Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

One way or another, he’s a liar.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

In after Baud. Damn.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Republicans in disarray!

White supremacy is terrorism.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

    Anne Laurie:

What’s on the agenda for this weekend?

Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged Pt. 1 is finally available for bittorrenting on pirate download sites!

I can’t decide whether to download it (for the irony!) or wait for the porn parody.

Anne Laurie, later when it gets up, can you post Rachel’s brilliant diatribe about FP Mag using Wolfowitz and Michael O’Hanlon to write about what’s next for Afghanistan? She also tells Condi, W and Cheney to shut up too! It made me giggle.

    ETA: damned typos

If ya’ll missed this segment on Hardball with Rep Guitterrez & Sanchez on Marco Rubio, you missed a good one (one of the few with Tweety lately). You can tell Rep Guitterrez wanted to say so much more! Rep Sanchez was way more delicate but she agreed with Guitterrez.

    Marco Rubio’s changing narrative

Washington Post recently broke the story that Marco Rubio is actually the son of immigrants, not Cuban exiles as he first claimed. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Illinois, and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif., discuss whether Rubio’s version of his history was a ploy for the Hispanic vote.

Republicans may have found their Michael Dukakis, a technocratic Massachusetts governor who takes his bearings from ‘data’ … Has conservatism come so far, surmounting so many obstacles, to settle, at a moment of economic crisis, for THIS?

I’m watching Bill Maher. Michael Ware must be coked up or something. He can barely sit still. Something is way off there.

And Ron Christie is looking like such a dufus. I keep expecting someone else on the panel to pat him on the head and hand him a lollipop.

Switching between the World Series finale and an unplanned Chuck mini-marathon on DVR. I had forgotten I had the last four episodes unwatched on DVR, and I need to get through those before I watch the new one from tonight.

I am realizing that I was sort of losing patience with Chuck, which is why those episodes have sat unwatched since May. The writing seemed to go downhill last season, and the “cute” factor around the Chuck-Sarah relationship was starting to redline.

Every other word out of Ron Christie’s mouth is “America,” which probably works with a Fox News audience but clearly he’s over his head on Bill Maher.

@Southern Beale: Agree about Ware. If I recall correctly, he has had some drinking issues. That said, seven years in Iraq will drive anyone to drink.

Maher said something that I hadn’t heard: Bush has an approval rating on 47%. We really are the stupidest country in history.

    @Hill Dweller:

Bush has an approval rating of 47% right now? Hell yeah I approve of him: he’s not in office, he’s staying off the news, he’s keeping his mouth shut. As long as Bush stays off my radar I approve of him completely. Clear brush and play golf, dude, and leave the rest of us the fuck alone.

@Southern Beale: Cornell West said the same thing.

I still don’t think most people appreciate just how damaging the Bush term was for this country. They managed to elevate corruption and incompetence to new levels, and we are still paying for it. Bush is going to have to do a lot of good with the his remaining time on earth in order for me to ever “approve” of him.

@Southern Beale: agreed SB, I get miffed when I keep hearing about people being upset that the change hasn’t happened fast enough and that they think that once he was elected he had some sort of unstoppable mandate to effect change across the land. There’s still a boatload of “unfuck” that has to be done and naturally the R’s are doing their damnedest to leave as much of that in place as they can to show that Washington is broken, so put us back in charge because, after all, we’re responsible for most of the breakage.

You can almost hear Will spitting the word “data” with venomous contempt, as if it were shit, or pus, or some vulgarity even more revolting such as someone living on less than six figures a year.

    @JGabriel:

    From Twilight of the Idols:

[W]ith dialectics the plebs come to the top. Before Socrates, dialectic manners were repudiated in good society: they were considered bad manners, they were compromising. The young were warned against them. Furthermore, all such presentations of one’s reasons were distrusted. Honest things, like honest men, do not carry their reasons in their hands like that. It is indecent to show all five fingers. What must first be proved is worth little.

I watched a few minutes of Barbara Walters’ “Billionaire Secrets: What They Know That Can Change Your Life” 20/20 special, which seemed to be intent on putting a human, compassionate fate on the poor misunderstood 1%. ABC is going in with Galt.
