans will be handing them, but they are so stupid they will no doubt be told by fox that it’s all the democrats’ fault, and they will believe it.

You can’t win against a massive lying machine, and that’s what fox has created in the last few years.
