Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Stand up, dammit!

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

All hail the time of the bunny!

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

    Found this on the Twitter last night.

    Really too short and pithy to quote here. Just go give Juan Cole the traffic. :D

    Good morning, good people. Up early, I couldn’t sleep.

    So… could someone smarter than me please tell me what the point of this is?

    Jeff Bezos has financed the construction of the first Clock of the Long Now. Created by Danny Hillis for the Long Now Foundation, the Clock is a mechanical timepiece that is intended to run for 10,000 years, and has been designed so that it can be serviced and maintained over that period even if civilization collapses and knowledge of its origin and purpose are lost. The first Clock will be built inside a mountain in west Texas.

    I think I’ve seen this movie. The version I saw, the post-apocalyptic population worshipped the clock as a deity.

    Seriously, why do we need this? So after civilization collapses we can still tell time? I don’t get it.

    Thanks for the link to her new site! I’ll have no problem reading her now that I’m not giving FDL any page hits.

    Fuck Calamity Jane and her Ass Hamsters of the Apocalypse.

    Oh, and good morning all! :)

    I’m recovering from a case of Perryitis. I feel better now that he threatened to whip Bernanke’s ass if he printed more money. At any rate, I am now officially cured.

    Oh, and hey Perry, Bernanke is from Dillon, SC – don’t fuck with SC you fucking Texas scum. yeeehaww!

    @Southern Beale:

    The answer to your question is contained in the link you pointed to. Read past the head:

    “Why would anyone build a Clock inside a mountain with the hope that it will ring for 10,000 years? Part of the answer: just so people will ask this question, and having asked it, prompt themselves to conjure with notions of generations and millennia. If you have a Clock ticking for 10,000 years what kinds of generational-scale questions and projects will it suggest? If a Clock can keep going for ten millennia, shouldn’t we make sure our civilization does as well? If the Clock keeps going after we are personally long dead, why not attempt other projects that require future generations to finish? “

    So Mark Halperin, this morning, says Obama has a credibility issue with teabag party – the teabaggers, apparently, have no credibility issues at all.

    Also, Willie Geist is a dumbass – shagging (the dance!) did not go out in the 40’s, people in the SE coastal areas still shag to this day, and it is very big deal to them. I’ll give Bachmann that much, altho I don’t believe they shag up in yankee-land MN.

    Not a good morning here. The best man I’ve ever known (other than my dad) got a diagnosis of prostate cancer yesterday. I’m beside myself. Am thinking I will ask him to marry me so he can get on my employer HI plan so he can get good treatment and not the eat shit and die already treatment his individual self-employed plan offers. Fuck.

    @geg6:

    Ah geg6. I’m so sorry. Your John always sounds like such a good man. I wish him the easiest possible course.

    My sister and her husband actually got married in the hospital, for the exact same insurance reasons, hours before her John had bypass surgery. They had been together for years, seeing no need to tie the knot officially, but her plan was a lot better than his. Making it official doesn’t seem to have done any damage to the relationship :-)

    Thinking about you and your guy. Hugs.

    @Ben Cisco:

    No shit…lol! It would have to be a death metal band, of course. Imagine Calamity Jane rocking out in a cookie monster voice with the Ass Hamsters of the Apocalypse banging away on their instruments garbage cans while howling at the moon, providing the backing vocals.

    Best thoughts and wishes to both of you, geg6. I’ll hope for the best for the both of you. I have lost several friends and relatives to it and two of them were very young. Our daughter’s best friend just informed her yesterday that her 6 month old baby has a brain tumor and they are in Seattle for evaluation and treatment (if possible).

    Cancer sucks.

    My prayers are with you and your John. I have been grappling with some piddly little skin cancer, and I can imagine how much greater your fears and concerns are.

    As far as cancers go, prostate is usually one of the least aggressive. Is john young or old?

    At any rate; hopes for a complete recovery.
