Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans in disarray!

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

The words do not have to be perfect.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

He imagines himself as The Big Bad, Who Is Universally Feared… instead of The Big Jagoff, Who Is Universally Mocked.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

I don’t know what is happening. Can you please try commenting with your name but with a 2 at the end to see if it goes through?

I can comment as almost all of you so I cannot figure out what is happening.

Update. Try this. Try commenting as usual. If it doesn’t go through, then try the same thing but with your username having a 2 at the end. If you are smitty, type in smitty2 as your username. If you are bob, type in bob2. This is only if you can’t get through normally.

Now we are getting somewhere. Reply was triggering it. I’m going to clear the whole thing and see if nothing gets in now that I’ve disabled reply.

Update. I *think* I know what caused it now, a series of comments with lots of unembedded in the Santa Rosa thread.

The chief advantage that would result from the establishment of Socialism is, undoubtedly, the fact that Socialism would relieve us from that sordid necessity of living for others which, in the present condition of things, presses so hardly upon almost everybody. In fact, scarcely anyone at all escapes.

Now and then, in the course of the century, a great man of science, like Darwin; a great poet, like Keats; a fine critical spirit, like M. Renan; a supreme artist, like Flaubert, has been able to isolate himself, to keep himself out of reach of the clamorous claims of others, to stand ‘under the shelter of the wall,’ as Plato puts it, and so to realise the perfection of what was in him, to his own incomparable gain, and to the incomparable and lasting gain of the whole world. These, however, are exceptions. The majority of people spoil their lives by an unhealthy and exaggerated altruism – are forced, indeed, so to spoil them. They find themselves surrounded by hideous poverty, by hideous ugliness, by hideous starvation. It is inevitable that they should be strongly moved by all this. The emotions of man are stirred more quickly than man’s intelligence; and, as I pointed out some time ago in an article on the function of criticism, it is much more easy to have sympathy with suffering than it is to have sympathy with thought. Accordingly, with admirable, though misdirected intentions, they very seriously and very sentimentally set themselves to the task of remedying the evils that they see. But their remedies do not cure the disease: they merely prolong it. Indeed, their remedies are part of the disease.

They try to solve the problem of poverty, for instance, by keeping the poor alive; or, in the case of a very advanced school, by amusing the poor.

But this is not a solution: it is an aggravation of the difficulty. The proper aim is to try and reconstruct society on such a basis that poverty will be impossible. And the altruistic virtues have really prevented the carrying out of this aim. Just as the worst slave-owners were those who were kind to their slaves, and so prevented the horror of the system being realised by those who suffered from it, and understood by those who contemplated it, so, in the present state of things in England, the people who do most harm are the people who try to do most good; and at last we have had the spectacle of men who have really studied the problem and know the life – educated men who live in the East End – coming forward and imploring the community to restrain its altruistic impulses of charity, benevolence, and the like. They do so on the ground that such charity degrades and demoralises. They are perfectly right. Charity creates a multitude of sins.

However, the explanation is not really difficult to find. It is simply this. Misery and poverty are so absolutely degrading, and exercise such a paralysing effect over the nature of men, that no class is ever really conscious of its own suffering. They have to be told of it by other people, and they often entirely disbelieve them. What is said by great employers of labour against agitators is unquestionably true. Agitators are a set of interfering, meddling people, who come down to some perfectly contented class of the community, and sow the seeds of discontent amongst them. That is the reason why agitators are so absolutely necessary. Without them, in our incomplete state, there would be no advance towards civilisation. Slavery was put down in America, not in consequence of any action on the part of the slaves, or even any express desire on their part that they should be free. It was put down entirely through the grossly illegal conduct of certain agitators in Boston and elsewhere, who were not slaves themselves, nor owners of slaves, nor had anything to do with the question really. It was, undoubtedly, the Abolitionists who set the torch alight, who began the whole thing. And it is curious to note that from the slaves themselves they received, not merely very little assistance, but hardly any sympathy even; and when at the close of the war the slaves found themselves free, found themselves indeed so absolutely free that they were free to starve, many of them bitterly regretted the new state of things. To the thinker, the most tragic fact in the whole of the French Revolution is not that Marie Antoinette was killed for being a queen, but that the starved peasant of the Vendee voluntarily went out to die for the hideous cause of feudalism.

Also went to Wild Ginger in both Seattle and Bellevue, where I had the most fantastic flight of Rieslings, done in the “elevage” method (I think I have that right).

The inventor of the language seems to have taken pleasure in complicating it in every way he could think of. For instance, if one is casually referring to a house, Haus, or a horse, Pferd, or a dog, Hund, he spells these words as I have indicated; but if he is referring to them in the Dative case, he sticks on a foolish and unnecessary e and spells them Hause, Pferde, Hunde. So, as an added e often signifies the plural, as the s does with us, the new student is likely to go on for a month making twins out of a Dative dog before he discovers his mistake; and on the other hand, many a new student who could ill afford loss, has bought and paid for two dogs and only got one of them, because he ignorantly bought that dog in the Dative singular when he really supposed he was talking plural — which left the law on the seller’s side, of course, by the strict rules of grammar, and therefore a suit for recovery could not lie.

In German, all the Nouns begin with a capital letter. Now that is a good idea; and a good idea, in this language, is necessarily conspicuous from its lonesomeness. I consider this capitalizing of nouns a good idea, because by reason of it you are almost always able to tell a noun the minute you see it. You fall into error occasionally, because you mistake the name of a person for the name of a thing, and waste a good deal of time trying to dig a meaning out of it. German names almost always do mean something, and this helps to deceive the student. I translated a passage one day, which said that “the infuriated tigress broke loose and utterly ate up the unfortunate fir forest” (Tannenwald). When I was girding up my loins to doubt this, I found out that Tannenwald in this instance was a man’s name.

Now observe the Adjective. Here was a case where simplicity would have been an advantage; therefore, for no other reason, the inventor of this language complicated it all he could. When we wish to speak of our “good friend or friends,” in our enlightened tongue, we stick to the one form and have no trouble or hard feeling about it; but with the German tongue it is different. When a German gets his hands on an adjective, he declines it, and keeps on declining it until the common sense is all declined out of it. It is as bad as Latin. He says, for instance:

    SINGULAR
Nominative — Mein guter Freund, my good friend.
Genitive — Meines guten Freundes, of my good friend.
Dative — Meinem guten Freund, to my good friend.
Accusative — Meinen guten Freund, my good friend.

    PLURAL
    N. — Meine guten Freunde, my good friends.
    G. — Meiner guten Freunde, of my good friends.
    D. — Meinen guten Freunden, to my good friends.
    A. — Meine guten Freunde, my good friends.

Now let the candidate for the asylum try to memorize those variations, and see how soon he will be elected. One might better go without friends in Germany than take all this trouble about them. I have shown what a bother it is to decline a good (male) friend; well this is only a third of the work, for there is a variety of new distortions of the adjective to be learned when the object is feminine, and still another when the object is neuter. Now there are more adjectives in this language than there are black cats in Switzerland, and they must all be as elaborately declined as the examples above suggested. Difficult? — troublesome? — these words cannot describe it. I heard a Californian student in Heidelberg say, in one of his calmest moods, that he would rather decline two drinks than one German adjective.

    @FlipYrWhig:

I have given up on counting the Cardinals out. I did it for the last two series. They may surprise you in a good way. Recall that few of the Texas hitters have seen the mighty bullpen by committee.

More to the point, REMEMBER 2006! I did not see enough of the ALCS to know if these Texas pitchers can actually field.

But if Nelson Cruz has sold his soul to the devil then perhaps nothing can be done.

@eemom: how can one not? It’s like being in a bouncy castle of weird and wrong and then there’s a Warren Terra bit that basically makes my entire week worthwhile and we’re barely 30 minutes into it. . .

Since we’re unlikely to get another thread tonight, I’ll ask here.

I’m getting bored with WoW, would anyone suggest another MMO to check out? Mac version preferred, but I do have Windows 7 installed on a Boot Camp partition, so I can do that as well.

Update. I think I know what caused it now, a series of comments with lots of unembedded in the Santa Rosa thread.

Yes! My hasty blame-casting was well directed. I feel good about this.
