Song of the week

Rusty Zinn, “The Chill” (2000)
Here’s the reason I use shuffle. I’ve got a handful of those great Alligator collections but somehow never quite get around to giving them a proper listen. (What’s the appropriate occasion? Maybe Labor Day weekend?) But when the right song pops up at the right moment and bops you on the head with itself, as this one did to me this week, it’s all kinds of the right kismet you want to hope for. I don’t know much more about Rusty Zinn other than that he’s from somewhere around the Sacramento environs of northern California. But I do know that, once started, he’s a slick, fine guitar player and that he’s got a great band too.

Another nice one from Alligator: Charlie Musselwhite, “Leaving Your Town”
More stuff at Can’t Explain.

    When I was in HS I did a blues show on the local community radio station. Bruce, the founder of Alligator, happened to be in town, came by the station and wade a note of every record in the blues section of our library and sent us all of his stuff we were missing. Really, really nice guy.

    I am very disheartened that I managed to miss Dick Dale’s show at UC Fullerton. I thought it was this weekend and it turned out to be yesterday. Aw shit. He played with the University orchestra and the highlighted song was “Misirlou.” Those who have dropped into a double-overhead wave and then made a knee-bending bottom turn away from the curl understand exactly how well Dale captured the essence of that rapturous experience.

    Okay, that was a low blow. I think that what annoys me about Stuck is the way he denigrates any criticism of the Prez and attributes it to racism or ignorance. It also annoys me that Stuck belittles years of Democratic GOTV work on my part because I’m critical of some of Obama’s decisions and very skeptical about his chances for re-election.

    The Obama administration has significantly failed to reduce our economic decline and the high unemployment that is a piece of it. That’s a simple fact and, although there are many reason for it, Obama would have been among the first to step up and take the credit had the modest step that he took with the stimulus bill turned things around. As it is he has to take the heat The political reality that Americans often vote their pocketbooks seems to drive Stuck, et al into a frenzy of name calling.

    Me? I’ll be out knocking on doors and phone banking on behalf of Obama in ’12. If I get one more person to vote Democratic then I’ll have accomplished more for our party than all of Stuck’s name calling.

    I like shuffle too.

    I like Captain Beefheart, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit through all of Trout Mask Replica. That some wearisome sledding. When he pops up and does his thing on shuffle though, he is a delight

    I also like to surprise myself by downloading something and forgetting all about it until it pops up on shuffle. This week it was “Hawaiian War Chant” By Spike Jones. Probably racist and certainly disrespectful to Hawaiian culture, this crazy song also kind of rocks. I often think of how difficult some of these old novelty songs were (Also Looney Tunes scores. They must’ve been a bitch to play)

    And then when you consider that there was no tracking, that you had to nail it in one take, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

    His version of “Hava Negila” is a foot stomping masterpiece. I went to a Dick Dale and the Deltones concert back in the heyday of the surfing craze. You know; back in the early Sixties when young folks in Kansas had longboards strapped to the roofs of their cars.

    Bonus: Dale is 74 and he now lives on a ranch near Joshua Tree, California. That’s deliciously ironic because only Death Valley surpasses the area around JT for being hot, dry, and unforgiving most of the year.

Beefheart’s later albums like Ice Cream for Crow or Doc at the Radar Station are more listenable as a whole, but TMR is just amazing a song or two at a time. And I’m still trying to figure out how Spike Jones did all he did without the option of tracking.

    I think that what annoys me about Stuck is the way he denigrates any criticism of the Prez and attributes it to racism or ignorance.

    Sometimes, with some people. As a general thing, you are as usual full of shit.

    As it is he has to take the heat The political reality that Americans often vote their pocketbooks seems to drive Stuck, et al into a frenzy of name calling.

    More anal retentive bullshit. I and many others are saying that the economy will not be the only driver of votes in this election. There are all sorts of poll evidence to support this notion, this time around. And I never said economic conditions were not a big part or it, even the most important, but there are some profound unique characteristics, that complicate things for this election. That could trump the economy.

    People like you don’t want to hear those, because it upsets you Obama fail narrative.

    That’s a simple fact and, although there are many reason for it, Obama would have been among the first to step up and take the credit had the modest step that he took with the stimulus bill turned things around.

    More false firebagging talking points. There has been a number of extra spending measures Obama has tacked onto various bills as econ stimulus. And characterizing the largest (by far) domestic discretionary spending bill in the history of this country, as “modest” is just more cherry picking history to support firebagger memes.

    The reason I don’t like you, is because most of the idiots around here are idiots and don’t have the capacity to think in more than one dimension. You are smart enough to know better, but you do it anyways.

    I am working on a thorough blog post on my blog on the overall history of the Stimulus and other spending bills Obama has gotten through for stimulus. But I have to study me grammar some moar.

    So you’re now castigating me in advance for what I might comment? Pompous? Yeah right. I attempt to write clear prose. It’s a bad habit I picked up long ago. If that’s a point of criticism for you then you just might be the cracker that you accuse me of being.
    My comments regarding Obama’s performance are based on my opinion of his handling of the office to which we elected him. Nothing more, nothing less. If you feel like clapping harder for an administration that has failed to effectively address the primary woes afflicting our nation then clap on.

    @Skepticat: November? That’s a long time for a recovery. I can live with the pain now, as long as I am able to wear high heels for my wedding in November. I have to be really careful and stay away from any activity that might put pressure on it for a while.

    Move along, folks. DougJ’s latest masterpiece of troll-bait just blew this sad little thread to smithereens.

    @Dennis SGMM:

    On politics, I think you are near completely full of shit. But that is okay, and is my opinion. That will continue to unfold and be expressed as time goes on here in the land of hot air. Mr Clear Prose.

    meantime, I got some archives to study.

    @eemom:

    It wasn’t really Dougj with the troll bait, this time. It was me that chummed the thread, from reading most all the other threads that were brain dead from viral firebaggering. Sorta worked. Got myself lectured by a political legend in his own mind.

    @General Stuck:Mutatis

    Just got in and scanned the threads today. Looks like about all of them have been thoroughly trashed by Obama hater trolls.

    General Stuck: Self indicted and self convicted asshole, which calls for a well deserved and loud “Fuck You to Omnes, Big Baby DougJ” for their support as mindless tools.

    @SteveinSC:

    Well yea, I admitted I tossed out the troll bait. But it was the trolls that took it and ran with it. That is how trolling works, that is a time honored internet tradition around here. Trolls being trolls, are in control of their own behavior and don’t have to take the bait. now don’t you have a Friday night Klan meeting to git to?
