Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Battle won, war still ongoing.

We’re not going back!

No one could have predicted…

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Republicans in disarray!

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Republicans would impeach Biden if he bit into a whole Kit Kat rather than breaking the sections apart.

When we show up, we win.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Second rate reporter says what?

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

This post is in: Excellent Links

Here’s this week’s harvest of links:

* Southern Beale is always worth a read. Here’s a recent post about the bundling of subprime auto loans that’s a good example of the kinds of things covered at that blog.

* Jeff Fulmer has a post about what he thinks a Christian candidate would say, and it’s not quite the same as Rick Santorum, unsurprisingly. Jeff also has a book with similar themes at that link.

* Sai from the authoritative gayhomophobe.com is looking for examples of people who are:

– in a position of power
– supporting or promoting anti-gay agenda
– credibly outed (for “ex-gays”, that means outed *after* their supposed conversion)

You can contact him through his site, or send me what you have, I’d love to post on that topic.

Finally, not really a pimp, but commenter pragmatism sent this link to a Scientific American article about a study showing that most climate change deniers are white males. He recommends the comments.

My email is at the top right of the page. Send me what you want pimped and I’ll slip it into my post next Friday.

Well, duh — white males are good at science while the brown and black people and those with all the ladyparts are genetically disadvantaged in this matter.

The anti-fluoridist Teabirchers carry on their battle for FREEDUMB (via the awful, terrible no-good GOS):

Tonight I went to the Public Service Commission (PSC) public input meeting…
    __
…the topic du jour was the new smart grid…
    __
Or more specifically, new smart meters which are to replace the old meters on peoples’ homes. Here I expected the audience to ask questions like “how does it work?” and “will it save me money?” and “can I control it online?” stuff like that.
    __
But instead what I heard was statement after statement after statement about how the new smart grid was a government conspiracy to find and detain people who dare to use incandescent lightbulbs, and that smart meters are going to fry your brains out and give you cancer.
    __
One man in the back asked if these new smart meters can be turned off remotely, shutting off power to the house. The man started talking Big Brother when the PSC guy answered in the affirmative. Oh my GOD! Government Overreach! Government Overreach! The POWER company has the ability to disconnect my POWER! ARRRRGH!
    __
One after another, after another, after another…..”I don’t want the government telling me how to save energy…I know how to save energy.”
    __
“I heard the government can tell if I’m using incandescent lightbulbs and will disconnect my power instantly if they discover I’m using those old bulbs!”
    __
“I read that these things will destroy the electricity not just your own house, but in your neighbors houses too…even if you don’t have one if your neighbor does it will corrupt your electricity!”
    __
“They’ve been a disaster in Europe! Just look at Spain!”
    __
“This is just a way for the Greens to get into our lives and make us get used to a lower standard of living.”

I guess before the ebbil ‘Smart Grid’ the local electric company was unable to monitor your and your neighbors’ and your neighborhoods’ electricity use, and they were unable to interrupt your electrical service.

Once again, the South Park parodies of ‘Tukrjerbs’ and so forth are made outdated and too modest.

[Clearly, in protest, citizens need to change every bulb in their house to 300 watt incandescent floodlights, and turn every electric appliance on to maximum, including dryers, hair dryers, power tools, blenders, and the like, just to show the Smart Grid Kenyonesian One World Mark of the Beast Communists who’s boss.]

“a Scientific American article about a study showing that most climate change deniers are white males.” If they drilled down further, my guess is that they are white males who have been divorced at least once. Divorced white males must be at least 75% Republican if not higher and lean further to the right than the average Republican voter.

We need a post on just the Scientific American article. Lots to talk about there.
The comments do prove the article’s substance, doesn’t it?
The conservative white males that I know also do not believe in climate change, proving the point of the article.

“The conservative white males that I know also do not believe in climate change, proving the point of the article.” That is because in order to be a conservative in good standing, you have to believe global warming is a hoax AND be against abortion AND believe lowering tax rates increases tax revenues AND believe Social Security is going broke very soon AND the financial crisis was caused by Fannie and Freddie making too many loans to comply with affirmative action requirements, etc. Plot these on a Venn diagram and you just see a bunch of circles resting on top of each other.

Since white males are the most conservative demographic, I don’t see why it’s interesting to find that white males are more likely than other groups to subscribe to a particular conservative view. Did that study really add anything to the discussion?

I’d have to look at it more carefully, but that Scientific American study looks like garbage to me.

    1. Everyone alreayd knows that white males, as a group, are more likely to be conservative.
    2. Everyone alreayd knows that conservatives, as a group, are less likely to believe in global warming.

Why would it be at all surprising (or even require a study) that the most conservative conservatives don’t believe in global warming?

I can’t believe some researcher got paid actual money for this!!! I am inspired to seeking grant to perform the following follow up studies:

Are conservative white males less likely to support raising taxes?
Are conservative white males less likely to believe in gay marriage?
Are conservative white males less likely to be pro choice?
Are conservative white males less likely to approve of communism?
Are conservative while males less likely to support Obama?

What do you guys think? Do you think $500,000 is enough to fund these very important and illuminating studies. Quick, someone write me a grant proposal!

What is interesting is that the definition of “conservative” has changed radically in the last 20 years. “Conservative” used to mean small government, strong military and self reliance. The John Birchers used to be defined as “nuts”. Science used to mesh just fine with being conservative. Now the new conservatives are big into government intrusion and ignoring any scientific evidence that contradicts their preconceived beliefs. Like the John Birchers in the 50’s and 60’s.

    @cathyx:

Why are white males more conservative than the rest of the population?

because they think they’re superior to everyone else and feel the need to protect that superiority.

@sublime33: actually, conservative used to mean supporting the existing power structures. the small government thing is more recent.

@cathyx: The status quo generally works better for white males than for other groups. White males are more likely to favor a return to the good ol’ days when they were an even more favored class. White males are less in need of an equalizing boost from the government because history has already given them a boost. And so on…

    @cathyx:

But what does that have to do with being conservative?

Because conservative has come to mean yearning for a time or protecting the society where white men have a supreme advantage over every other group.

White males became conservative after the Civil Rights Act because civil rights and equality became the mantra for liberals- white men don’t like equality, it threatens them.

I was raised a white male conservative by white male conservatives- it’s all about protecting the inherit advantage America’s unequal society gives them.

That’s the longest string of comments about the topic I’ve ever read that didn’t contain the word “fuck”.
