Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

The words do not have to be perfect.

This fight is for everything.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Petty moves from a petty man.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Republicans in disarray!

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

A photo of Michael Vick flashed across my TV screen and I said (aloud, mind you): “Don’t smile at me, fucker. Win the game.”

What are the chances that he doesn’t totally screw this up and the Eagles win?

I’m skeptical but optimistic, if that is at all possible.

Looks like I may be able to get through this week without hearing “Tebow-mania” ad nauseum on the TV (7 sacks – again – and a blowout loss). Things are looking up!

Irony- listen to my right wing family blather about how you can’t rehabilitate criminals and you need to throw away the key, then asked me “You don’t believe in rehabilitation?” when I question whether Michael Vick deserves to play again after what he did.

“I believe in redemption and rehabilitation, it’s just you don’t unless it’s for people who can win you the football pool at work.”

I will fully admit that I wasn’t happy to see Vick in Philly, however, he did his time, he has never tried to say that he was set up and he is doing all the work with the SPCA that he said he was going to do. Would it really have been better to take away any legitimate way for him to earn a living?

Oh man, another Vick argument fest!

When he goes on 60 Minutes and tearfully recounts electrocuting puppies as they drown in a pool, I will consider him rehabilitated. Most people think he ran a dog fighting ring—which is bad enough, but I could understand a least a little bit culturally—but he ran a dog torture ring more than anything. Or if BADRAP forgives him, I might think about it. But for now, I don’t think he is rehabilitated.

    @Kathy:

Would it really have been better to take away any legitimate way for him to earn a living?

Mopping floors at McDonald’s is a perfectly fine way to earn a living. You are conflating making a living and being a millionaire on television.

As far as the game goes, the best I can wish for is a bus crash.

OT–and Thank Bieber, the way this thread is about to go,
The Politico has two women accusing Herman Cain of Sexual Harassment.

During Herman Cain’s tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO.
The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures.
    Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1011/67194.html#ixzz1cJounM8P

But one source closely familiar with Cain’s tenure in Washington confirmed that the claims related to allegations of sexual harassment – behavior that disturbed members of the board who became aware of it, as well as the source, who otherwise liked Cain.
“I happen to know there were sealed settlements reached in the plural. I think that anybody who thinks this was a one-time, one-person transgression would be mistaken,” this source said.

Do we have a definitive legal/illegal call on Polamalu’s last play? Dude’s from SC, so it’s probably illegal.

If a balls fumbled, it’s illegal for the offense to advance it or hit/kick it out of bounds intentionally (it’s illegal touching). Now, I think Defense can do just about whatever the hell it wants unless it gains possesion, in which case, see the previous.

I think it’s a legal play, though not really head and shoulders above the rest because, in theory, New England could have recovered the onsides kick and scored. In theory, of course.

August 31, 2011 BJ thread by Dennis G

Timing is everything in politics. Obama has far more hits than misses with grand gestures in his presidenting. Such as the big classroom bipartisan get together, to get congress to finish up with passing HCR. He’s delivering the same message day after day at town halls and stops all around the country for a while now. Sort of local mini bully pulpiting picked up by local news for that area.

This grand gesture is timed just right for after the traditional POTUS reelect campaign begins on labor day, and for all the nice touches Dennis G mentions. It is why this president has been on of the most successful ones thus far in his term, against an insane and disloyal opposition. Obama has this, my little progressive childn’

Granted, there aren’t a lot of people seriously considering electoral politics at this early stage, but I suspect more than normal, folks are tuned into our long runnng bad economy, especially about jobs.

But mostly what this is for, is to frame the election debate, and overall political debate concerning the number one issue, that of jobs. It is as much for inside the beltway politics, as anything, to use the megaphone a president has to lay down markers and be on offense, and put the other guys on defense.

I approve of populism, when the timing is right. And using wingnut strategy against the wingnuts, like with the Super Committee democrats and Obama, still pushing the “Grand Bargain” to include cuts in medicare. For pure politics, without any chance of passing with attached tax raises for rich people. That will be all for now, unless someone has questions.

Right in the middle of my forehead.

If Cain had done it, he would’ve said something like “Years ago, when I was young and immature, I did something I’m not proud of. We reached a settlement with the people in question, and I have learned lessons from it and moved on. I will not answer questions on the subject as it is a personnel matter with a former employer.”
Instead he’s acting like he’s pissed off that he has to deal with this, and issuing these clumsy non-denial things.
I don’t know if Rove did this, (it IS his kind of thing) or the person on the board of the Restaurant Association who is giving all the information to Politico is the one who gave the whole thing up, but I would be shocked if Cain wanted this to ever see the light of day.
