Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

He really is that stupid.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

In my day, never was longer.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

“They all knew.”

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

My team is only playing tomorrow. In the meantime, surprise off-form team of the Premier League season so far, Arsenal, lost scored five goals at Blackburn rovers while the home team scored only two. However, two of Arsenal’s five were own goals, so they lost 4-3.

No, they’re not sucking at all. Verlander is a serious Cy Young contender and Doug Fister has come on strong in Doyle Alexander-ish fashion (which, I hope will continue into the playoffs unlike Alexander in ’87) so they have a legitmate #2 starter now. And the bats have really come alive in the last month or so. Keep an eye on these guys.

    @JPL:

ACC presidents voted unanimously to raise the buyout to $20 million. I don’t see FSU or Miami going to the SEC, South Carolina would block any move by Clemson, and the Virginia legislature would block any move by VaTech. That leaves GaTech, which is a bad fit in the SEC academically and has no ability to spend to upgrade its facilities to SEC standards.

The big losers in this game of musical chairs look to be UConn (yay!), Cincinnati, South Florida, Rutgers, Mizzou, K-State, Iowa State, and Baylor. They aren’t going to find a seat in a BCS conference when the music stops It’s also scary for Texas Tech, OK State, Louisville, West Virginia, and Kansas.

Texas and ND are the key players. Oklahoma, Syracuse, and Pitt also have leverage. Penn State is an interesting situation; they make more sense in the ACC than in the Big Ten, especially if their closest geographic rivals move from the Big East to the ACC. If they leave the Big Ten, it opens up a place for ND. Whether they would make a move is anybody’s guess.

    @burnspbesq:

Most people commenting don’t realize that the Big East requires 27-months notice. That means no one leaves the Big East until 2014.

A lot can happen in 3 seasons, and from everything I’ve heard, from rumors to supposed “inside information”, Rutgers remains on the Big 10 radar, while Pitt and Syracuse, who preferred the Big 10, were not being considered, so they reached out to the ACC.

Alot of shoes still left to drop. I find it hard to believe that in the rush to expand these conferences, Rutgers, in central NJ, which in addition to being part of the NY and Philly TV markets, also encompasses the 4th largest media market in the country, would not wind up in one of the BCS conferences.

MOI — has anyone on the continental US (or indeed on this blog) noticed that the US Rugby team are playing in the World Cup in NZ?

They don’t really have a chance of making it out of their group into the quarters — despite beating Russia they’ve already lost to Ireland and they are still to face the Wallabies but the reports say they played some decent rugby unlike some other bottom-feeding teams in the competition like Japan (who lost by 74 points to the All Blacks) and Namibia.

My home team Scotland are two for two and top their group at the moment but we have a Lifetime Achievement Award for choking and snatching defeat from the jaws of Victory. Still there’s hope, and their last match in the group will be against the Auld Enemy which always puts a Scottish team on its mettle.

UW? No, then I would have missed out on playing pickup ball in Pauley Pavilion. Priceless memories that might come close to the Hayek meeting (on further review …. pondering … well, playing in Pauley against some really good players was great).

He has a great picture of him and the Wizard at a camp when he played for Hawthorne High. You ever play at that great outdoor court at Laguna?

Never played Laguna; mostly, I try to play indoors. Easier on the knees (first knee surgery and I’m “retiring”).

Along with Pauley, there used to be a gym in Manhattan Beach frequented by Clippers/Lakers; now, THAT was fun (mostly, us mere mortals didn’t play the pros straight up for fear of hurting them). Playing with the pros still doesn’t rank up there with Pauley, however.

Met John Wooden once; incredible man (and I’m not even talking about his Coaching record here).

@The Dangerman: I bet. I played in a summer league in Champaign and got to be on the court at the same time as Eddie Johnson and Derek Harper. I quit playing when I hit 50. We’re coming out there in 2 weeks and I plan to get in the water at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Excellent choice; Hermosa is also great. Get some bikes and ride the path from Hermosa to Santa Monica. Venice is worth checking out at least once….

Damn, it’s been forever since I’ve been in the water in Manhattan; well, when I’m in the South Bay, I’m on other business. I’ll have to put on that on my list of things to do soon…

If you’ve ever read “Born on the 4th of July” and have a copy, the author (Kovic?) hangs out in Hermosa at a place called “Good Stuff”. Or, at least, used to do so…

Shit, will someone play some D for UCLA?

The Gophers have a 4th quarter lead over Miami. I want to enjoy it, because it might not happen again this season. I think that there’s a very good chance that Minnesota will not only be the first team ever to finish 11th in the Big 10, but we’re also going to be the first team ever to finish 12th.

This reminds me of one of my UCLA stories; don’t know how true it is, but, considering the source, it could very well be so.

Anyway, someone I know was being set up on a blind date with a no name actress; he politely declined, saying he didn’t date Hispanic women.

    The actress? Cameron Diaz.

This is, of course, before the days of the Net, when even a non name actress could be “researched”.

In Playa Del Rey, there is a crossing; I don’t recall if it is bike only.

As I recall (this goes back to the early 90’s, so it could easily be different), the bike path was on streets through parts of the King Harbor area (for a short distance, don’t recall if that is Hermosa or Redondo) and Marina Del Rey (I don’t recall how much). The strand from MB to Hermosa is my favorite for the South Bay.

Now it’s coming back (with the kindly aid of a google map); there is a bike bridge in Playa. Then one rides around the Marina; as I recall, there are a few streets involved there.

Wouldn’t be a bad walk from Manhattan to Venice except for having to walk around the Marina.

Name doesn’t ring a bell, but his work looks famailiar; I suspect I’ve been by his studio or seen it displayed along the way.

There used to be a good restaurant in Manhattan that still may be there; the Kettle, IIRC. I occasionally (and infrequently, thank goodness) worked odd hours and the Kettle was 24 hours and still good food.

    El Tarasco in El Porto

Doesn’t ring a bell (and I googled it for location); when Mexican called, there was a place in Manhattan (maybe Hermosa) where there was a Y intersection. A real shithole for ambience, but incredible burritos.

I lived and worked in El Segundo (worked at the top of the Dolly Parton building; you have probably been by it), didn’t venture too far after work (hated the traffic). There was a cool Japanese place in ES, but, long gone.
