Shudder to Think, “Hot One” (1998)
I have to give it up to Shudder to Think for being such great mimics. I haven’t found much satisfaction in the albums traveling under their own name, but I think their soundtrack work is routinely great. Maybe that’s because it’s at the service of a couple of my favorite movies (I know, YMMV) but it’s also because their sleight of hand is so clever and ranges so wide. Here they offer up a lost song from the David Bowie Aladdin Sane epoch—all the sweeter because Bowie had refused to license any of his music for Velvet Goldmine. Consider it a workaround. For High Art, they cobbled together a version of downtown New York fake jazz for “Artforum” cocktail parties that’s equally pinpoint and worked perfectly.

One of my favorite movies too. Thanks for the clip!

Patricia Clarkson stole that flick big time.

Aha Radha Mitchell as Carolyn Cassady in “Big Sur”!

@Raven (formerly stuckinred): it’s funny how many good performances that she’s given and yet she’s not really a big star…. I thought that she was one of the best performances in The Green Mile, plus her work in Easy A, Welcome to Collingwood and The Station Agent where she can do serious, quirky, well damn near anything believably.

@piratedan: And I get the sense it doesn’t bother her. “Blind Date” was a bummer but she was awesome.

@Raven (formerly stuckinred): If you like Patricia Clarkson, you should watch the Station Agent.
edit..to late.. already mentioned. She is a terrific actress.

um ok, I was never really sold on the new Superman. I actually thought Brandon Rouse was pretty hot. I STILL love Christopher Reeves. I was never that big a fan of the “Smallville” version of the Superman universe, but I’ll admit that I kinda loved Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher in “Lois and Clark”.
For me, there will never be any Superman flick better than the first two films with Christopher Reeves. I luv me some Chris Reeves Superman….
BUT….
DAMMMMNNNN! They are sure building Superman way “sturdier” these days. I don’t know who this Henry Cavill dude is but well, heck…hmmm looks like I may just have to see this movie after, purely for comparison purposes really…no other reason.

Velvet Goldmine is one of the great underappreciated masterpieces of the past 20 years.
It also boasts one of the most incredibly kick-ass soundtracks of all-time:

Their vocalist, Craig Wedren came out with a new album last week. It’s pretty damn good.
But I’ve loved these guys since I was 16. I might be biased.

Someone on this site recommended The Hours..the bbc series. I just watched the first disc (three episodes) and really enjoyed it. Thanks.

Speaking of great soundtracks, I just watched Lost in Translation for the umpteenmillionth time again today. Every song, every note is perfect, and so is the expression on Bill Murray’s face through the final scene with Just Like Honey. Heartachingly perfect. What an unlikely looking leading man he is, but he is, and there will never be such a thing as enough Bill Murray.

I opened up for these guys in probably 90′ or so in a small venue, Vetterwirtshaft, near Rosenheim Germany when I was in a punk band.

20 years later, I still love this one

Speaking of songs, are there any Breaking Bad fans on this thread?

Somehow, I never got around to Velvet Golmine. Which is surprising, because I’m decidedly a longtime fan of Haynes’ work.
True story: I met Haynes once way the hell back when he taking Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story around to arthouse cinemas in the trunk of his car because Richard Carpenter had refused the rights to release it. So I went with some friends to see it at the Huntington Cinema in Long Island. Afterwards, Haynes hung around for a Q&A with the ten or so people who stayed for it.
Unfortunately, that’s all the story I’ve got for that one. I wish I’d committed more of that session to long term memory, but at the time Haynes was just some guy making — admittedly cool — post-modern films with Barbie dolls. Then Poison and Safe came out a few years later, and that’s when it became clear how really good a filmmaker he was going to be.

@JGabriel: Wow, what a great story.

Shudder to Think on Balloon Juice! Nice! I too have been a fan since 1988. Interviewed the original band for a fanzine way back when. Great guys.

Have to say I didn’t expect Shudder to Think on Balloon Juice, either.
I don’t know much about their soundtrack work, but their original work is pretty fantastic, particularly the Funeral At the Movies LP http://www.dischord.com/release/054
Day Ditty is my favorite, but Chocolate & Lies About the Sky are good too. And, possibly the point the OP was making, the cover of Crosstown Traffic is amazing. It’s not Hendrix, but it’s hard to explain how or why.
