Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Let there be snark.

I was promised a recession.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

T R E 4 5 O N

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Reason #5437 that professional boxing is a joke compared to MMA. Even their “superfights” turn out like shit.

I’d throw down a shout out for my beloved Seahawks but I’ve already resigned myself to a long, miserable season likely followed by several more “rebuilding” years.

Being a sportsfan is hard, miserable work.

I’m expecting the Cowboys to build a three touchdown lead in the first 3 1/2 quarters, only to have Romo serve up as many interceptions as it takes for San Fran to overtake them in the fourth. Followed by a vote of confidence from the coach and the other players.

Look, Mayweather took an intentional headbutt AND an overhand left (that hit his glove) that came AFTER Cortez broke them up. Not to mention that Ortiz had attempted a headbutt earlier in the fight (he was getting his ass kicked for the whole fight and was being systematically broken down). It was Ortiz who hugged/kissed Mayweather, who wanted none of it. After Cortez said “Let’s go”, Ortiz tried to hug him AGAIN (and Floyd had put his hands up at this point), so he was well within his rights to deck him.
Yeah, Mayweather is not a very nice person, but inside the ring, he is a consummate professional. You want to hug and touch gloves after every exchange or foul, go the UFC.

Little Floyd isn’t exactly beloved back home here- his Uncle Jeff is an old friend, and I don’t like the kid myself- but the punk in this case is Ortiz. There was as much wrong with that combo after they tapped gloves as there is when a boxer charges across the ring at the opening bell and starts throwing punches.

It’s a boxing match, for Christ’s sake. What was Ortiz thinking? He just head butts the guy, and then is like “We’re cool, man. We’re cool.” He didn’t think Mayweather might still be a little upset. Keep those gloves up. Always.

We watched Tron Legacy last night at home. Very pretty. Very boring. Loads of exposition that exposed almost nothing. No romance. No interesting ideas that didn’t come with a dude walking ahead of them carrying a flashing INTERESTING IDEA sign, but then failed to pay off. There were the makings of a good movie in there but, alas, we’ll never know what that movie would look like. I wondered how this concept could have gotten the expensive warm-over treatment. Until the credits. Disney: purveyor of mediocre entertainment to the middlebrow masses. They’ll make another one, and I will not care.

    Jesus, people. Really.

Mayweather has to fight Manny. He won’t live it down if he doesn’t. It looks like he’s ducking him. If Manny wins then Floyd can whine and bitch about drug tests and the like. If Floyd wins, he can whine and moan about not getting any respect from that titan of sports journalism Larry Merchant.

    It’s a win/win for litte Floyd.

    The Titans SUCK this year.

Aw, I bet you say that every year.

Interesting cover story in The Atlantic regarding college sports. May not be anything new to the folks that consume sports 24/7, but for the rest of us (even those of us with some understanding from the inside) it’s very interesting. My short takeway: they’ve dumped so much money in college sports that the whole system is now going to unravel in the courts. You just can’t dump that much money from the free market into a system that operates on such fundamentally different principles and not blow it up. So, now there’s a group of folks that are going to intentionally blow it up.

The cheerleaders aren’t worth chasing, as they usually want to be chased, and should you catch them they’d just as soon fuck you over as fuck you. You want to chase the girls soccer team, as they’re more likely to want to be caught, and good things result from that.

UConn should focus on a divisions that wants them – they’ll get farther.

    @Martin:

Dude, at my high school the cheerleaders mostly had 1300-plus SAT scores and ended up in the Ivy League. They were very much worth chasing.

Cowboys are kinda sucking, but it looks like San Fran might let them off the hook.

Blessing in disguise. Romo is hurt and won’t play the 2nd half.

Ah who am I kidding. There’s no disguise.

I’m just wondering because so far I can’t see the reason to.

Corner Stone: Nope, I don’t see any real reason to. I have a jail broke phone that I use for overseas travel, but I don’t see any real reason to do that to the pad.

The sooner everyone learns that D-III is the only place where real amateur college sports are played the better.

This. D-I is just a minor league with an insanely low salary cap.

I just found out by going to nytimes.com to gloat over the great Jets victory. This did not take long at all. I am not pleased to have allegiance to traitors like Boston College.

Also too, Weiland and Lackey starting tomorrow. I anticipate a long, hard day.

That’s terrible coaching, taking a field goal over a chance to score a touch and take more time off the clock. But despite San Fran’s best efforts to give this away, I think the ‘Boys might just suck too much to take it.

Romo … live by the sword, die by the sword. This week, the gambles paid off. And man, I know Holley isn’t really an NFL level receiver, but they still need to cover him. Great day for him.

Wow. College football is way different in Canada

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIS_football

Scroll down the page and take a look at the stadium sizes. (U of C, U of R, and McGill’s stadiums are shared with the local CFL teams). I was near U of T’s Varsity stadium yesterday, and the stands were only half full for the football game.

    @4jkb4ia:

The only downside I see for either Cuse or Pitt is that John Desko’s life becomes much more difficult. He goes from a conference with an AQ and only three other decent teams to a league with no AQ and typically four of the top six teams in the country. I may have to fly in for the first Duke-Cuse games at the Carrier Dome in men’s basketball and men’s lax.

The Backyard Brawl will continue. It’ll be a non-conference game in September.

Pitt’s basketball players will adjust to ACC officiating right quick, or they will finish games with four walk-ons on the floor.

We can see that the NFC West is absolutely as wide open as every other year. I was so depressed about Lackey that I forgot I was supposed to be excited about the Rams on MNF. But my husband has a meeting tomorrow where he will find out if there is work for him next year. I will just forget this is something I didn’t want to tell John because he is probably not reading this thread anymore.

@burnspbesq: No, there really is no downside in the ACC, especially for football. It is just as sad to see the Big East go as to see the Big Eight go (that’s the way it is looking). Legend and tradition are one of the few nice things about college sports.
