Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Everybody saw this coming.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Trump makes a mockery of the legal system and cowardly judges just sit back and let him.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Consistently wrong since 2002

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

What I love is the tradition being carried on here at BJ.
Kay, SP&T (fictionally a female) and Anne Laurie now dropping over 80%+ of the recent football threads.
What’s the Latin word for “glorious” ?

Guess what, they play college football every Saturday from Labor Day through the first week of December. It shouldn’t be necessary to whine or be sarcastic. Just put the damn thread up. (ps, they start at NOON not three).

@Corner Stone: LOL, If I had to wager, they invented football so all of the best restaurants would be empty when they chose to luncheon, reduces the probability of having to interact with someone making less than 500K a year….

as to the other, I would look to the private institutions like Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt and Rice and naturally most of the Ivy league.

What’s more, FYWP has a post scheduling feature, so they could theoretically schedule the rest of the season (both college and pro) today.

But that wouldn’t be readership capture.

“I always told the boy that keepin’ a tiger in the county might be legal,” said the Sheriff, “but it be best to send it back to Africa.”

    @handy:

I’m actually of the opinion that it’s Guerrero who’s the real problem here.

I’ve heard it’s bigger (though Guerrero’s seat may be pretty hot, too). There are lots of rumors, including:

    1) UCLA people not in the athletic department are pissed that Howland makes so much money…

    …which means…

    2) UCLA will never pay the huge bucks for a Coach (we got Rick on the bargain bin as I recall).

    3) I’ve heard Donahue, who’s only been gone forever, still gets some input on who gets hired (thus, Dorrell and Neu).

Toss in the extra fixings like a long commute to the stadium, it being a basketball school, the academic reputation (shit, I’d never be able to get in any longer; I’ve heard of 4.0’s not making the cut to get in) that doesn’t give a crap about football (see long commute above) and, well, Guerrero has a mess. His contract was posted on one of the boards last night; Dude makes a LOT of money and hasn’t really done a whole lot for his pay.

    @The Dangerman:

Yeah that’s why I threw in “he’s not really the problem either.” In addition to all the things you’ve mentioned I’ve also heard that the Chancellor and the Regents aren’t too keen on the “Big Boy” money contracts you see at the top SEC programs, for example.

As for the Regents, Cal has a decent (and consistently good) football program. Hell, UCLA had one a little over a decade ago. The stadium situation is a problem, but yet there was a time in the late 90s when a ticket to a game at the Rose Bowl was one of the hottest in town.

It’s really a different school now from when I went there so maybe it’s time to turn the page, but I’m an alumnus who always wanted FB to be topflight, but that’s not gonna happen so what do.

I’m of the opinion that UCLA should be topflight in just about everything it does (and it’s got a fine record in that regard, academically and athletically), but FB is a problem that goes back a long ways. I’ve thought a campus stadium (converting Drake, though that seems to be impossible now) or at least a closer Stadium (say, the VA grounds, also basically impossible, as is any Westside stadium as the locals would shit bricks from here to there) might help solve the problem, but that solution isn’t going to happen. But, that’s why Guerrero is paid the big bucks, to come up with answers, but…
