This graph shows the difference between Democratic and Republican enthusiasm. There are a number of ways to read this graph. Either we’re back in Nader for President territory going into the 2012 election, or Democrats are more disappointed with Obama than Republicans were with Bush right after Katrina.

I’m sure after President Romney and his Republican Congress shutter Planned Parenthood, appoint enough Supremes to overturn Roe v Wade, privatize the Department of Education, turn Medicare into Vouchercare, and outsource the Treasury Department to Goldman-Sachs, Democratic enthusiasm will return.

You know that I know that you I know that I have a serious David Brooks problem. So I’m going to try to a new thing: I read all of his columns and summarize each one in 80 words or less. I shut up about him the rest of the tie.

I will warn you that in some cases I have actually read the columns — which will make my summarizes inaccurate, because I’m likely to get stuck on some off-hand comments about sun chaps and primal scents but mostly I’ve just gone through the first few paragraphs and skimmed to the end.

Bobo today: empathy is worthless so we need strict conservative rules. What’s the proof? Some philosopher Bobo knows says so and sometimes the Nazis cried while they were mass murdering Jews (yes, he went there). Also too, the Kenny G of cognitive/science glibertarianism has a book about this.

Republicans are trying to climb inside your uterus again.


During the last budget showdown, the Republicans showed America its battle-plan in the War on Women: the GOP is trying like hell to defund Planned Parenthood.  At the time, I wrote the following:

I have (or at least I think I have) avoided coming right out and stating that Republicans hate women. It seemed to be such a gross and unfair generalization.

But with each passing day, as they attempt to redefine “rape” and “rape victim”; as they attempt to pass legislation that permits Dr. Conscientious Objector to refuse to perform emergency abortion services and to also not require hospitals to transfer women to a facility that will provide such services (thus, quite literally, leaving women to die); as they attempt to redefine justifiable homicide such that the murder of any person threatening the life of a fetus becomes justified (does this include the murder of the mother herself? Can a scorned boyfriend or husband decide to murder his girlfriend or wife because he suspects that she intends to make a choice about her body and whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term?), it becomes more and more difficult for me to avoid stating the obvious:

REPUBLICANS.HATE.WOMEN.

You had asked for some pix of our gardening efforts. Here’s a couple of the garden along the rail of the upper deck; or, as a friend refers to it, “nice hedge.” It does function as a sight barrier affording us some privacy on the deck.

A mix of flowers, ornamentals, vegetable and herbs taken in mid July. They’re fading a bit now in Western NY but still producing.

The tomatoes are 3 heirlooms and 3 hybrids. Herbs include rampant basil, watercress,thyme, oregano lemon verbena and multifarious mints. Getting to be time to pick and preserve them.

Here north of Boston, we are paying for our glorious summer with a bumper crop of ragweed and other allergy-inciting pollens. The itchy eyeballs are pretty bad, and the swollen sinuses are no fun, but it’s the perpetual brain-fog that’s wearing on my nerves.

This puts me in mind of the Chappelle show classic “Kneehigh Park”:

When he left Fox News last April, Beck explained it was in part because he wanted “to target the youth.” And, starting on Monday, he will take direct aim with a children’s show on his new GBTV Internet network with the tea party-friendly name “Liberty Treehouse.”

Beck won’t be the host of the hourlong show, grounded in American history and the day’s news, but it will lead into his own daily 5 p.m. show on the subscription-based network. And politics, long considered a taboo in children’s programming, will be a frequent topic, informed — like everything else on GBTV — by Beck’s populist conservative sensibility.

I hate to be all-apocalypse all the time, but it’s hard to see a bright future for a society that gives David Brooks a high-profile op-ed gig and gives Glenn Beck a children’s show.

Maybe it’s because I saw “My Fair Lady” last weekend and have been listening to a lot of show tunes all week, but I got not one but two fundraising emails from Marcus Bachmann today. It looks like the Bachmann campaign may be going bankrupt.

This proves that the grown-ups are still in charge of the Republican party. Good news for Mitt Romney!
