Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Bark louder, little dog.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

You cannot shame the shameless.

Please don’t feed the bears.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

This fight is for everything.

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

People are complicated. Love is not.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

Friday.

Air Max

Max goes crazy when I use the Chuckit! to bounce a rubber ball halfway to low Earth orbit. He will normally let it bounce once to position himself, then jump as high as he can to catch it on the apex of the first bounce. This is about the only game he loves enough that he will give up the ball rather than play keep-away or ransom it for a treat.

Chat about whatever.

    I found this academic paper from a couple of months back. It’s pretty dense, but apparently the US today is a more unequal society than Tsarist Russia was on the verge of the Revolution-

    @Villago Delenda Est: House Republicans re-learned, after their foray into debating with Obama in 2009, that their particular method of intellectual inquiry is far too refined for the masses to handle.

    @gbear:

    One word on why DST ends when it does:

    Halloween.

    More light for the kiddies to trick or treat in. Not much light, but some. The end of October is in the starting four month “dark times” period, without DST it would be dark around 6PM, especially with cloudy weather, makes for trick or treaters galvanting around in less than ideal visual conditions for drivers, etc.

    I’ve been mulling over some things today – I’m thinking that for conservatives, respecting the troops and fetishizing military service is only best displayed by recklessly throwing them into life threatening action, expecting them to ignore training and morality by having them act like Bill Calley on a particularly brutal PMS day, and shortchanging them on VA benefits whenever they return from long deployments.

    My personal dream is a montage of American military fuckups and domestic policy disasters, all set to Greenwood’s “Ah’m Praoud to be ‘Murkin”. Can someone fulfill that for me?

    I’m usually a lurker, but I thought I’d post here in hopes of getting some response — my roommates and I took in a litter of stray kittens this summer, and we’ve managed to find homes for all of them except one (we’re keeping one, but we already have cats and definitely can’t keep two.)

    Anyone in NE Ohio here who wants, or knows someone who’d want, an energetic black shorthaired female cat, about 4.5 – 5mo old, petite and prone to leaping immense distances in a single bound in order to land in your lap and demand attention? She’ll need to be spayed, and she’ll probably be best as an exclusively indoor cat. Pic here; please contact me at my blog if you’re interested!

    (It’s an open thread with a pet picture; I figure I can’t be TOO off-topic.)

    @Villago Delenda Est:

    I get emails from ThinkProgress and just read that Cantor’s office complained to the U about making the event open to the public when he only wanted to speak to a “select” audience. The U made a statement that the Wharton speaker was always typically open to the public and Cantor’s event was billed that way. Cantor is also a cowardly, lying shit.

    A friendly heads-up: I’ve no way of knowing how tall you are, but it appears Max has grown proficient in The Throat Level Attack Maneuver (to which all dobermans aspire).

    My Dog, “Narra”/Vizsla, loves to catch on the second bounce. Its usually like 3-5 feet in the air, and she just sails, all legs back in aerodynamic mode.
    Rescue dog, so some-one else gave her the skills. The Foster parents couldn’t understand why she loved tennis balls!?

    I’m tucked up in bed fighting a sore throat so I’m on my touch and don’t have a link but I wanted to say that the local shelter should be able to put the darling little black kitty on Petfinder for you.

    Especially with such a vivid writeup as you’ve given us here. Good luck!

    Amir Khalid, WereBear, thank you! I may try seeing if the local shelter or our vet can help us put something on PetFinder; this’s the first time I’ve taken in cats I can’t keep long term, so I don’t know the tricks yet. :)

    @Kira:

    If you can afford it, you may want to get her spayed yourself — it’ll be easier to get her adopted out and you won’t have to worry that the new owners will forget later. Most cities have low-cost spay and neuter programs available, or your current vet might be willing to cut you a break.

    Speaking of which, your vet’s office probably maintains an adoption book, so you may be able to get her entered in there, too.
