Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

No one could have predicted…

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

How stupid are these people?

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

American history and black history cannot be separated.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

… so do yourself a favor, check out this brewing company website, but the first time, click that you aren’t 21. And if you’re a beer fan, maybe you could reward them financially for their awesomeness.

I don’t understand. They’re a small (nano) brewery. There are literally hundreds of such breweries across the US, all worthy of our support as beer drinkers. Hell, there are dozens in my town alone.

Why are we singling this particular one out for accolades?

I’ve had the Winter Solstice and the Green Tea Ale at a local tasting. Both were pretty good, and I bought a couple of 6 packs of the Winter Solstice.

Does anyone know what version of that song is? I hear the “original” 9more popular and thus gets air play) and I still don’t know what the name is, or who does either version.

I hear ya. Really I do. But have to admit, I’m kinda sorta ambivalent about banning her. Her habit of pestering front-pagers and fellow commenters for attention is incredibly tiresome. But on a good day (I admit they’re rare), she can add something of value to the conversation, and I’d not be keen to lose that.

Besides, I get an amazing amount of sympathy from fellow Balloon Juice commenters when she picks on me, and I’m not keen to lose that either. ;-)

When reading m-chan’s obsessive stream-of-consciousness word salad, is anyone else reminded of the internet posts by Jared Loughner that got dug up after that incident?

Yes. It may be harsh, but reading his word salad after the fact was remarkably similar in tone and in infatuation with nonsensical topics/details, not to mention puzzling in the same fashion. I’m not saying MC, SM etc is going to shoot or harm anyone, but she could stand to benefit from professional help.

I think we should actually talk about beer in this thread.

I’m about to start all-grain brewing. With it, I’m also planning on diving into the deep end of making my own recipes, as up until now, I’ve only done recipes provided by the local homebrew shop. Any other homebrewers around that know a thing or two about calculating efficiency? I sort of feel like what I’ve read about it is giving me some incomplete knowledge.

another mini-micro, that sells overpriced overhyped, poorly made beer by jacking up the alcohol content to hide the lack of other merits while maintaining the faddish ethos.

someday, when its safe for the devout trendlies to disavow their prior held convictions and piety, we are going to look back on this and it will all seem funny.

This brought back horrible memories of taking the Filmation “test” for animators in the ’80’s. They gave you a raft of He-Man key drawings that you had to in-between– and unless you had no idea how animation “works,” you’d pass it. Sort of explains He-Man’s basic “look”, don’t it? I asked one of the animation grunts working there “what’s the deal with this “test?” He rolled his eyes, and said “Forget the test. If you have two hands and can run a xerox machine, they’ll probably hire you.”

Am I missing something about the site? It’s some local brewery which is brewing beer but isn’t open for business yet. The website doesn’t seem particularly awful to me. Maybe I’m missing something.

But some of the best beer in the world is being brewed now in the American Midwest by places like Three Floyds and Goose Island. Some things are better than they were “when I was a boy.”

get some software. I’ve been using ProMash for 7 or so years and love it, although I can’t get it to run on my new Win7-64 laptop.

if you want to calculate it by hand, here’s an example to walk you through it. Let’s say you’re using a Pilsner malt that has a potential starting gravity (SG) of 1.037. For a five gallon batch, five pounds of malt at 100% efficiency would give you a SG of that same 1.037… since nobody can actually get 100%, you have to adjust that downwards. Let’s take 75% efficiency as a starting point, so multiply 37 by 0.75, which gives you 28, or a 1.028 potential SG…

to work it backwards, let’s say your style calls for a SG of 1.050: 50 gravity points divided by your 0.75 efficiency is 66.7 potential gravity points, times your five gallons is 333, divided by your grain potential gravity points (37), means you need 9 pounds of grain…

    clear as mud?

@Sentient Puddle Efficiency is what you get after you’ve made the beer and you see how you’ve done. You have to kind of wing it at first until you get a track record on your own individual setup. 67% was the assumed efficiency to plug in until I knew better.

there seems to be a ton of them, any trip to a beer store will yield a ton of 40 dollar plus per case, over alcohol, small batch with odd and provocative sounding beer companies, and brands. it seems like all the hipster beer places are loaded with the inventory.

its beer, its supposed to be low %alc, if you want something stronger step into some wine or liquor. i hate it that beer got pretentions.

@Fucen Pneumatic Fuck Wrench Tarmal: I’m guessing, then, that you haven’t had the opportunity to try a number of these beers. And while some beers are absurdly over-priced, most are no worse than a cheap-ish bottle of wine.
