Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I really should read my own blog.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Open Thread: Rogue FYWP Alert

by Anne Laurie|  September 18, 20118:39 pm| 79 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Site Maintenance

FacebookTweetEmail

I just looked at the top layer of the spam filter, and half a dozen regular commentors had been “sin binned” for perfectly unobjectionable comments about gardening, pet nutrition, Star Trek nostalgia, and which team deserved to win.

Apparently FYWP is in one of its random mucker phases. I’ll keep checking for How-the-Hell-could-that-get-called-Spam, but if you’re worried about your comments disappearing, my email address is AnneLaurie at verizon dot net (or click on my name near the top of the right-hand column).

P.S. Please don’t email Cole, I don’t think he can fix FYWP’s tantrum either.

Don’t know, I’m rather enjoying the concept of a sentient FYWP emerging from underneath our very blather. We could match up incarnations of FPers against Spock and the Doctors. Work in a little Bladerunner. Tunch could crush the combined Dalek/Zygon/?? rubber-suited army.

How many posts back to I have to read to grok markar? I’ve fled to a parallel reality for a few days. Is this the latest cudlip or is there more a laughing credenza flavour?

I’d love to know what FYWP stands for but I’m afraid no one can answer me without getting relegated to the sin bin.

I’ve had so many comments sent to the sin bin because I’ve unknowingly used an embargoed word I can’t even count ’em. I still don’t understand why “S0c1al1sm” is embargoed … is BJ still getting Teanut spam about Obama?

Thought I would share this story. I was working the ACLU booth at a festival in Memphis Saturday, along with a friend of mine. A guy in jorts and a large white t-shirt with random holes cut in it walked by and said (in good humor) “I just wanted to see what liberals looked like. You seem pretty normal to me”. I responded with “Wait till the sun comes down, we sprout horns and wings”. We all laughed. Just then a really skinny college-age dude dressed in thigh high leather boots, a miniskirt and a tie-dye strapless top walks by with a RON PAUL 2012 sign. It made my day.

@scav: marklar is from South Park. It’s about an alien society that only has one word in their vocabulary…marklar.
It’s pronounced with different inflection points but invariably…it’s marklar.

I guess it’s the same FYWP fault that caused you to selectively delete highly critical comments by me and Allan on your meltdown post. That was a FYAL fault, actually. You can’t fool people who actually work with WP for a living.

Don’t worry, Anne Laurie. Nothing you do about this will change people’s opinion of you. Some people see random garden and pet posts, and uneditorialised cut and paste from other people’s sites, and other people see a desperate woman trying to regain the goodwill and reputation she pissed away in 24 hours of raw spite.

You could try whitelisting email addresses, but that might allow people to comment on your posts without censorship. Can’t have that, can we, Anne Laurie?

One last dig on ABL in an attempt to get her to reconsider her ill-advised judgement of Star Trek. I was led to this Whoopie Goldberg quote from another, unrelated, blog post on another blog

She said, ‘Well when I was nine years old Star Trek came on,’ and she said, ‘I looked at it and I went screaming through the house, “Come here, mum, everybody, come quick, come quick, there’s a black lady on television and she ain’t no maid!”‘ And she said, ‘I knew right then and there I could be anything I wanted to be, and I want to be on Star Trek.’

There isn’t, as far as I know, a blog-specific version of the forbidden-words filter. WordPress rejects ‘socialist’, also ‘specialist’, because it’s so dumb-stubborn it can’t tell the difference between a political philosophy and a brand-name virility enhancer.

Believe it or not, things have actually improved since I first read this blog, circa 2007/8. Check out the Lexicon entry for ‘WordPress Error’ for the flavor of those unlamented days…

If you really want a nightmare, google “jeggings”… jeans leggings. Which make even young women with shapely legs look malformed, not that young-women-with-shapely-legs make up more than a tiny fraction of the jeggings-wearing population.

So word is the GOP Candidates are gonna endorse Privatizing Social Security…again.

Oh sweet FSM, let it be so. Let them fry. Let them fry.

To those who are interested, Netflix is doing another marketing faceplant tonight. They are renaming the split-off DVD-by-mail service to kwikster.com and (here’s the faceplant) putting it onto a separate website, which will NOT share any data with the streaming website. Thus if you rate movies on one, you have to duplicate the same ratings on the other in order to get benefit from it. Also, you won’t get a notice if one of the movies in your DVD queue appears on streaming. It’s Bachmann-level insane.

Over on the Netflix blog there’s already a horde of complaints. Most of which are pretty justified, IMHO.

    @Roger Moore:

“If you don’t like the FPers posts, don’t click on them and go in to post.”

I don’t. I’m only commenting now because of the outrageous irony of Ms Anne “Deleting Comments She Doesn’t Like And Hoping No One Notices” Laurie trying to cover her ass over the way she deliberately set up WP to send comments to the spam filter (and yes, she can do that with the click of a button, and certainly has been doing it) and trying to stop people complaining to Cole, even though he can actually do something about the problem.

As one of the people she slandered heartily and censored with equal glee in *very* recent history, I feel entitled to bitch. I don’t turn up in all her posts and whine about her formatting and lack of post cuts or her possession of a uterus, like a great many people do to ABL. I’m making a specific point on a specific issue that she specifically raises.

So fuck you, you sanctimonious dickhead. And fuck Anne Laurie’s hypocrisy too.

@No one of importance: Just out of curiosity, is the view from that cross your nailed yourself to nice?

So, I guess the “don’t email Cole” is, well, dead wrong?

    Heh that.
