Just had a delicious dinner with my good friend Walt, and am not sure what, if anything, I am going to do tonight. I made a red sauce with some onions, garlic, and tomatoes from the garden, then I pulled some of my hot peppers and stuffed them with a mixture of freshly made italian sausage from the general store and a bit of ricotta, bread crumbs, some seasoning, and an egg. Pured the red sauce over the top, topped with mozz, and baked for an hour. It was kind of funny, because I used multiple different peppers, so it was kind of like a lottery- you might get a hot pepper, you might get a milder one!
What are you up to?

Dude, you so need to make your own fresh ricotta. I have a few times in the last few weeks, and I’m telling you it is a revelation.
2 quarts whole milk. 1 cup whipping cream, 3 tbl white vinegar 1 tsp+ salt.
Add milk and cream to heavy saucepan, heat over med-high heat til it gets foamy and 185 degrees.(Do not let boil.) Remove from heat, and stir in vinegar for 30 seconds. Stir in salt for 30 seconds, cover and let sit at room temp for 2 hours. Prepare several layers of cheese clothe over a colander with it overhanging the edge. Pout curds into it and drain off whey. and close ends of cheese clothe and twist and seal with rubber band. Pat it every few minutes, to release more whey. Can be used 30 minutes later, or refrigerate and use with in 4 days or so.
I guarandamntee you will never eat store bought ricotta again.

Keanu Reeves plays Constantine…as a boy(who could see demons & angels) attempts suicide, was dead for 2 min…went to hell. was brought back and now sees demons and angels on earth…becomes a demon hunter & sends demons back to helll..

@The Dangerman: Let alone length, diameter, volume and means of taking into account temporal influences on measurements. Could be a long thread. How to measure how long the thread is is yet another issue.
Arclite
@lamh32: Actually, I like Constantine a lot. I think it’s one of the better movies that Keanu has been in, and the movie is written to take advantage of his low key (some would say non-existent) acting. And it’s fairly stylistic and creative, with a plot that isn’t too convoluted. And I like the twist at the end.

Oh John Cole,
also Candied Cherry Tomatoes. 2 c cherry toms, cut in half. Put on cookie sheet, oven 400. Drizzle olive oil, salt and pepper and 3 TBL balsamic vinegar. Toss well. Put in center rack of oven and cook til shriveled, a bit blackened and the balsamic has thickened. Has that great roasted tomato rich fullness of taste and is a wee bit sweet and a teensie bit tangy. Put that on a toasted crouton with some homemade ricotta and you have a perfect appetizer.
I made homemade ricotta, spinach and onion raviolis the other day and did the cherry tomatoes in a bit of wine and shallots for a sauce.

@Linda Featheringill: @Arclite:
yeah, it’s become one of my fav Keanu movies. And I tend to like him when he plays closer to his more laid-back persona. In fact, I realize now, that his more laid-back characters are the movies I like most. Movies like “Point Break” and “Speed” are not even on my radar. I’ve always thought laid-back action star works way better for him. It’s one of the reasons why I think the Matrix films are better fits for him than the two I mentioned. I’m assuming the tower runs from the same power grid as the local apartments. Bloomberg was telling people to fill their tubs for a backup source of potable water.
Even if your tub is dirty and the water won’t be potable or drinkable, fill it up anyway. You may need that water to flush the toilet if you lose water pressure or the water gets cut off — just pour a bucket of that tubwater into the toilet and it’ll flush it down.

Ah, hot pepper roulette. I noticed you were playing with a guy so you both probably thought it was a matter of honor to eat whatever no matter how hot. For civilians it is quite ok to take a taste and then if ridiculously hot to offer it to someone who wants more hair on their chest.
Also maybe you saved or were given some “heirloom” pepper seeds. For some plants, including peppers, melons, (anybody know some others?) you should usually go with store bought seeds or plants. Curbits (pumpkins, melons, cucumbers) hybridize like mad and half-cantaloupe / half-pumpkin does not taste good. Peppers also hybridize and can sometimes produce much hotter bastard offspring – you can wind up with several “jalapeno” plants with fruit hotness ranging from bell-pepper to lip blistering.

Ron Paul also thinks FEMA shouldn’t help people after a disaster — he says that we should go back to how things were done in 1900. Of course, 1900 was the year of the hurricane that just about killed Galveston Island — it did kill more than 6,000 people.

If it wasn’t the Joplin storm, it was that series of devastating tornadoes in MS, AL, GA, and VA a week or so later. They were like 10 days apart. And a week or two after that there was the 4 or 5 tornadoes in OK. The Osama raid was in there somewhere too.
Sorry to be so vague, I traveled a bunch this past late winter and early-mid spring, almost every week, and everything is kinda blurred together in my memory. For like 13 weeks earlier this year, I was on the road for a total of 9 weeks, but home for a day or two between trips.

@Southern Beale: I skipped the ones I thought*nobody* else would know. Filtering on rain in itunes returns 393 songs, although some of that is stuff like every song from Tom Waits Rain Dogs (which I somehow missed on my list) and of course a hojillion train songs.
Southern Beale
G’night folks. Anyone on the East Coast stay safe .. batten down the hatches!

@Dee Loralei: Democrats need to find a way to make people remember at election time just how petty the Republicans were when disaster aid was needed. This is just unacceptable. I don’t care that I have no personal financial interest in the cities that are about to be mowed over tomorrow but I want my tax dollars to work toward fixing the damage, just as everyone else would want to help out my community in a similar situation. If it requires borrowing, so be it.
Southern Beale
@MikeJ:
I checked my own iTunes library and got both rain songs and train songs, which worked for my train thing with Mr. Beale.
Good meeting you the other night …
G’night all!

Oh, that Digby Downer is at it again, racistically hoping for President Obama’s failure in his present course. Can you actually believe that she says, “the President is never going to appeal to GOP leaning Independents – it’s the Democratic leaners who are in danger of defecting. And they’re just as fed up with this appeasement as the rest of us”?
It’s as if she doesn’t read balloon-juice.com at all.

@RandyH: I agree and if they do not, it’s electoral malpractice! Since the press won’t do its job to keep people informed, without that goddamned both sides do it shit, then the Dems MUST!
Also, they need to keep pounding on The Republican Ryan Budget that guts SS, Medicare and Medicaid, raises taxes on the middle class and working poor and cuts them for the very wealthy!

@MikeJ: Props for some CULT!

@FlipYrWhig: I won’t swear for all cats, but I’ve been told by a vet (and seen it act out in real life during Andrew) that the barometric pressure drop right before hurricanes hit will send cats to hide to protect themselves.
My folks lived in Homestead during Andrew, and when they went to evacuate, they could not get the cat Clydece (short for Clytemnestra Damn Cat and yes she was mine before I left for college) to come no matter what they tried and gave her up for gone after the house was destroyed.
About a week later while they were at the “house” cleaning up, she showed up none the worse for wear except filthy.

@Paddy: That’s a great story!

@Paddy:
Happens all of the time. House burns down. Cat hides inside chimney. Homeowners come back to inspect damage. Cat comes out crying for love, covered in filth. So many scenarios. Cat always hides and gets filthy because they’re scared. Owners happy to see their beloved cat once it’s over.
Yes, good story.

@Origuy:
I love that movie, because it feels like a whole bunch of great actors just letting themselves loose all over the beauty-ful countryside. Which, IMO, is pretty much what Shakespeare was aiming at when he wrote the first draft. In that context, Keanu’s perfect — everyone’s being a gang of kids, and Reeves is the whiny little brother who has to be included, even if his skills are not adjudged adequate, because otherwise he’ll spoil everything by tattling to the grownups. Much like Ye Prince in Ye Playe!

(It was an oldie even in my day, you damned kids!)
