That was very insightful. I’m glad you posted it.

What’s it about? I cannot view videos at work.
Urza
That was the perfect explanation of Occupy Wall Street, and it has a good beat.
The Ancient Randonneur
Paraphrasing Marshall McLuhan: the people involved in OWS are the message.
EDIT: (H/T Barry Dunsmore)

give us enough good jobs and we would be willing to be co-opted.
so, co-opting could be good.

@Belafon (formerly anonevent):
About OWS and how the media are the ringers in the three-card monty game.
scav
Vaguely relevant and OT, but there’s a game of quick shuffle and the hand is quicker than the eye corporate jive going on at the News Corp meeting, Live at the Guard. Minor fireworks promised, as they’ve got Tom Watson there and there are doomed promises of a shareholder revolt (no way to win). I’m not really expecting any Yetis this time: they were bused in and frisked for pies. Still hoping though.
joes527
So, I’m wondering if legal assistance can be set up to take every OWS arrest though the dueest of due process.
If each and every arrest were to result in a full trial, cities might think twice before making mass arrests.

@scav: The con is long past.
Murdoch controls 47% of the VOTING stock, so only needs an ignorant 3% of proxy signers to carry any vote. Any investors should know that the game is rigged, and that, so far, they have made money off of News Corp., but that could change.
piratedan
@scav: well Uncle Rupert has already copped to a plea/payout to the family of the girl who’s phone was hacked. Could be additional fallout from that. It’s a pretty big domino to fall imho.
Also took the time to take the video and linked it to my front page on facebook. Items like that need to be seen and shared because it illustrates, in easy to understand language the undiluted message, so to speak.

There are people working on that very thing in NYC. Don’t know about other places, though.
ETA: I was just informed by the daughter unit that folks in Iowa are also demanding jury trials.

@catclub: I know the voting is doomed, the tiered stock has that covered (and his buddy the Prince of whoever it is with 7% more). I’m going with the general gesture of it actually coming up in public and there being a vote — well that and waiting to hear what Watson is going to say about surveillance and the existence of other shoes. This isn’t all Dowland stuff, there are other issues and people involved.

Don’t get me wrong–I LOVE this guy’s message! But the devil perched on one of my shoulders wants to know “Is this guy the son no one ever knew Vanilla Ice had?”
A Mom Anon
If you’ve never seen this guy’s video about what is and isn’t racist,it’s awesome.
Violet
Wow that was great. I’d seen it linked but hadn’t taken the time to watch it. This guy definitely has it figured out.
Don Moors
Only if Vanilla Ice had Black children.
That’s my man Jay Smooth and I’m delighted to see him get some additional exposure here on Balloon Juice.
I’ve been watching his videos since the 2008 election and he was on the money then as well.
Yutsano
@Don Moors: AL has highlighted a video or two of his in the past. ABL I’m certain wants to have his bebehs. Jay Smooth is definitely a familiar and welcome voice here.
Jay in Oregon
As far as trying to co-opt the movement, it’s already begun. MTV is looking for OWS protesters for the next season of The Real World.

And that clip was excellent.
He reminds me of Elon James White a bit in his delivery.
Exurban Mom
I love that guy. Visit his vlog and watch some of his older pieces, including the one A Mom Anon mentioned re: what is and isn’t racist. It’s awesome. http://www.illdoctrine.com/2009/06/allow_me_to_reintroduce_myself.html

@Don Moors:
Agreed that it’s good to see him get more exposure here. Maybe the frontpagers could make it an irregularly regular feature?
As to the other comment…I’d be really surprised if Vanilla Ice, during his glorious (snark) 15 minutes of fame, didn’t avail himself of some sepia-toned punani, if only to give himself a little more ‘street cred’. He needed all he could get, after all.
Montysano
As he noted, what was originally thought to be the weakness of OWS (No clear message!) is turning out to be its strength. I hope they/we can hold onto that, because in our local OWS group there’s a lot of impatience to form an agenda and address the issues (i.e. politicize the movement).
For me, the perfect message is: By The People, For The People. It’s short, it’s sweet, it has that Founders’ cred about it.
catclub
@Montysano: “By The People, For The People. It’s short, it’s sweet, it has that Founders’ cred about it.”
And was written by a non-founder. Best kind of founder cred.
ericblair
@Montysano:
As far as I can see it, it did coalesce around a message (“We’re the 99%”) and then it took off. It’s definitely not a set of specific demands, but I agree that getting people all over the world to sign on to the message has been an inspiration. Concrete demands can flow from that: basically, why is the 1% getting everything and the 99% nothing? What can we do to stop it?
slag
It would be excellent if Jay Rosen or someone would provide a comprehensive annotated list of ringers for us based on this analogy.
Phylllis
@Linda Featheringill: A tactic that was a tipping point to some extent for the counter sit-ins during the early days of the civil rights movement. There’s a great little documentary about it, ‘Jail, No Bail’ that you can probably stream online from SCETV.
Nutella
@slag:
Here you go: list of ringers.
Lysana
Oh, yeah. Jay Smooth. I love him to tiny little bits. Thank you, Doug.
Lysana
@Don Moors: ISTR Smooth is half-white. But naw, Vanilla Ice could never produce someone that cool.
Karen
I don’t know if this is a ringer but I saw an ad where they say that the OWS is antisemitic…..based on the horrible things the “OWS protestor” says and my bet is that these people have been paid by the group who made the ad, to say horrible things about Jewish people…and the group who made the ad is definitely tied into Wall Street in some way since they use the word “mob.” My guess is that the “OWS protestors” they filmed examples of, are ringers who have been told to say antisemitic things.
The group is The Emergency Committee For Israel Don’t click here if you don’t want to see the ad.
And as a Jewish person the ad made me enraged. Not for the reasons they were aiming for. But because since we know they’re either connected to Wall Street or are people working FOR Wall Street, by using the antisemitism angle, it feeds into the stereotype of all the banks and money being run by Jews. If they thought they’d get liberal Jewish people’s sympathy, they failed, at least with me.
Here is Wikipedia’s information about the Emergency Committee for Israel and look, Bill Kristol is part of it, which tells you everything you need to know.
Another thing that’s starting to happen are the rumors. My father told me that a friend told him that the protestors on Wall Street have been paid $600 each to protest.
This is the fucking bullshit that the 99% have to deal with.
nominus
I am persistently amazed that this was predicted 18 years ago, and so far seems to be playing out in the same social pattern without the sci-fi: http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=7069 – the rise of the transnationals, and the revolution that won’t go away. Though it does kinda worry me, since the first revolution is always violent before the second revolution actually accomplishes the goal.
gloryb
IIRC,Keith Olberman had a piece showing that the anti semetic sign guy is a local crazy who appears with similar signage at every random gathering. Anyone else see that?
Mama Smooth
@Exurban Mom: I’m not surprised discriminating moms see Jay Smooth’s genius… Signed, his proud mom :) (sorry, I couldn’t resist)
