Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

All hail the time of the bunny!

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Anyone else around here feel left in the dark when Cole posts an Atrios-style one-liner with a link and those of us with hypervigilant filters on their work stations don’t know quite what’s going on because the link is blocked? Sure, I do have my filter-free smart phone, but nothing says “slacker!” like pokin’ around your Android (or what have you) at your desk. At least I can let a work-station browser peek out from behind a worksheet to give me the cover of plausible productivity.

EDIT: OK, Googled it. O-bam-eo. Towering (t)wit of our times, that Limbaugh.

Barack is of mixed parentage. He is biracial. His color is medium brown, depending on how much sun he gets. And he has physical characteristics indicative of his ancestors on both sides. Barack Obama’s parents were identified and described well before anybody voted for the nominee or for the office of the president in 2008.

    What is Rush’s point?

The Secret Service is indeed buying the buses, because modifying leased buses with the necessary security and communications upgrades is, over the long haul (ten year expected service life), more expensive than having a couple of buses (which the eventual GOP nominee will have access to, btw) built custom with all those things deemed necessary by the Secret Service.

@Dennis SGMM: Had to look for it, but here is the back story.
The bus, one of two acquired by the Secret Service earlier this year, is government property and will be part of the “protective fleet” used by the Secret Service to transport any official, dignitary, presidential candidate or protectee, officials said.

Its code name when the president is aboard is “Stagecoach,” sources said.

The bus purchases were long overdue additions to the fleet because the agency was never satisfied with the old practice of renting buses and retrofitting them with added security, Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told ABC News in April.

“Designing our own vehicle really affords us a level of security that we can’t achieve by leasing a bus and outfitting it with temporary equipment,” Donovan said in the interview.

    (snip)

Should the Republican presidential nominee in 2012 want to hit the road, he or she will be able to campaign in one as well, Donovan said.

I am right there with you on the existence of the listeners as the problem. Let’s assume the larger number for the sake of discussion.

If there were no Rush Limbaugh, would the number of Americans who believe and act as his audience does shrink? Or would we still have 20 million ignorant, right-wing bigots who would be a potential audience for someone just like Rush Limbaugh?

Is there anything that anyone can do that would reduce that 20 million or cause them to believe and act any differently?

  55. 55.

    Villago Delenda Est

    August 17, 2011 at 7:09 pm

    @Dennis SGMM:

One of the reasons Pelosi “demanded” a new, more expensive airplane, is that she has the unmitigated gall to live in California, not in Illinois, like Denny the Hutt did, and so required a larger, more expensive airframe to make the trip non-stop. Pelosi would have been happy with the plane Denny had, even with a stopover to refuel, but her security people (who were Denny’s security people, I might add) insisted that she had to fly nonstop.

So, more wingtard bullshit. It’s what they do.

@Dennis SGMM: Probably not. Range is a factor in the Air Force’s selection of aircraft for this purpose, and Boehner’s home district in Ohio is a lot closer than Pelosi’s in CA. Of course, getting all kinds of pissy about it and pretending this was Pelosi’s (or Obama’s) decision is easy to to do when you want to.

Besides, Boehner’s a white man, so it’s legitimate for him to hold the office and use the perks.

I sincerely and regretfully doubt it. My (biased) observation is that over the years the divide has grown wider. I was sufficiently naive in the Sixties to believe that the passage of the Civil Rights Act would begin some healing. It didn’t. This country was colonized by people who were exclusionists and parts of it have never really abandoned that notion.

    @James E. Powell:

Is there anything that anyone can do that would reduce that 20 million or cause them to believe and act any differently?

Well, people believe and act within the social norms that they’re exposed. Rush has become a social norm by being given public airwaves and by having a large national audience. Take that away and remove this kind of speech from the public arena, and people will believe and act differently.

This is the flipside of the ‘deranged lunatic’ argument for folks like Jared Loughner and Anders Breivik – yes, they may be unstable and suggestive, but that doesn’t mean we need to feed them this kind of stuff. They aren’t random actors when they act along lines of reasoning that are clearly spelled out by various public figures like Rush. Eliminate those lines of reasoning and they might do other things, but then, they may not either.

Who do you think you are trying to kid Cole. You voted for Bush twice. I have no doubt you could be persuaded to vote for Perry like a lot of other idiots will be.

Anyone who voted for Bush twice has got to be way up there on the gullible scale.

Oh, come on; running away from military service has become a proud Republican tradition.

@Walker: maybe a polo team, since race baiting does not have a recognized sports league

Please, people, please. It been like forever that we’ve all known that a mixture of both white and brown frothy substances is known as “Santorum.” How Rush came up with this bit of political overcompensation, and bringing our president into it, is … well … Rush assuming the role of the first person to mention a lie that will become “A lie repeated often enough …” But that’s what he gets paid to do, and, hell, it explains why Grover Norquist still has a paycheck to cash in this economy.

i am used to rush being a bigot who talks to bigots who hate their driving jobs, but have nothing but sanctimony for how hard they work doing them.

i am used to the use of race to transcend dittoheadom, to get attention.

what bothers me, is that we are a country with so much racial provocation and a wealth of racial, and racist humor. knowing you are tapping that treasury for attention, and knowing that by doing so, you are reminding everyone who could go on giving less than a single fuck about your existence, that you are still around, why so lame? rush?

i mean its not funny or clever, nor does it draw on anything but the cheapest, laziest of racial metaphors. i mean for your big attention seeking purpose, i would think you would want some better material.

(no wishing it was funny, does not condone it)

    seriously rush, hire a writer.
