Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans in disarray!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Second rate reporter says what?

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

The lights are all blinking red.

Well, my team actually won – and Eddie Guns officiated, so I’m a happy grrl.

@Steeplejack: Steepman! How the hell are you?

Hope springs eternal, any given Sunday, etc. After all, the Rams beat the Saints today, and even Minnesota won. But, yeah, looks bleak for the Stillers. I mean, Brady is en fuego.

It’s a good thing my Buckeyes pulled off the upset yesterday, because my Broncos are not good at all. Tebow has completed two out or ten passes. That’s TWO out of TEN! Perhaps a little more time working on his mechanics and a little less time filming commercials telling people about whose situation he knows nothing how they should live their lives would be a good idea.

One more half like that, and I’ll be singing while I make delicious shrimp fried rice for dinner. Got the mise en place all ready to go and dinner will be ready within 15 minutes of the end of the game. Maybe even TWO bottles of wine if the Stillers pull it out. Got a good show about characterization on tv on PBS and the first episode of Next Iron Chef to look forward to tonight. This might just be a very good day.

Just think, if football could change the game to only have two 2-minute halves, you could get all of the games on one channel, so you’d never miss anything, but the Pats would never lose a game.

    @geg6:

I’ll be making chicken soup tonight. My son’s kindergarten is a freakin’ petri dish! I have this cheaters’ recipe where you buy one of those whole, cooked rotisserie chickens from the grocery store and then set the meat aside and boil the skin and bones in chicken stock to make the broth. Then you dump it through a strainer into a big bowl, put the pot back on the stove and saute the veggies, add the stock and meat back in and let it simmer. Boil egg noodles separately and voila!

This weekend is the weekend that clocks would have changed if they didn’t extend the daylight savings time. And I have 3 clocks that have preset time changes built in so that I don’t have the hassle of changing them twice a year. Except now that the dates have changed for when we set clocks back, I now have to change my clocks 4 times a year instead of never. Ugh.

On the other side of the ball, they really smoked the Patriots’ linebackers, particularly Spikes and Mayo (don’t even know why he’s back), in coverage.

Pats didn’t deserve to win that (what’s with all the play-action? That only works if you can run the ball) but man, was that a ref screwjob at the end with the claim that Gronk didn’t break the plane when he caught it in the end zone and Polamalu’s deliberate swatting of a fumble, which led to this immortal announcing:

Jim Nantz: Oh, what a heads up play by Troy Polamalu!
    Phil Simms: Well, its illegal…

Oh well. The Steelers are definitely the most improved team in the league since the start of the season, and the Pats still can’t beat top teams on the road.

@SamR: I have to agree it was a bad call with the non-TD, but that is on Belichick to challenge there.

The tricky part was that there was no replay for them to see before throwing the red flag. Usually the coaches in the box get to see the network replays and call down to the field and tell them to throw the flag before the next play goes off. But in this case you have a choice to make — wait for a replay and let precious seconds run off the clock, or line up again quickly to save time, which means the network isn’t going to cut away to a replay.

Giants won and Jets had a bye.

Arsenal won. Galaxy won. Not only did the Duke women win, the Carolina women lost (to FSU!).

A great weekend, with one huge, festering exception.

@Ron: Fair point, it is on the coach to challenge ref mistakes. And the Pats had both challenges.
