Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The willow is too close to the house.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

No one could have predicted…

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

I was promised a recession.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

The revolution will be supervised.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Obama has not let me down, but you’re a terrible person because I asked you nicely several times if you ever grow turnips, rutabagas, parsnips, etc. in your garden, and you’re still all secretive and shit about it. And there aren’t that many of us who love turnips, so I thought it would be a little bonding thing.

@shortstop: My dad would often ask my mom why she never served turnips. She would put him off with one reply or another-all you have to do is ask-until one day he was all sarcastic and shit, saying that he knew her folks raised plenty of turnips on the farm. She shut him up pretty quick when she said, “yes, and we fed them to the hogs”.

Reagan Snubbed Again—Networks Refuse Air Time
June 24, 1986 | From Times Wire Services
    __
President Reagan, denied a speech podium in the House, received a second snub today when the three major television networks denied him live air time to argue his case for sending $100 million in aid to guerrillas seeking to overthrow the leftist Sandinista government of Nicaragua.

I think of this whenever I drive by the monument in town to the servicemen and women we lost during Reagan’s invasion of Nicaragua, the casualties of a war that the Great Communicator bulled through an unresponsive congress through sheer charisma, appeals to the American people, and general armbullyfiresidechatpulpitwtisting.

@catclub: “Consider” is one of those words like “unique” or “interesting” which can be used in that backhanded compliment way. They’ll consider some of them-most of them, probably-just long enough to laugh and move on. And I don’t blame them, frankly. In a country of 300 million, you can get 5000 people to sign on to some really stupid shit.

Also spent some time at Making Light, catching up with their Irene thread from the weekend. (http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/013191.html#013191) There’s a comment (#295) about a library in Vermont which was flooded out and lost all their childrens books. See the comment for a link to an author who has become involved with helping them get books and cash donations. The comment thread linked to the author also talks about other libraries in VT and upper NYS which need help.

    A yes… I sometimes wish I could too.

Sources told reporters that when Obama first took office, the thought of pressing the button and launching thousands of ICBMs only crossed his mind two or three times a day. Two-and-a-half years into his term, however, the button consumes him at all times, whether he is watching basketball, playing with his children, or lying in his bed at night. During a deficit-reduction meeting last Monday with House Speaker John Boehner, the president’s index finger was reportedly resting on the button the entire time without his even realizing it.

Heard a rumor you’ve been abusing your dogs with soap and water, so I’m pretty sure that proves you’re an awful person. Also, too, Obama failed to satisfy the current lust to spend a week pissing off Republicans over inconsequential BS and even worse, failed to instruct his PressSec to take the media’s obsession with Schedulegate seriously. So obviously the republic is doomed and we’re all gonna die.

Sign of the times? Or isolated incident?

Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, a conservative, is responding to criticism from the court’s liberals, regarding his allegation to investigators that liberal Justice Ann Walsh Bradley hit him during a court meeting on September 18, 2008 — a date when the court did not meet. Gableman’s answer is that he is correcting a lapse of memory: It did happen on September 18 –Â but in 2009.

So a republican Supreme Court Justice in WI, is claiming a liberal woman “hit” him, but screwed up the date when it happened, and the liberal justice woman, happens to be the woman that accused Justice Posser of choking her.

Normally, I would just shake my head that this is some kind of unique anomaly, and maybe it is. But the hyperpartisan nature of it, in a state having hyperpartisan “troubles” has me wondering if these kinds of things are happening in other, especially purple states, in institutions created for the very purpose of sorting out political and legal discord.

The sort of thing like caning in the pre civil war years, and other displays of violence, or otherwise breakdown of comity along pol party lines.

I’m still reeling over Obama selling out the core liberal position of Wednesday and instead adopting the right-wing frame of Friday. Friday has never worked for the common man, never done anything to advance equality or the needs of the underclasses. Wednesday has always been about eliminating the great power disparities of society, corporate power over citizens, the oppressive power wielded by the majority to retain their narrow interests. If we give in to the middle ground of Thursday, we can never become a truly progressive society.

Now Kucinich! Oh, he’s a real Tuesday man if I ever saw one! Primary Obama from the left, I say! Force him to tack back to Wednesday or else his base will surely leave him for the lure of Tuesday. Tuesday may not win with voters in the general election, but it’d be worth losing the Presidency in order to preserve the fundamental principles endowed by Wednesday, rather than ceding yet another day to the tea party and their radical ideals. Shit, I remember when Reagan was a solid Wednesday man, sometimes even expressing admiration for Tuesday. How far we’ve fallen as a country.

Edit: Wikipedia says it wasn’t open when I was in the area, so I guess I didn’t go there.

  165. 165.
